Haven't posted here in some time, but I am disappointed to see how things like this can be given "10s". Where is the consistency? I've said as much about the "Picnic at Hanging Rock" 4K transfer a while back. The Godfather 50th anniversary "treatment", heavily discussed and frowned upon, has...
Sounds like a Godfather 50th anniversary application here, but it's being defended. More neutral white balance, grain removal, grain replacement, etc. I didn't like the Godfather reimagination, and I don't like what I'm seeing here. Both directors "signed off", but that doesn't mean much anymore.
Slight grain "management", but it looks a LOT better than the Blu-ray which has a lot more color noise that can be mistaken as more grain. The Blu-ray also has compression artifacts. No contest really.
I'm surprised this isn't the position of many forum members here as well, as this is an ethusiast forum and hobby. If we just watch whatever is given to us, I don't get the point of being here in the discussion.
That's a good post and sums things up nicely. I've already watched the docs and came away with the same conclusion. Jan for some reason turned to the dark side, like Michael. Not sure why, but maybe all the new tech was just too tempting. He worked on the 2007 set, so maybe he felt the need to...
Interesting read here about Jan and the 2007 work. Still a mystery why he did it so differently for the 2022 version per the doc on the disc and who approved it.

I have a very hard time believing the new look was due to some miscommunication during COVID - but that's just me. I mean people can (and do) review the footage as the colorist is working on it - it's not rocket science. This can now be done remotely pretty easily as well, so yeah...I have an...
As I said before, it's easier to show off a new release and promote it when people can see clear differences between it and a prior release. Had they kept the 2007 color timing/grade and just added a tiny bit of HDR and 4K, it wouldn't have looked too different TBH. Yes, some frames were cleaned...
I was only curious as to how GF3 was supposed to look - I don't care about the revision that is CODA and what was done in 2020. Sounds like GF3 was supposed to look (or originally looked) like it does on the 2008 BDs if the same colorist did the work. It is strange still that Mr. Willis also...
Why was your studio print not a proper color reference back in 2007? Also, did Mr. Willils not also see and approve the 2007 GF3 DC color timing? I'm a bit confused on this matter and why CODA has the correct color timing. My point was that if CODA can be anything, and if they decided to change...
I see, but why wasn't the studio print you were given not a proper color reference?
In this clip (from Feb, 2021) they talk about a "new audience" and coloring it differently. Perhaps then because of CODA, they did the same then to GF1 and GF2. All are now more neutral and "match" better for...
One thing that's interesting is that when CODA came out on BD (December, 2020), it also looked different than the GF3 2008 BD, with more neutral whites/colors, etc. It wasn't just a new edit, but it had new color timing. The 2022 4K maintains that similar look. So it perhaps the more "neutral...
FFC signed off on both 2008 and 2022. In terms of the look, I go with the DP, especially when it seems like it isn't even sure that FFC wanted the look the 2022s have on them.
I wouldn't say infurating, but yeah, a bummer - a missed opportunity. As much as I get into the details and the aim for perfection, I also understand reality, business decisions, etc. So I don't let it bother me too much in the grand scheme of things. The 2008 BDs still look fantastic. A...
I'm sorry if my post offended you. It was not my intent as I stated before to be condescending or to pick on you or anyone else. When I said,"Why get involved in technical discussions if they ruin your enjoyment of films? Why not just watch things on the crappiest TV you can find? I mean, it's...
I didn't mean it to be condescending, just to illustrate the point of the importance of cinematography (or not). I also don't understand why someone would participate in a forum and thread that is technical in nature if those technical details bother their enjoyment of movies.
Why get involved in technical discussions if they ruin your enjoyment of films? Why not just watch things on the crappiest TV you can find? I mean, it's all about the story, right? Great films will work on just about any TV/display device, but that's not what the point of this thread is, nor the...
Not all things are meant to be seen and exposed for. Good photography and cinematography have been like this. With the advent of HDR people seem to think that if a photo or a movie isn't exposing everything, the photographer or cinematographer did something wrong. I think it's more dramatic and...
When I first watched it, and saw the wedding scene, it really stuck out as odd in terms of color but also grain. It's just not a good look IMO - no texture, too neutral white balance, yuck! I can't believe they are showcasing that - those folks in the back look B&W and like some Sgt. Pepper's...
I was on the fence based on these caps. Could be true, may not be, but there is a difference. The Kino seems to have cranked up the contrast, and maybe even the sharpening, though the latter can be a result of the cranked contrast. Thoughts...
