There's another "hybrid" possibility, (or 3a!) as i believe occurred with the 4K of "The Martian" (and possibly others). Non-SFX shots were re-scanned from Negative in native 4K. The SFX shots were upscaled from 2K>4K. The final 4K master is a hybrid of the two.
A v odd technical decision, Aliens must be one of the first pre-DI 35mm films that’s been upscaled for UHD from an extant 2K master, when the negative could have been entirely rescanned in native 4K.
They must have had their reasons, but i can’t think of any good ones.
I’ve no idea who that poster is or any tech credentials they may have, but there appears to be assumptions made, without evidence and presented as fact - such as it’s a poor quality 2K upscale.
With regard to the colour range, they could be bang on, i’ve no idea, but we do know that the end...
"The question remains why Lightstorm Entertainment or Park Road Post Production elected *Not* to scan the OCN and properly remaster the film and choose AI Picture Enhancement on the 2010 2K DI from Reliance MediaWorks"
This has been mentioned before, but AFAIK no-one has confirmed that's the...
Yes, but to get back to the point, as i stated, different consumers (and creators) want different things, and your comments illustrate the differences in opinion perfectly between just two!
Tried driving a 650+ bhp rwd car in the wet/snow!? Look at the drag race conducted with the last DBS in the wet, the car was not facing forward for part of it!
There is always going to be a balance (or not) between what several types of consumer want, and what the creator wants and does.
I wish Aston Martin made a 4WD Vantage.
I wish Star Wars OT was available in branching where you could choose some of the changes that were made in the reduxes, but...
Even if unfixed they score poorly for picture quality by several reviewers, look terrible (for a modern film) to the average viewer and sales tank as a result, causing studios to think “if Aliens flopped on UHD, we won’t release xyz”
I’m confused.
Mr Harris has stated the films look has been revised, he’s said some will object.
The director is alive and is behind the change, not only that but this is not the first director-approved major change to the look of this film on home video, the 2010 blu was degrained then...
Wikipedia is wrong, i can think of major studio releases well into the late 80’s in mono - Naked Gun & Police Academy 6 for a start.
Also i don’t believe you’ve “got” what others have asked…a motion picture original soundtrack -i.e. album or OST release and the film soundtrack (what is...
Studios have departments (and budgets) for preservation that have nothing to do with home video/streaming/popularity.
With no existing useable masters, even decades old and SD, and possibly deteriorating original elements, the studios make choices daily over whether to save something, leave it...
The beauty of posts like that is that it says absolutely nothing. No release date (even year!), no verified sources, no tech specs. It's just a title that has sold well previously, in a genre that sells well, and is more than likely to appear on 4K at some point.

Knowing your dislike of how “restoration” has become such a misused term Mr Harris, this is high praise.
Could you expand on how this has gone beyond scan-colour correct-cleanup-DI etc?
As there’s no official review on HTF… i bought this blind knowing that it’s always looked crap be it on TV or dvd.
A lower-budget independent film from the mid-80’s, my expectations were low, it says 2021 HD transfer, but not from what!
Well i was pleasantly surprised, on an OLED it appeared...
There is all sorts of anecdotes about Premier prints for Bond films, 6 track for Thunderball/You only…, 4 track for OHMSS, 3 track stereo for Golden Gun…
All entirely possible
Apparently James Ellroy saw the 3 hr rough/director’s cut and loved it, before it was mutilated down to two hours…i’m surprised Scream/Kino etc haven’t licenced it, any one know if the files/workprint still exists?
FotR was originally finished in 35mm, TTT & RotK were shot in 35mm, but finished as very early 2K DI's with it's SDR colour corrections.
All original effects were at a max of 2K, poss HD or less.
For the new 4K DI's there has been limited tech info - there looks to be some upscaling for...
Mr Harris, are you aware of any plans to issue/re-issue LOA as a standalone 4K UHD? I’m amazed of the many titles on the format, but for that to be unavailable seems bizarre, especially given its status.
Many thanks
I think it’s one of those films that has such an engrained cultural appeal in it’s country of origin that it is what it is and those who love it, love it warts ‘n’ all!
As a brit, i love it!

It just seems a vicious circle, every time Mr Harris, or someone else, doesn't endorse a 4K release, and states why, you respond, when if he wasn’t honest with his reviews they wouldn’t be as useful as they are.
Caveat Emptor!
