Robert Wise directed many good films, but never a great one; The Body Snatcher comes closest. So who should be given the lion's share of the credit, Wise or Lewton? Certainly Lewton is responsible for the scene with the blind singer, the most memorable thing in the movie.

Just because Brown is a big guy doesn't mean he knows how to throw a punch. Rod was a professional boxer.
Biting and swinging hammers is not how real men fight.
Funny that this was not a commercial success; it seems pretty sure-fire. One would think that after opening his own studio, Aldrich would have taken more care to produce things that made money. Was there ever a major American director who showed less regard for the tastes of the mass audience...

Do not know how integral the doppelganger device is to this movie, but it is one of the tired old tropes that can ruin a movie. And Stinky's evil identical twin, Smelly Fitzwizzle, feels the same way.
Several years earlier Van Alexander reached the pinochle of his career when he worked with Kay Starr. It was all downhill for him from there.
Personally, the only camping Stinky does is when he pitches a tent and roasts his weenie.
