A Few Words About A few words about...™ Rear Window -- in Blu-ray

Just watched the movie yesterday at a local theater from a DCP. The quality overall seemed good, but every now and then, inferior quality shots appeared. Then the quality would get back with the next shot change, and then, sometimes the film used again the "bad looking" shot (of course, covering...

UHD Review A Few Words About While we wait for a few words about...™ The Godfather(s) -- in 4k UHD

Reading here that the "Coppola Restorations" blu-rays were a little too red drives me crazy. I paid good money for them, and they were supposed to be the definitive edition, representative of a very careful restoration... Why the hell were they too red??? Do we have to buy the movie once again...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

I recently bought and watched Kino's blu ray edition of Three Women, directed by Ernst Lubitsch. I really enjoyed the film! Because of some negative comments I had heard, I was expecting a minor or even boring Lubitsch, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I was entertained all the way...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Dracula aka Horror of Dracula -- in Blu-ray

Although the color timing seems correct in the Warner Blu Ray, where the Lionsgate disc was way too blue, I'd say that the shadow detail was better in the UK edition, dark areas don't look as crushed in it as they do in the US disc.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ A Night at the Opera – in Blu-ray

One Marx aficionado discovered that a print at Hungary's national film archive has a few bits of extra footage that aren't available anywhere else. Apparently he let WB know about this, but his discovery was met with total indifference. It's such a shame: if the extra footage is there, it would...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ Cinema Paradiso – in 4k UHD

It's interesting, I liked the Director's Cut. I watched it before I watched the theatrical version, and the latter one seemed to me hollower by comparison, story-wise.

The first reel looked far worse than the rest of the movie in the DVD. Did they use a better source for that for this restoration?

    Issue with projector JVC RS35

Thanks a lot for your answer! I'm using the "normal" preset for gamma, the iris is stopped down to -6 and color saturation is at -10. The lamp is working in eco mode (I don't remember what the name of the preset was, but you know what I mean, it's the "saving energy" mode: since the projector...

    Issue with projector JVC RS35

Hello everyone! I have a JVC RS35 projector, and I'm very happy with it so far. My only complaint is that sometimes, when a single shot includes very bright areas next to very dark ones, the light from the bright areas seems to affect the darker areas, making them look slightly washed out. It...

La Belle Noiseuse Coming in Early 2018

I loved Cohen's blu ray of this (the transfer is superb), but I wonder about the aspect ratio. Was it originally conceived to be shown in 1.37:1? I mention this because in two different moments of the film, one can clearly see a boom mic in the lower part of the screen, it's quite distracting...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ North by Northwest -- in Blu-ray

I loved this release. However, precisely because it was so great in terms of colour and resolution, a couple of shots with problems stood out for me very prominently. It's the two last Cary Grant shots before his car stops, in the scene where he's driving drunk. Something happens to the color in...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The General & Steamboat Bill, Jr. (Cohen) -- in Blu-ray

I own the three US editions of Steamboat Bill Jr.: Cohen, Kino (standalone) and the Kino edition that comes with College. This last one, the Lobster version, doesn't have the exposure problems that the other two have; the differente in the way the shadows look is striking. Definition, however...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection — in Blu-ray

I'm not sure about Animal Crackers, but I think Cocoanuts is definetely cropped, the main titles at the beggining of the movie seem to have the original aspect ratio. Could you confirm that it wasn't possible to scan this film in its original aspect ratio because of the available elements?

A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection — in Blu-ray

Are the original aspect ratios respected? I understand that the image in both Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers should be narrower than 1,33:1. I understand that this won't make the films any funnier, but if we're talking about a restoration, it seems pointless to have the films cleaned up and...

Blu-ray Review The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection Blu-ray Review

As far as I know, Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers (and according to IMDB Monkey Business too) had an original OAR of 1.20:1. In the old video transfers, only the credits were not cropped. It was announced somewhere that the new BRs would respect the aspect ratio of the movies. If it really is...

    A PEEK AT PLAYTIME

I think the newer transfer has the color scheme right where the older was inaccurately blueish. This belief is not because I like my Playtime greenish better, but because of a book. When Playtime was restored and re-released in 2002, a book detailing the history of the film and the reconstruction...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada TV Series -- in Blu-ray

I've always wondered what size of film they used to shoot this series. Looking at the images, they never look like 16mm to me, so my guess would be 35mm, but in many books it is stated that the first show to be shot in 35mm was The Sign of Four, something allowed by an increase in the usual...

HAMMER FILM BLU-RAYS IN THE U.K. ... getting closer to the Holy Grail (DRACULA, 1958)...

I don't know about how correct the colour is in the BR captures, but in the Hammer blog, a guy named Bill Lettang wrote: Of course, we don't know how reliable he is as a source but, assuming he doesn't lie... is it possible that a faded print can look excessively blue-ish? Other questions that...
