DIY Home theater sub project help

No I don't have an spl meter. I've been looking at a few spl meters available online locally and they all have frequency ranges from 31.5hz - 8khz are these some magic numbers ?. Why don't they go up to 20khz ? Would they most likely measure sound outside those parameters but need a correction...

DIY Home theater sub project help

I'd sooner make a new box. Today I plugged the ports with the foam and gave it a test run. I'm quite sure the frequency response is better than it was. I've reconnected my ep2500 and giving it much more power now. I'm very confused about what I'm supposed to hear between 20-25hz. I get lots of...

Here's the foam I was talking about. Almost resembles the same density that HSU uses with their subs

DIY Home theater sub project help

I haven't tried this but I'm interested to see what happens, I have very dense packing foam at work that I could cut to shape and try. Robert, could you suggest modifications to my enclosure to achieve 25hz tuning ?

Here are the dimensions of my enclosure. The MDF is actually 20mm thick, not 15mm. Can you approximate what the enclosure is tuned to given these dimensions ?

DIY Home theater sub project help

You raise some interesting points Robert. I suppose it is only a graphic EQ after all. I will consider a parametic EQ when funding allows. At present my ep2500 is sitting in my cabinet disconnected because running the sub off this little amplifier seems to be doing the job. I'm confused as to...

DIY Home theater sub project help

No problem type A. I'm considering purchasing a decibel meter to graph frequency response. What I'd like to see is how these two amplifiers compare when driving my 18" sub. For the ep2500, the Sansui will be used as a pre-amp so EQ settings will remain the same.

DIY Home theater sub project help

Thanks Robert and schan for your input. Wow had an interesting day today testing out my setup. I have many topics to cover. First off, I had a different amp to try my sub with. Now this is funny, my dad was kind enough to loan me his old Sansui class A amplifier from 1978! Its only 100w per...

DIY Home theater sub project help

Ok the Sub is in my living room now. But does anyone know how to set the low pass filter on these sony a/v receivers ? The model is an strdn1020. I can hear the lower octaves of peoples voices when I'm watching movies. Will I need to install a crossover between the sony receiver and my behringer...

DIY Home theater sub project help

ok if I can save space and go deeper at the same time.. then sealed it is :) oh and robertj has helped me in the past.. hope he can chime in at some stage edit.. Are sealed enclosures usually smaller than ported ? Reading the manual of this sub tells me the opposite is true

DIY Home theater sub project help

Interesting schan1269 but a Trans Line is to tall / crazy for what I was thinking hehe. I'd prefer a more conventional design. I know to satisfy the lower frequencies a ported enclosure is usually recommended. But if it means the enclosure is a little smaller than I can always go for sealed as...

DIY Home theater sub project help

After much hesistation back and forth, I've finally gone ahead and purchased a 2nd hand Behringer ep 2500 to run an 18" sub. I live in New Zealand and my original plan was to buy a stereo integrity 18" sub and import it with their resonable shipping costs. But just this morning I came accross a...

New House, High Ceilings, need more sub

Ok the only BIC PL-200 I can see on ebay does not ship international. However... I have now expanded my budget to include the HSU VTF-2 MK4. I see their amps are 230v compatible and they informed me by email they can ship to New Zealand. So now I'm just waiting on a shipping quote.

Correction I can see the BIC PL-200 on ebay and have contacted the seller to see if I can get international shipping. So lets throw that sub into the mix as well for now.

New House, High Ceilings, need more sub

Hi Robert_J good to see you still active here and thanks for your advice. I must be honest and say I don't really have the time or patience for a DIY build right now with other unrelated projects and work etc taking up a lot of my time. I've found that importing speakers from the states is very...

New House, High Ceilings, need more sub

Just bumping my own thread as I'm still contemplating cost effective sub options for my high ceiling house. I've come across this 2nd hand sub. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=680695611 http://www.audioenz.co.nz/2005/image_avs200-2.shtml It's a 12inch sub in a relatively large...

Yes thats true. 1000Wrms amps are quite common in NZ. 18" + subs are not. Probably best I coincide this with my next trip over to Australia. In the mean time I can make an enclosure like the examples already posted.

Spoke on the phone with this company and shipping the 18" is $173 USD or $319 USD for the 21". It's a shame because this shop is literally 5mins from my old house when I lived in Australia.

A pre-order on that 21" IST is very tempting. But shipping weight is 57kg! I'll post back with a shipping cost today.

Thanks Gerald, I've just emailed them for a shipping quote on there IST mach 5 18". It will most likely be expensive as it weights over 20kg. I do occasionally visit Australia so I could always box it up and travel back with it next time I'm there.

You know your addicted when... :D And here's me thinking one 15" is enough. I hope you don't influence me to buy more subs. I have bills to pay hehe

This is my old living space. When I first moved in and had no speakers. I miss the basic rectangle shaped room with hard wood floors it was so good for SPL hehe.

I like that enclosure, very solid build. I could start the enclosure build as a project until I cant afford the rest of the gear. Lucky for me I have access to a lot of the tools I need at work.

Thanks Sean and Robert very interesting. I will check over my amp settings to make sure nothings changed with my crossovers. My sub is all configured with my remote and I'm positive thats not causing any problems. 99% sure the room area is the problem. Robert those subs all look very nice, but...

Interesting thanks for that software, I've already downloaded it and will get around to installing it asap. No there is no doorway behind the left speaker. I just played a few songs that hit low notes around the 40-60hz mark and it just sounds quiet and muffled now. At my old house the bass...

OK robert. You've helped me in the past, not sure if you can remember. Is a 'home theater' sub necessary or will a car audio 18" do ? Is 4 ohm the standard for both types?

My little 10" mission m6as used to shake plates in my kitchen at my old place. Now it sounds and feels weak. My ceilings were low and I could close all the doors leading into my lounge room which was perfect . The house I live in now is quite open, it's an old house sorry for the misleading...

Floor Standing speakers advice [Energy CF30 / TANNOY FUSION 4 or PSB Image T45??]

Ok I just tested the mission e54, m64i and energy c300 side by side in a sound room. Hands down the m64i outperform the e54. The c300 has slightly more bass (barely noticable) than the m64i but mids are far better on the m64i, very tidy sounding speaker. They are all the same price. e54's are...
