    A Few Words About A few words about...™ Ronin -- in Blu-ray

Mamet's role in polishing the screenplay was known right from the start but he claimed to have used the pseudonym precisely so as to not detract from J.D. Zeik's work as the original author, who was making his debut.

THE BIG CLOCK is available on a decent Blu-ray edition in Germany - see the caps-a-holic DVD vs Blu-ray comparison here.

Rathbone Holmes Blu uses unrestored prints?

As far as I can tell, the Llamentol releases of the Brett Holmes series are not bootlegs. The rights holders are all properly credited on the back of the discs (in this case, ITV Studios is properly credited on the licensor) and, more to the point, their releases predated the US releases by MPI...

Night/Curse of the Demon (1957): UK or US Blu-ray?

Why are you saying Sinister are not a legit company? What exactly are you basing your statement on? They have released a lot of content that is available exclusively from them, including in HD, such as DONNA DEL LAGO, a genuine obscurity. And also, on a personal note, why all the ad hominen BS...

Night/Curse of the Demon (1957): UK or US Blu-ray?

The Italian Blu-ray of NIGHT OF THE DEMON that I have was released by Sinister Film, which as far as I am aware is a completely legit and reputable company.

    "The Alamo"s Status?

Love those recordings - however, GWTW was not the only album devoted to a single film score as KING'S ROW also got the solo treatment: http://www.amazon.com/Kings-Re-recording-Erich-Wolfgang-Korngold/dp/B000003TF5/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1419966046&sr=8-15&keywords=king%27s+row

    The Big Sleep (1978 version)

Mitchum is good casting but was much better in the role in Dick Richards' 1975 version of Farewell My Lovely. Michael Winner's film is very faithful to the book, much more so that Hawks ever was. On the whole though he doesn't really succeed in making it work on his own terms, and not just for...

    Aspect Ratio Documentation

This was a standard theatrical release (albeit based on the TV show of the same name) so would have been 1.85:1 - most home video releases, derived from VHS-era masters, have been open matte.

TCM/Sony: The Lady From Shanghai (Blu-ray/DVD combo)

For my money the best version currently available on DVD, in terms of PQ, is the anamorphic one out on DVD in Italy which also has the isolated score play from a separate menu.

It Happened One Night (1934) ?

It would be great to see "You'll Never Get Rich" (and "You Were Never Lovelier") make it to HD (even if it isn't a Capra movie).

I respect Bob's hard work in the area but, with regards to his use of the quote from the Roobarb forum about watching Quatermass in 4 x 3 (and no, I didn't make it, Alan Hayes did, and he is a very smart and knowledgeable man) I'd like to add my three pennies worth. I do think that the original...

In The Heat of the Night (1967) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

All the screengrabs I have seen for this one suggest that, as with the previous anniversary DVD release, the image has been been squeezed vertically making everyone look just a little wider than they should - it is certainly very clear when compared with the earlier DVD release.

TCM/Sony: The Lady From Shanghai (Blu-ray/DVD combo)

This is great news - Hopefully this will be based on the terrific restoration that premiered at the London Film Festival last year. Great to see that Eddie Muller has recorded a commentary but I hope this doesn't mean we are losing the Peter Bogdanovich extras created for the previous DVD release.

A Sneak Peek at The Agatha Christie Mystery Collection

We are destined to disagree about Nile - as I say, it looks pretty much the way I remember it. Also, but I recognise that this ia minority view, Mirror Crack'd is one I have great fondness for because it is uses the film-with-a-film-within-a-film structure to guy the genre. The 'Murder at...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Desk Set -- in Blu-ray

I personally think it looks much too blue in the Beaver caps, but I know what you mean about the comparison making it seem more marked. There do not appear to be any pure whites in any of the grabs and the reds are too muted it seems me.

A Sneak Peek at The Agatha Christie Mystery Collection

I have the Italian set - I agree that the colours are definitely a little bit off on Orient, which is a shame, as the encoding seems otherwise a fairly good one that copes well with Unsworth's celebrated use of fog filters. As for the titles, either they have been recreated digitially (ala...

Desk Set (1957) (Blu-Ray) Available for Preorder

DVD Beaver has posted some screengrabs from this release - if these are accurate, then I have to say that this looks like a genuine disappointment. I'll definitely be hanging on to my DVD.

Williams has quoted from Herrmann more than once but always very classily, as you'd expect. In STAR WARS for instance, when the Falcon arrives in the Death Star and Hans Solo and co emerge from the crawlspace, the music is a lift from PSYCHO - see here:

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ Ishtar -- in Blu-ray

I'm not averse to seeing this again because I can't remember anything other than the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joke.I saw this at the cinema when it came out with my (then) girlfriend - we went shopping afterwards and after a while looked at our watches and were shocked as we simply could not figure...

    Aspect Ratio Documentation

Hi John - yes, I was thinking of this because ABPC was part of Warners, as you point out. And absolutely, I take your point about the matting of the full aperture width - I merely meant that it was done in post-production. Anderson may have got mixed up but given that he was quoted on the matter...

Defitely in the 'for what it's worth' folder as I realise I am wading into this very late in the day, but with regards to Dam Busters it seems potentially hasty to refer to it as a 'Metroscope' production, for the simple reason that the film was released by Warners and not MGM and said...

Blu Rays of UNFORGIVEN (Huston), CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE ( Richardson) and BANDOLERO and BIG TR

As a signoff to this post, that last sentence really made me laugh. Yeah, because if it's recorded in Europe it must automatically be technically inferior, especially when playing a score by some red-bloded ... Russian. Although of course there's quite a lot of music by Mozart in the score - but...

    Coming Soon From Olive Films

Sadly the Region 2 version of YOUNG WINSON, whether from German or the UK, remains the shorter version (i.e. the one that ends on the freeze frame of the coin being flipped and not on the shot of the older Winston dreaming). This is apparently Attenborough's preferred cut from what I understand...
