To me, Empire of the Sun is a surreal experience, and a pleasant one. Perhaps that "something missing" is the film's inability to connect with any certain reality, even within a fictional film world. The surrealist aspects give it a very off-kilter, emotionally disjointed feel.
Can't wait to...
I never saw this movie before watching the Blu-ray, and I thought it looked great. The new timing gives it a really creepy vibe.
However, last night I downloaded the VUDU HDX version (over 5 gigs) and sampled some of it on my PS3, planning to watch the whole thing soon, and I have to say I may...
The muted colors is actually the biggest reason I'm very hesitant to get this Blu-ray. I'll probably dole out for it eventually, but the brown veneer of the whole thing bugs me.
Still, I bought Deep Red on Blu-ray with its strong yellow look and was fine with that even though I wish it were...
Thanks for the info and image examples. The scene you described from Napoleon sounds downright fascinating, and I hope that receives a good HD restoration so that I can check it out.
Hey, everyone. I was hoping to get some answers here by people who know their stuff—especially those like Mr. Harris who know a lot about film history and are involved with it in some way. Having just watched a library copy of Kino's The General DVD (and right away upon finishing it, ordering...
It sounds like you know what you're talking about, based on David_AG's vouching for you, but you just haven't been very friendly or reasonable in any of these posts. It's hard to take seriously anyone who behaves like a pouting child. Behave differently and perhaps people will actually care to...
Great suggestions. Lovin' the Cinema Squid page. (Thanks, Squid; I regularly check your BD screenshots.) Is there a way to do a search at Cinema Squid to specifically see off-hand if RAH has done a review for a specific movie? I do usually just search on this board for "a few words about" plus...
Blu-ray is close to 2K, yeah. 2K is defined as 2048 x 1556 (though this varies; the constant resolution is 2,048 pixels wide), whereas HDTVs are 1920 x 1080. I'd imagine there would be a perceptible difference seen on a Blu-ray taken from a higher resolution master, but then, I could be...
Just means the film was scanned at 8K (8192x4320 resolution by definition—"8K" for roughly 8,000 horizontal pixels) but was cleaned up and restored in 6K. The theatrical showings are likely 4K. So the 4K showing and the Blu-ray would be sourced from the 6K master, with the 8K telecine existing...
Sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum to bring this up, so feel free to move if you like. I really enjoy reading Mr. Harris' Blu-ray reviews, but find it disheartening that there is no complete, up-to-date list of them. There used to be a regularly updated one here, but as you can see, it...
Picked up the Walmart set also. I was not happy about this movie being a gift set only release, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a regular case two-disc edition with just the movie. Had the 1925 silent film been in HD, I would have gone for the gift set.
Now if only Citizen Kane would get a...
A $30 limited release is a drag, but hell, I'll fork over the money. Maybe all 3,000 copies will sell out quick and Sony will do a wider release themselves. Maybe. One can only hope?
I hope this is the end all, be all home video version of this flick. I own it twice already (German and US DVDs—the former has a REAL cool VHS-esque bubble case) but there's definitely room for improvement—not just with the video but, as mentioned, the sound as well. The English audio on the US...
(Sorry to revive this thread, but...) How does the Blu-ray for the 1923 film look, and does it feature a good musical score? I'm debating on whether or not to buy the standard Blu-ray release or the gigantic gift set for the sake of having the B&W film in high definition. If the transfer is not...
Thanks for your input on the US BD, Mr. Harris. I've been on the fence about whether to buy this, not really trusting the big review sites, and now I know it's a must-buy. And for ten bucks, that's a steal for one of the greatest films ever made.
So there's no additional censorship? An Amazon customer reviewer (how can one review something they haven't yet seen?) states that Disney "digitally removed the Black Centaurs (Both the two Zebra-Centaurs and the Maid Centaur)," and I did kind of a double-take: "What? Where are you getting...
What do you mean? I know it's had some really ugly Blu-ray releases thus far, but Blue Underground didn't lose the rights to it, did they? I've been waiting in anticipation for their take on a Blu-ray release. Anyway, three Argento flicks and two Fulci on Blu next year from BU. Sounds good...
Good to hear 8 1/2 on Blu-ray gets the Robert Harris approval. I just found out it was released this week, and instantly came to this board to seek your opinion. Thank you. A definite buy for me.
Good to hear it's received a solid transfer. I was certain it would look great, given BU's previous BD releases. Here's hoping for more Fulci, more Argento...more of all that good stuff, on Blu-ray from Blue Underground!
Good news. One of my favorite horror movies, and I'm glad to see a lot of these classics get great hi-def transfers. It's just too bad Coil got cold feet and didn't want their music featured in the final film. The stuff they did is way more eerie than what's in there.
I've never seen this movie nor know much about it, but I'm willing to support a smaller company with high-quality releases. I've always liked Blue Underground's catalog, though not so much their DVD transfers. My only beef with their BDs--or at least in the case of Stendhal Syndrome and...
This really is a shame. AHOV is such a fantastic movie, and I was greatly looking forward to having it on Blu-ray. From the screencaps I've seen--low-res they are, but still giving a decent idea of what the image quality is like--it really does look like detail was eliminated along with the...
This is the thread in question showing the comparison shots between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The HD DVD shots are clearly more detailed, although whether this was the original intent of the filmmakers, I don't know; perhaps the BD more accurately represents the original look. But to my eyes...
I hope reviving month-and-a-half-old threads isn't a no-no around here. I've been eying Xylon's screencaps over at AVS Forum, and I gotta say the BD transfer is bumming me out. Looks kind of poor compared to the HD DVD. It's still a pretty nice, crisp transfer, but the grain scrubbing really...
On the screencaps I've seen (DVD Beaver, DVD Talk), the grain looks like a digital mess. Lots of blemishes and I think what would be considered macroblocking. (I'm not really familiar with tech jargon.) I assume this is due to the lower bitrate. If they had encoded the video at a higher bitrate...
