    A Few Words About A few words about...™ 2001: a space odyssey -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I love this release. I can’t imagine it being any better than this. But, if ever there was a film worthy of a detailed doc about the restoration history and process, then this is the one. A golden opportunity missed imo.

I’ll throw in a curved ball here by admitting I’m still watching on a Panasonic 43” plasma, so the restored Blu is the only option. The 4K disc will have to stay in the case for the time being. However old the technology is inside the set may be, I have to say the pq is simply stunning. It may...

Pre-Order 2001: A Space Odyssey (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

With regards to the UHD, please everyone, completely disregard the 70mm unrestored. Forget its existence. It is not relevant to this release. It was a good experience, but, as the title implies, the print had many issues. End of. It’s time is done. My question is, why would WB degrade the...

Pre-Order 2001: A Space Odyssey (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

While the unrestored 70mm was a great experience, I still don’t understand the reasoning behind it. By definition there were some issues with the print, though not nearly as many as I feared. It’s just that there was a fully restored drop dead gorgeous version sitting on the shelf ready to blow...

Pre-Order 2001: A Space Odyssey (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

Don’t forget there are quite a few of us who have been lucky enough to see the theatrical 4K. And I think I’m right in saying that most if not all that have seen it are very happy with the colour palette. There is no teal, except where one would imagine the director wanted it. As long as the...

Well, I don’t know about the technical bit, but the 70mm unrestored was neither as bright or as dark as I remember it to be. I have a distinct memory of those very bright beams of white light passing over my head from the projection room first time round. And those diamond white stars were set...

Teal? What Teal? As someone lucky enough to have seem both the unrestored 70mm and now the restored DCP, I have good news. Having just returned from seeing the 4K, I have been reminded in no uncertain terms as to how beautiful this film is. I think whoever prepared “that” YT trailer, was winding...

However, by what people say about Kubrick being a perfectionist, I’m not sure he would be totally happy with his creation looking anything other than prestine. Which begs the question... what chance the new restoration making it to the giant screen? Will it be worth it? Doubtless there will be...

Yep, looked and sounded great in London. Even with the bits of “damage”, the experience was fantastic. Still looking forward to the 4K restoration on Monday though.

I’d be more confident if you had been involved with this restoration. Your work on my other fav film My Fair Lady was frankly miraculous given your account as to the sorry state of the original sources. Bravo from this newbie.

In all fairness, the local Vue cinema is marvellous. State of the art and extremely comfortable. I’ve not seen a bad presentation there. Blade Runner 2049 was stunning in both pq and sound. So, I have high expectations. As I said elsewhere, I’m hoping this showing will provide a bit of a clue as...

I’m in the UK. Unfortunately, our cinemas tend to be operated by people who generally, haven’t got a clue as to the technicalities, so the amount of information I can extract from them will be limited to say the least.

I was at the Picturehouse last Thursday. What a screen that is. Wow! Unfortunately, I don’t think Vue are expecting big audiences for this. It’s been tucked away on Screen 7, which I’m assuming to be quite small. The one in Bicester is state of the art so I’m expecting good things. Bearing in...

Yes, there will certain markers I will be looking for. Depth of blacks for one. Also, the purity of the whites. And the much discussed teal strength or otherwise.

Thank you Sunnove. It seems I can rest easy. My showing at Vue is 7pm Monday. Getting quite excited by this now. I just hope the scan satisfies! Fingers crossed. Otherwise, these boards will light up worldwide. I’m sure we all want to see justice done to this masterpiece.

The good ship Aniversary does seem to be sailing without a rudder. Not befitting of such a magnificent film. Like many others here, I will soon know once the image appears on screen as to what we’re dealing with. As per Synnove’s post above, the way the film is being promoted by the cinema, I’m...

Oh-oh. You’ve got me worried now. I saw the ad “50th anniversary High Definition” They can’t just show the existing Blu-Ray can they? I will know when I see it though. I will recognise the signs. Feeling a bit stupid now.

Well, as much as I enjoyed my recent 70mm experience in London, from what you say, I must conclude the project to be a failure. The absolute blacks you refer to, were absent on this showing. Dark greys for sure but not inky black. And some of the star fields (in certain shots) were light greeny...

Well, the Stargate sequence on the huge screen in London last week was still totally immersive after all these years and the sound was loud and proud. The movie, warts and all, has lost none of its power and majesty. It is still the crowning glory of the Sci Fi genre imo.

Hi all. Long time lurker from the UK here. Having just seen the 70mm “Unrestored” in London, which I enjoyed immensely, despite the occasional bits of wear and tear. On June 4th, I will get to see the new 4K restored version, arebeit on a much smaller screen. It will be a most interesting...
