The funniest thing about the controversy was Mickey Rooney publicly slamming the film...and then starring in Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker!
Bob, what were the conventions for shooting in widescreen in France. Diabolique looks open matte to me, and that is from 1955. Breathless seems to be Academy, but that isn't exactly the norm
I'm actually largely content with the colour timing on the transfer. It's much darker than usual but it's not been tealed or anything, and it's far superior to the Warner DVD. However, I'd be interested in seeing Warner have another crack at it for a Blu-Ray.
The extras on this set are superb...
On the old UK DVD of Halloween, the original mono and 4.0 surround tracks got mixed up, so what is encoded as mono is the remix and what is encorded as the surround is the original audio.
Were the mattes visible in correctly timed prints though? I never saw them in the Tie Fighter battle until I watched them on someone's tv where he'd jacked up the brightness to silly levels - original version here too.
Criterion's Red River looks like their Yojimbo and The Magician - very boosted whites, which I don't care for. But at least I won't have to try and find the subtitles this time!
Well, I wouldn't want to encourage new scenes...
I've noticed some films now have new copyrights on as reinforcement, such as Things to Come (nothing like an ITV copyright marring the final shot of a 1930s classic).
So much for the 4K restoration...
MPEG-2 (has VCI ever done otherwise) and watermarks? Pathetic!
I think the Kino Raw is ok once one increases the brightness on the monitor. I think the grain is too much due to the transfer favouring deep blacks over a balanced greyscale.
The subtitled prints for Hong Kong movies frequently were awful - some of the subtitles barely qualified as English. They were done in Hong Kong for the "benefit" of the English speakers there, and also for government requirements. Tsui Hark once wrote to a US critic apologising for the subtitles...

I don't think I've ever seen Ben Affleck in anything so my not feeling very impressed by this announcement is pure snobbery. The same pure snobbery that made me dismiss Heath Ledger because he was "that blonde kid from A Knight's Tale." I was wrong there!
And it's Batman so I'm sure it will be...
Brenty, which Chaplins are you referring to?
For me, Enter The Dragon is the big one. How many times has it been re-released now, and not once has the original theatrical version been included?
Another thing is - the 16mm prints that showed up for reruns and such hid detail because they were lower resolution then the fomat they were shot on, and cropped.
