I agree that the ending of the original POTA remains shocking. Unfortunately, if you think about it for a moment or two, it makes absolutely no sense, because why and how would the astronauts on this spaceship in the midst of an exploratory mission far from earth -- as in millions of miles --...
True, but 142 minutes is considerably shorter than 176 minutes (or 183 minutes). And also, MIDSUMMER was a film version of a Shakespeare play, not a biomusical.
Thank you, sir. I am aware of the length of those other films, but as you say, GONE WITH THE WIND was several years later, and as for the others, I'm rather amazed that THE GREAT ZIEGFELD was considerably longer than all of those.
Sorry I posted in the wrong place, let's try again: I have never seen this film, and I had no idea it's three hours long. Isn't that EXTREMELY unusual for a film made at that time?
Mr. Harris, can you explain what you mean about the aspect ratio being incorrectly stated as 1.33:1? Wasn't that the standard for the time?
Also: I believe another reason why this film is not considered a classic is the fact that -- SPOILER ALERT -- the ending of the play was rewritten so that...
I'm flabbergasted that so many people love this film. A very few powerful scenes aside (e.g., the ones with Einstein), I found it incredibly boring and pretentious, and I couldn't wait for it to end. Also, I think it's weird that the director made such a big deal about shooting in large format...
If Hitchcock actually said that about Psycho, I assume it was an example of an artist making a completely outrageous statement about one of his creations just for the sake of being outrageous and getting people talking. But of course, it's impossible to imagine that he actually viewed that movie...
Hey, what would be the reason for select edits like this? Is it because they sprung for the money to pay music rights for certain selections but not others? Or is it possible that the music retained was in the public domain, for example, opera music?
I believe that's true of CAROUSEL but not for the reason you said. Apparently, the sound recording was problematic during some of the location shooting because of wind, etc. THE KING AND I was shot almost entirely indoors, so it wasn't a problem there, and I don't see or hear any noticeable...
Agreed about THE BOYS IN THE BAND. I think that movie's reputation has only improved with time, so I'm a little surprised it wasn't mentioned more favorably and more prominently in Friedkin's obits.
How interesting that Friedkin chose to do a remake (or a new version, if you will) of THE CAINE MUTINY COURT MARTIAL when there is not only the 1954 theatrical film but also a 1988 TV movie directed by Robert Altman, with a cast that included Eric Bogosian, Jeff Daniels, Brad Davis, and Peter...
Thanks. I've never really tried using the programmable ones. Are they difficult to program? And are they more difficult to program if you want to use them for more than one device?
Hi, all. This may be a tough one to answer, but I've received very helpful info regarding previous, weird tech problems through the HTF, so here goes: I have a fairly old Sony Blu-Ray player and a far older SONY AV System/amplifier, and in both cases, the functionality of the remote controls is...
Hi, if I am watching live TV with the sound coming directly through the speakers on the smart TV itself, the sound is in perfect sync; but when I turn on my 5/1 stereo system and listen through that, the sound is noticeably out of sync, with maybe a half-second delay. Can I assume this is due...
"Best decision they made with Mr Magoo was to play the story straight. Any nearsighted jokes were limited to the wrap around where Magoo was starring on Broadway in a production of A Christmas Carol. I always thought someone should obtain the rights to the music of the TV show and used it in a...
There are other big production numbers in OKLAHOMA! besides the ballet. If they had room to stage "Kansas City" and "The Farmer and the Cowman," they should have had room to do the ballet, even if they had to downsize it a bit. Maybe they just felt they didn't have strong enough dancers for the...
Thanks for clarifying. I do not agree that Juanita Hall talks in "Charlie Chan style dialect" in the movie. The only person who comes close to doing so is Benson Fong as the father, because he is supposed to be the least Americanized of all the characters and the one who is not as fluent in...
Are you referring to the DVD? I think the film looks and sounds great in that transfer, old as it may be. But I ordered the Blu-Ray as soon as I read about it :-)
I know, but Noel Aguirre wrote that Juanita fall was "wearing yellow face" for the movie, so I wondered if he was referring to actual makeup. No big deal, I'm sure a lot of people object to the casting regardless.
I know she's not Asian. I was asking if you meant that she used makeup to make herself look Asian, or if you just meant that she was doing "yellow face" in the sense that she is a non-Asian playing an Asian, with makeup or not.
