He liked it.
He's big on Marvel, so it was something quite different for him, but he engaged with the subject matter and enjoyed the story, and a little of the spectacle.
WOW!
Really quite lovely.
The fringing has gone from all of the worst areas which I'd noticed previously. Detail to burn (and I only saw a 2K projection).
I know the phrase 'looks like it was shot yesterday' is bandied around, and usually it's an overstatement. It would be too much to say...
What we’ve been waiting for (part 1). Details on the restoration process:

Some very rude people around (although we all knew that already).
Anyway, back to the film. I'm sorry that this is such late notice, but it looks like my colonial friends have beaten us Limeys to the punch.
You can get to see this first...but you'll have to be quick, as it's on tonight, or...
That's my understanding. Indeedd it's what happened with TRS and Blimp.
But don't you have to scan all 3 strips separately?
Any idea what's been done this time?
Many thanks.
Sorry that I'm having to repeat this, but I've just heard that this new restoration is a 4K scan of the version used for the DVD, and not a full, proper restoration re-aligning the 3-strip elements.
I desperately hope that this news is wrong, but it's from a reliable source.
I hope what I've just heard is wrong.
Someone at the PnP Appreciation Society (who is in regular touch with Thelma Scoonmaker, and has always been kept abreast of the previous restoration of TRS and Blimp) says it is NOT a new restoration, but a new scan "...of the same tired old negatives (or...
Gentlemen, this looks like the real deal.
The previous restoration by Grover Crisp was completely in the analogue domain, with the biggest problem being the misalignment of the 3-strip.
I can only presume that, if Sony have given it a 4k scan, they must surely have scanned the original 3 strip...
I'm completely at a loss, too.
Should I believe a bean-counter, or the world's foremost large format film preservation expert.
Look, I'll have to have a think about that one, and then I'll get back to you.

That's great news, in anyone's book.
When I look at what they've done so far, I just think 'boxed sets and collections'.
I think Warner have replaced all of my old UK Warner-Hitchcock DVDs with Blu-ray Disc, apart from Stage Fright, so I hope that's up soon.
They appear to be working their...
If anyone thinks there's no market for a 4k scan of Star Wars, all I can say is...

I simply don't believe The Honeymoon Killers has a larger following.
Disney could burn money spending 5 x what it really...
Fury (1936) / Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956) - A nice Lang two-fer
Key Largo/The Big Sleep (on their way already?)
The Set-Up / Gun Crazy (just finish releasing that DVD boxed-set's contents on Blu-ray)
Whose Life is it Anyway?
Bad Day at Black Rock
Seven Days in May
Wait Until Dark...
I think for me the answer is 'it depends'.
There are a few high profile titles out there still unreleased (The Big Sleep springs to mind, though this is coming), which I would imagine will be getting the full treatment. Some films, I suspect, aren't out yet simply because they need a lot of...
I've nothing against a move to digital in principle.
However, I have a couple of issues.
In the UK at least (not sue about the US) many of us have internet speeds too slow to stream. Even for those with speeds more than fast enough, there's the occasionally stutter and loss of service...
Amazon.fr.
Twice!
But, given Warner's recent work, this just feels like the real thing.
I hope so. Claire Trevor's rendition of Moanin' Low is one of the finest pieces of acting ever committed to celluloid.

It may or may not mean anything, but both The Big Sleep and Key Largo have appeared at Amazon.de (Germany) for pre-order on Blu-ray Disc, due February next year.

Sorry, I thought I'd made it clear in my original post.
He does like the Blu-ray, but didn't comment on whether it was squashed or otherwise.
If there is any squashing I'm sure it would be easy to miss. To repeat if there's no squashing then the DVD is stretched, and no one has commented on...
I'd certainly agree with that, as far as it goes.
As far as I'm aware (and I'm happy to be corrected) I don't think he's commented yet on the squashing (or otherwise).
It's easy to see how it might not be something one might immediately pick up on unless you're looking for it.
After all, I...
