sad though, considering James Baskett was awarded a special Oscar for his performance
and generations have missed out on one of Disney's best songs 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah' another Oscar winner for them (at least you can see that clip on youtube)
the only reason i got a copy of this film is that a friend loaned me her (bootleg, sorry) vhs tape and i burned a couple of dvdr's from it. the movie is really not that bad.....they need to release with a disclaimer.
i looked again at about an hour of this film on youtube last night. i can see that this was a very personal film for Mr. Stevens. he got very poetic about the piece, and on that level it does work. he needed a desert backdrop, and used the most beautiful location he could find. his Christ story...
i see TGSET as a -very slow- but stately meditation on the life of Christ. as has been mentioned, by comparison recent Jesus films and miniseries have just floundered in their attempts. i think it's tricky trying to evoke transcendent spiritual values visually, it can end up being only about...
