A little off topic, but if you're a fan of "A Matter of Life and Death", try to see the South Korean afterlife fantasy "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds". Lots of imagination and a great sense of fun. Not many films remind me of the Archers but this one did.
I'll watch absolutely anything with Lee Marvin or Toshiro Mifune in it, so to watch them together is a no-brainer for me. Glad to hear the Blu is worth a buy.
^ Yes, I went back and skipped through different scenes and didn't have any problem with sound synchronisation. And I didn't get any English subtitles for the first song either, although the main title is subtitled in English after selecting "sans" subtitles from the menu. And again the image...
That's odd, Robin9. I didn't notice any issues with the sound sync playing back on my Oppo 93, although it was only a quick run through and I wasn't paying as much attention as you obviously did. I was also able to remove the subtitles at the menu stage, first by selecting the English version...
I hope your patience is rewarded, OliverK.
Even if they do turn out to be the same transfer, you can at least take comfort from the fact that it's nothing like the Sidonis "Comanche Station" release. Those caps all look like recreations of movie scenes by Madame Tussauds!
Yes, looking closely at the disc (and getting right up to the screen) there might be a little edge enhancement/digital manipulation, which isn't unusual from Universal. But in motion the film looks excellent.
And don't equate this Elephant release with others from Sidonis. I agree that Blus and...
Can't speak for Alvarez Kelly, but received my copy of "Night Passage" from Amazon France and can report there are no forced subtitles on the English-language version. There are three "versions" you can select from at the man menu: two with French audio (stereo and mono), and one with English...
Came here to share in the excitement over "Ride the High Country" only to find out "Junior Bonner" and "The Rounders" are coming too! "Junior Bonner" is one of my favourite Peckinpahs and the letterboxed DVD transfer is awful so the Blu can't come quickly enough. And I probably like "The...
I really like the film, too, Reggie. The interplay between the characters is excellent. Unfortunately, the DVD is pretty horrible, and coupled with the earthy colour palette (very different to the Mann/Stewart films), that makes it difficult to watch. Judging by the screen shots there is some...
It's been released in France by Sidonis.

Review (in French) here...
For fans of Gloria Grahame, I can highly recommend this book, "Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool": https://www.amazon.com/Film-Stars-Dont-Die-Liverpool/dp/0802100422
Track down a copy if you can.
^ Keach did a great job with "The Killer Inside Me" (directed by Burt Kennedy, of all people) in 1976, again with Susan Tyrrell. Really worth seeing if you can track a copy down.
Some absolutely great recommendations here. Of the films listed, don't miss "Ulzana's Raid" (I think Universal did an "On Demand" pressing of this, which is excellent), "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (Criterion), "The Seven Ups" (almost as good as "The French Connection") and "Junior Bonner"...
I first saw this was I was a kid, probably 11 or 12, and it scared the absolute bejesus out of me. Not because of the violence, which I loved (what kid wouldn't like those cool battles in the arenas?), but because of the horrible realisation that Jonathan was doomed. The entire machinery of...
This is probably my favourite film from the Archers, which is really saying something. I'd love to see it looking as lovely as it should.
(And your avatar makes it easy to tell how much you love it, Yorkshire :) )
You're talking about Richard Brooks? You're forgetting either "Bite the Bullet" (1975) or "The Last Hunt" (1956) - probably the latter. "The Last Hunt" is absolutely fantastic, way up in the top tier of Westerns in my opinion, although it never seems to get much notice. The fact it only exists...
The book's ending is pretty much the same and open to the same interpretations. Shane is shot, badly, but he summons the strength to get out of the saloon, get on his horse and ride away. He tells Bob (who is the narrator of the book) that he has to ride away because "there's no going back from...
I really like "The Last Frontier", too - the relationship between Victor Mature and Anne Bancroft is unusual to say the least.
Great that "Laramie" will be getting the deluxe treatment. I think Grover Crisp is responsible for the transfers of "Major Dundee", "Jubal" and "3:10 to Yuma" - which...
With the exception of "Cimarron", those are all great, great movies. Mann was a flat-out amazing filmmaker and I'd happily buy each of the films you've listed. I think "The Furies" and "Devil's Doorway" are very underrated, as is "The Tin Star", which people tend to forget because it doesn't...
For the John Sturges lovers in this thread, I can really recommend the excellent bio/critical appreciation "Escape Artist: The Life ad Films of John Sturges" by Glenn Lovell. Well worth a read.
Really impressed by the transfer of this, too, and looking forward now to watching the theatrical "mutilated" version, which I've never seen.
It's also worth pointing out that as imperfect a movie as this may be, it's still an extraordinary one, with strong acting, lovely cinematography and some...
Just popped my copy of "Major Dundee" in the player for a quick look at the first disc. First impressions are very good - nice detail and colour in the few scenes I saw. Made me remember just how much I like the film, warts and all…
That would be an AWESOME collection - Eastwood's apprenticeship with Don Siegel in one box. I haven't seen it, but there is also a Brazilian Blu-ray of "Two Mules for Sister Sara", released last year: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Two-Mules-for-Sister-Sara-Blu-ray/55633/
