What they did to the huge area in the Union Square store that used to have physical media (DVD, Blu-ray, and in the past CD) ? They just built a wall around the empty space !
I was waiting for Diabolik to get the 4K version of "PT" back in stock and place my order when I saw Criterion is putting it out. Even though it's slightly more (I'm determined to find it on sale) I'll wait for the Criterion
This needs to go straight to 4K Blu-ray , don't just leave at 1080
And bring "Doctor Zhivago" as long as well
In fact, WB probably has most of the films I really want to see on 4k but haven't been released as of yet ...
Just 3 or 4 years I ago I would see tons of "Sand Pebbles" Blu-rays in the $5.99 bin at Best Buy all the time (along with a whole slew of other Fox titles on Blu at that price point like "Gentlemen's Agreement" and a whole bunch of Marilyn Monroe films)...Kicking myself for not grabbing them...
I always hope for the same title to hopefully be released by Kino (or even Universal's own MOD program) , and that is "The Great Man" starring and directed by Jose Ferrer from 1957 (and made the NY Times 10 Best Films list that year)
And one more- a no brainer that I'm shocked hasn't been released on Blu-ray in America (considering that almost every other film by this director has come out on Blu)- and that's The Defiant Ones
I forgot to add two extra titles that I am shocked that Warner Archives have not released on Blu-ray (considering that both were nominated for numerous Academy Awards in back to back years- and both directed by a cinema master Fred Zinnemann )- The Nun's Story and The Sundowners
These are my most wanted titles on Blu-ray. Some have been on DVD, some never on any format
The Little Foxes
Dead End
The Bishops Wife
Hud
Catch 22
Carnal Knowledge
Paper Moon
Splendor in the Grass
America America
A Hatful of Rain
Advise and Consent
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore...
The 4K will probably emphasize, even more than the Blu-ray, how diffused and in soft focus are any of Cary Grant's close-ups. It's like they were filming Garbo or Crawford ! Garnted, he was about 55 at the time and his character was probably supposed to be in his late 30s
I'm STILL asking for Jose Ferrer's "The Great Man" from 1957 , and doesn't seem to have ever been released in any video format
It's a Universal title, so I hold out hope that Kino will put it out, Or Universal's own MOD program
I used to have great conversations with him whenever I ran into him in the (now defunct) Tower Records or J&R Music World
Loved his columns in Goldmine Magazine and the Village Voice
I know I'm in the minority on this, but I always found "Rio Bravo" to be highly overrated.
Now, if and when WB decides to upgrade "The Searchers" (and "The Wild Bunch") to 4k, count me in !!
A typo, but maybe there are no mistakes....
"Giant" on 4K has much of the film in a level of sharpness and clarity I have never seen before (I also saw the 1996 theatrical revival), with several bits that do not match the clarity of the rest of the film (for reasons that have been discussed on...
Totally agree here. I saw "The French Connection" when it opened in 1971, at age 10 . Not to get too political, but I think that scene did not offend, but actually confirmed what many in our community had experienced and believed.
As for Disney taking over the Fox library, I was saying when...
I think the reasoning is that they don't want to offend someone in the audience, which in turn they believe would reflect badly on the creators and owners of the work > In this case I'm just wondering who they think might be offended
I'm just curious as to wonder who they think they are "protecting" by editing out that it of dialogue ? I happen to be Black , and while I cannot speak for ALL of Black America, I think a significant amount of us believe that MANY cops of "Popeye" Doyle's background say and think things like...
"Giant" is one of my all time favorite films, and I had a copy in almost every home video format : VHS tape off of broadcast, manufactured VHS tape, Laser disc, DVD (Canadian import ), DVD (US release), Blu-ray...and now 4k Blur-ray, which I can say is clearly the very best of the bunch...
I'd be happy to at least have these episodes available on streaming. Peacock would probably be a perfect place
Interestingly, there were a few episodes hosted by Jools Holland when David Sanborn was unavailable. He then hosted a show in the UK "Later with Jools Holland" that pretty much...
