This is the 'best' quality available of this title and until we see the BFI source, we take this VCI bluray and move on.
I would agree 100% that the Sutton/de Valle commentary is really sad. Were they even watching the film? Blind/mute Lew is not Henry Stewart! OHG! How can you screw that up? We...
Sadly, am afraid that many of the younger generation could care less about these films. Film history....history of any kind, does not seem to matter to them.I hope I am wrong. We now see 'archive series' films presented on the horrid dvd-r made on demand discs.....yes, it's all about the money...
Thanks Bob for all of your hard work!We sincerely appreciate your dedication and love of film.It is always a joy to see films restored to their best possible presentations, so we can now add DB to the list of success stories.
Watched From the Earth to the Moon (1958) last night on TCM. It was shown with Academy ratio, but is listed on their site as 1.85:1.TCM info is not always correct, but surely this was a widescreen film, perhaps one 'protected for academy?' There did seem to be a lot of headroom in many...
Why must titles be 'zoomboxed' for dvd/bluray?Why can't they just be their original, intended AR?Is it because they think the 16x9 screen must be filledat all cost?I love this thread and the info I have learned from it and the 3d thread, but this is maddening to me.
Am hoping someday to find definitive versions of LugosiPhantom Creeps serial and Human Monster.Agree that VCI can also be hit or miss, but that can be said of the major studios too, unfortunately
Agree. Will wait for some reviews before making the purchase. I have the Roan DVD, and have not shelled out $ for the Kino bluray, due to the reviews.Have learned that just because it is a bluray, does not mean it is far better than the dvd.
Aspect ratio question.TCM showed Godzilla, King of the Monsters last night. It was in Academy, the only way I have ever seen it on tv, but the end credits were letterboxed for widescreen.I never heard of GKOM, or the original Gojira, as shot for widescreen.
I am truly sorry, as I failed to set this as a seperate topic. No excuses....failed to follow the rules.I enjoy HTF via cell phone, not pc, and did not set topic as I should.
Third Dimensional Murder, a 3d short from 1941, was on TCM last night. It was interesting to see the Frankenstein monster, in close to the same makeup that we see in Son of Frankenstein from 1939.Wonder if Universal got any $ for use of their patented Jack Pierce makeup?
How many if you sit through a movie until the final credit?Personally, I wait until the very end, to when the screen goes blank....maybe I am weird, but in addition to seeing the movie itself, I wanted to know the name of everyone involved, not just the cast but everyone.
Agree with all of the above comments. It does make me wonder who makes these decisions.I know that many of us, if given the job to bring any film to bluray or dvd, especially a classic, would take pride in our work to make certain that the best film elements were used, the correct AR was used...
Saw him in the early 70's with Tammy Wynette at Panther Hall Ballroom in Fort Worth. TX. True to form, George failed to appear in their first set of the night...Tammy went on solo until they found him and sobered him up enough to go on stage, about an hour and a half later.
I also saw The Alamo when it premiered here in Fort Worth, TX.I also have the vinyl LP soundtrack. It saddens me that so much of our film history is lost...or in the process of being lost forever.
Now it is April 19, 2013......and like you, hope that a new pristine dvd or bluray will come soon.Suggest we contact the folks at Criterion and request it... Not sure Universal Home Video would care.....sadly.

Has anyone had experience with the Blick 3d glasses?I have a Sony Hz800....and wear prescription glasses, so not very uncomfortable when trying them on at BB.
Looking forward to the House of Wax 3D bluray.Movie Tavern is showing Dial M for Murder in 3D, am planning to go to the 11:30 am showing here in Ft Worth, Tx tomorrow.
