Sony Pictures to celebrate Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary in 2024

Would love to see "The Whistler" movies restored and released on Blu-Ray. A great series of movies.

When are the Vintage Technicolor Movies Going To Be Released ?

Yes, I have seen "Follow Thru" in it's original Technicolor and it is wonderful, especially the outdoor scenes and, of course, the spectacular musical numbers. One wonders what they are keeping those Technicolor movies for, locked away in vaults.

When are the Vintage Technicolor Movies Going To Be Released ?

Thanks Will. Surprised at that, as the colour in "White Christmas" was stunning on the BD.

When are the Vintage Technicolor Movies Going To Be Released ?

Never heard of Amazon, eh ? Most of the pre-orders were sold out before people got to buy them regularly and, even though they would be limited stock, my guess is that a lot of people wanted to still buy them. One only has to read all the write-ups to realise just how many people bought them...

When are the Vintage Technicolor Movies Going To Be Released ?

Yes, that's probably why they have released remastered Blu Ray copies of "King of Jazz" (30), "Glorifying the American Girl" (29), "The Dancing Pirate" (36) and recently "The Broadway Melody" (29) to name a few, to great success.

When are the Vintage Technicolor Movies Going To Be Released ?

Been reminded again about the fact that "The Vagabond King", from 1930, exists in an archive in it's original 2-Strip Technicolor and wondering when this great movie is going to be restored and released in it's original colour. Surely there is a market for vintage enthusiasts to buy this on Blu...

A few words about…™ The Long, Long Trailer – in Blu-ray

Lucy seemed to really like to push that age thing and the best one was , apart from "Mame", of course, "Yours, Mine and Ours" (68) where she has a baby at age 57 ! :). Meant to mention that the reviews really missed the point that "Trailer" is a really funny movie and one of Lucy's best comedies...

Alice Faye: The Lady with the Velvet Voice

I don't think that Alice was all that ambitious and was quite happy to be at home with her family, apart from her radio series , which was also a family show anyway, with Phil Harris. Apparently she was the only Fox star that didn't put up with Zanuck's temper and gave as good as she got from...

Alice Faye: The Lady with the Velvet Voice

Yes, apparently Tyrone Power was loaned out to MGM for "Marie Antoinette" in 1938 and, because of the rather small tole Power played in the movie, Zanuck never loaned out Tyrone again, while under contract to TCF.

Alice Faye: The Lady with the Velvet Voice

I remember reading that Alice Faye adored Fred Astaire , as did Betty Grable, and Alice must have been delighted, on loan-out to Universal, to do a dancing musical , "You're a Sweetheart" (1937), with some great dance numbers with the also terrific dancer , George Murphy. Murphy also did a...

Pre-Order Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) (Warner Archive Collection) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

Yes, I found Spencer Tracy's "Hyde" far more psychologically frightening than March's "Hyde", who looks very much made-up , as regards the make-up. Granted that it is an older movie and a pre-coder, but I still prefer the 1941 version, and also because of the wonderful performance from a very...

The Wizard of Oz returns to theater with a previously deleted musical number

I'm presuming it's the dance sequence to the Straw Man's "If I Only Had a Brain" number that was deleted for the most part. It must have been put back into the movie as it was edited out before the movie's release and does still exist in it's entirety. A great dance number from Ray Bolger.

As We Wait On Captain Blood Does Anyone Really Know How They Decided What Got The Technicolor Treatment

One of the main reasons for MGM not making many of the early musicals in Technicolor was the obviously frugal Mayer himself who decided that if b/w films were very popular, why go to the expense of filming movies in Technicolor. After all, it was only MGM, the most prestigious movie studio in...

As We Wait On Captain Blood Does Anyone Really Know How They Decided What Got The Technicolor Treatment

Yes, that is true , although Ginger insisted , in her book, that the whole movie was slated to be filmed in Technicolor, but RKO, due to financing that venture, had cold feet and decided not to film it in the expensive Technicolor. Interesting to note that "The Munsters" TV series, as late as...

As We Wait On Captain Blood Does Anyone Really Know How They Decided What Got The Technicolor Treatment

Yes, MGM were not making musicals in Technicolor up to about 1943. The only ones I can think of were "Sweethearts" (38) and "Bittersweet" (40) both, of course, Jeanette and Nelson operettas. Interesting to note that RKO, in the thirties, were considered the major studio for musicals (ala the...

    Lost Films Found

Yes, I love silent movies myself and have all those movies you mentioned, except "Dante's Inferno", I think. The copy I have of "Cabiria" is wonderful and what a great movie for it's time. Certainly Italy started the "epic" genre with a bang.

    Lost Films Found

Yes, unfortunately Jeanette made the mistake of signing up with Fox for a number of movies and completely regretted it as Fox were making rather "gutsy" stuff at that time, which didn't suit the star's style at all, as opposed to her previous studio, Paramount, who made much more glamorous style...

    Lost Films Found

They are all in existence, so I would just call them rare. It does seem a pity that Disney has the rights to all these movies, although I would imagine that most of them are public domain movies now and probably wouldn't have had their copyright renewed anyway, and hopefully some company, like...

Yes, it's tragedy that these films aren't available, especially when many of them are not lost, as you say. Do have "Death of a Champion", but no to the other ones. Yes, "Dumbbells in Ermine" sounds hilarious. Must admit that I haven't heard of any of the other films you mentioned at all, but...

Yes, saw "Follow Thru" myself and was very impressed with both the Technicolor and picture quality. Noticed that Buddy Roger's complete version of "Close Harmony" (29) has been found and it was be great if they released that on a DVD / Blu Ray. These movies do sell and don't really know why they...

Anyone else had their blu ray of Ben-Hur (1959) go bad?

Yes. my Blurays all played on my Panasonic Bluray player and have had no trouble with any of the Warners Blurays yet. The only good thing about Warners DVDs and Blurays is that they are all multi-region, but ,of course, often the DVDs have been faulty, either straight way or later on when...

    Lost Films Found

Just finished watching that magnificent 1925 version of “Ben-Hur”, on Bluray, and must say that it is the best of the two classic versions. Still the spectacular chariot race, but a far more beautiful and moving story, which seems much more sophisticated (surprisingly considering it’s a silent...

Anyone else had their blu ray of Ben-Hur (1959) go bad?

I bought the three Blu Ray set of the two classic "Ben-Hur" movies and had no trouble with them and just finished watching that magnificent 1925 version of “Ben-Hur”, on Bluray, and must say that it is the best of the two classic versions. Still the spectacular chariot race, but a far more...

Yes, I have a reasonable copy of "Sleepytime Gal". At least watchable picture quality, but, again, a very poor original print. Pity, as it was one of Judy Canova's best movies. Here's a public domain print of "Lorraine and the Lions" (without music audio) on the archive.org site, which you can...

    Lost Films Found

The horror of the history of Tiffany studios is that MGM bought the whole of their library, way back in about 1937 and then proceeded to destroy the negatives of them all for some unknown reason, so we are only left with prints that survived one way or another. Pity, because Tiffany was keen on...
