A Few Words About A few words about...™ Red Tails & The Tuskegee Airmen -- in Blu-ray

We watched Red Tails last night. I agree that it is based loosely on the real guys, but it just might make people curious to learn more about what they really accomplished. That said, I enjoyed the movie and I really liked the 'look' that was created. The presentation has a warmth and quality...

    Carl Fink on Physics

If I want to know how something works, I ask someone who studies that topic as a profession. Asking a mathematician for answers about organic systems makes about as much sense as asking a biologist to explain quantum physics.

A Few Words About While we wait for A few words about...™ Lawrence of Arabia -- in 4k/UHD Blu-ray

I can't speak for any studio at this point, but in my past experience, they are certainly concerned about getting good pictures out there, that said, I'm confused by your statement. If you went to the theater 10 or even 5 years ago and a film had been in release for a few weeks, you would often...

It's understandable that on the face of it, you would think that you can't quadruple the encoded picture size without a proportional increase in average and peak data rate. In practice though, we are not encoding double the vertical and horizontal frequency, so the actual like for like bit rate...

A Few Words About While we wait for A few words about...™ Lawrence of Arabia -- in 4k/UHD Blu-ray

My earlier point was that BD50 should be suitable for 4k with some considerations. a 100GB disc would be convenient for added value, but in my opinion, the economics don't justify the capital expense. It's not my place to discuss Penton. I'm sorry to see that went badly for him and others...

Thanks for the comments welcoming me back after a long hiatus. The company that I worked for until recently, like many companies, does not approve of participating in these types of forums because of the problems it often creates. That said, I no longer work for that company and until I...

A Few Words About While we wait for A few words about...™ Lawrence of Arabia -- in 4k/UHD Blu-ray

It's possible, and there may be some trickle down benefit, but it represents an incompatible signal format that would have to be converted for legacy displays. From a content company marketing point of view, a total package with multiple improvements needs to be created. Think about a signal...

A Few Words About While we wait for A few words about...™ Lawrence of Arabia -- in 4k/UHD Blu-ray

I think 4k can benefit both, again, not from a pure resolution play, but because it can fix other pervasive shortcomings.

Blu-ray can work and it is the most economical way to deliver high bitrate individual content (as opposed to broadcast). The investment in Blu-ray manufacturing is huge, it does not seem feasible to retool for a higher capacity ROM.

Hi Robert, Let me start by saying I have corporate agenda for 4k but... I have did do some work on this previously and particularly from a filmmaker point of view, there are clear potential benefits. It is important not to get fixated on pixel count alone and consider other benefits that any...

I am happy to participate on the forum, but please excuse my delayed responses... In answer to your question, all the possibilities you mention happen. It depends on the deal and when the deal is made. This is at least in part why some titles look exceptional and others just so-so. Lately...

We generally try to include the original mix for Blu-ray whether it is mono, stereo or what have you. We can do the same for Tommy.

Making Blu-ray discs is a many step process, but the key steps are film transfer/digital intermediate to create and HD master, compression for audio and video, authoring including menu artwork, and replication. There is no "re-format" going on. If the only video master of a film is standard...

I'll see if I can find out the basis for the added value decisions on BHD. If the seamless branched titles, Spiderman 2 and Close Encounters are well received, we may try to use that feature more for those titles that have multiple versions. It will take a fair bit of research to find out why...

I think you will see more of the classic titles in late 08' or 09'. Remember that we are still selling to early adopters and when these customers browse the shelf at retail shops, they want to see the new hits. Blu-ray is still earning its retail shelf space, so there is only so much room for...
