Now that rumors are flying again, im quite excited. Im ready to watch TNG in HD. Does anyone know if its acurate that the special effects were completed on analog video ? I thought SD digital video would have been used, at least for the later seasons
I read a interview in Sound and Vision magazine years back where they did an interview with John Lowry. He was of the opinion that the special effects scenes were not really up to 4K standards due to analog compositing. The restoration interpositive introduces yet another generation loss...
I agree. Since the original trilogy was scanned at 1080 I, I would guess new transfers would have to be made. Or did I miss something and they already have been made ? I'm sure a new scan will deliver a better picture, but since the source is the 90's restoration done in analog, quality can only...
I don't think the cast as it stands now could make that work.. I had heard different. I thought it was Star Trek the search for more money. Maybe it will be ok, if they don't drink to much Budweiser in that engine room.
I will always think that bringing movies back to the big screen would help with loss of revenue. Say a movie like Cleopatra, or any movie. A limited release is not what I'm talking about. They should just try it and see.
For the first 6 original series films, I think the blue rays do look much better than my DVD's. I figure they were scanned from the original master. The improvement in picture can't be attributed to resolution alone, and they do say they are remastered. no matter what, they were gonna look...
I agree, but lets limit it to one layer if we can. It is distracting and i see no problem with recompositing special effect. Something like those scenes could never have been favored by anyone at the studio
I really hope they digittaly recomposite or clean up the grain with a system like what John Lowrey created. One that won't harm the image. It appears the original masters are worn out and Im wondering if they used OCN in creating them or if we have somthing to go back to for a real restoration...
No disrespect intended, but I do not favor the motion picture on blue ray. Those many layers of special effects are the problem. ( I think). If they have the OCN for everything imagine how grest that would look if recomposited
This may have been discussed in this thread so sorry if its a repeat.
I was not at all satisfied with my star trek blue ray set of the first six films. They say remastered meaning they came from the original master. What I don't know is did they slug in original camera negative into that...
I prefer tube HD. I did not bealive that blue ray players would upscale better. Thought it was hogwash created by a bunch of people more nitpicky than me. I was wrong.
I would like to know what steps are being taken to ensure that the digital data will be able to be played back in 50 years. Im all for preservation prints, but I would love to hear about some of the equipment used being preserved so we dont have to go back to analog.
I need to restore my family's 8mm footage. I'm looking at my movie transfer.com for scanning. They offer uncompressed 2K. Question 1 Should I even bother with a HD transfer 8mm elements. I should add that they have been mostly un played and in an attic in NC which has hot summers...
Thank you for your answers.
Still in the exhibition business after many years and I must agree with you on all statements. The digital conversion of the movie theatres is about to make a huge leap forward with many of the large, medium, and small circuits going 100% digital this year. 35mm...
I was inquiring because I had heard of going from 16k to film. Now I do think that sounds absurd, but 8k to film, I had hoped was possible. I actually do have to restore some 8mm film. While looking for facilities to scan it for me( I should be safe) I ran into that info.
AFAIK, 4k is...
Mr. Harris, Would the vista seps get the job done as well as 65mm seps would have. Is it possible to protect this film fully ? If a theatrical release were to happen I doubt I would even be able to get to a 4k theater much less 70mm. Proper archival is my concern. I fear if...
But would it not be better to restore from the best possible elements at 8k and produce prints from that. Safety elements and release alike. Is it possible to go form 8k to 65mm ?
Correct, and from a dupe negative. But I wouldn't hold my breath. If that occurred, I'd be very pleasantly...
Thank you for your info. I would love to see Ben Hur in 70mm, as well as the 10 comandments. There are a few movies that all should see on the big screen, and these two are someof them. I would also like to see LOA and spartacus in 70mm as well.
Im hoping for 8K as well bein this was shot in 65mm. As for aspect ratio to be honest im just not worried. I have the first issue of this film the flipper disc.It looks horrible. If I can just have a major improvement in picture clarity im going to be happy. If I had it my way the blue ray would...
I was in the wrong thread and thought we were talking about the ten commandments. Im reading up on both films as they make their way to blue ray. quite embarasing.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS was filmed in Vista Vision. Which is what I think Mr. Harris is referring too. But since Warner scanned A...
Butt I thought this was vista vision, 35mm spun horizontal through the camera. I thought Mr. Harris indicated 4k was quite fine for the format. If memory serves he corrected me in wanting 8k for vista vision. Im confused now
Can anyone give information on how this film has been restored. Did they scan the seps at 4k ? Is going to be the best that they can do ? I just cant wait to see it. Any info will be dearly appreciated. Thanks to all who have answered my questions since I have been following this forum. I have...
This is great news. What I don't understand is why all studios do not go back to the earliest possible elements for their blue rays. Now I understand expense is a factor, but for the great ones, nothing less should be tolerated.
There is a great deal there. there is just no way they threw anything away. Not star wars. Lost maybe, o neg to damaged to be used maybe. I seem to remember something about two ycm color seperation masters. Those would do fine
