Hi, interesting as l did not know of a 70mm print of Aliens Directors Cut I thought it was only a DCP release. I would love to have heard the DTS track as the 70mm Dolby stereo of the original print was one of the best.
In london we had some great cinemas with tube amps which the 6 track stereo sounded fantastic. I remember going up the Empire box and the chief Alan showing me the Quad 405 amps which I think were put in for Logans Run and that still sounded fab.
I saw The Prince and the Pauper in 4- track Stereo at the Carlton Haymarket in London and also Oliver Reed plus guests were setting in front of me, This was the last film at the Carlton before it changed to the Classic Haymarket.
The Latest 70mm print has colour timing issues and of course Datasat 5.1 audio which is very good.
The 1989 restoration looks so much better on 70mm and the 6 track mag SR track is excellent if you can find a good print.
The last time I saw a 70mm print was at the Plaza and the ABC 2 Shaftsbury Avenue in London in 1977, that was a 2.20 version , but I did see a 4K DCP on the Cinerama screen in Bradford a few years ago that was the full 2.76 version and it did look excellent for a digital screening.
Yes the Astoria Charing Cross Road was a great cinema. The last films they run were a season of 70mm classics including
The Wild Bunch, Scrooge, Funny Lady, My Fair Lady, I saw them all and they all looked and sounded really good.
I saw TFOTRE at NFT in the 70s and it looked great , I was lucky...
Re the surround channels on this film ,when I saw the only 3 panel print at Bradford a few times I remember hearing the cannon fire at the start come down the sides of the theatre , on a video I have seen the late John Michell re recording
an original 7 track soundtrack of Grimm which has VS on...
I have a UK dvd which is 4.3 mono. I hope that this new version has a stereo track.
I saw a 70mm extract of this a few years ago in bradford and the print still had a bit of colour and the 6 track stereo was fantastic.
