    Worst Movies Ever Made?

Three films I paid money to see and actually felt angry about the experience: Independence Day (1996) What Dreams May Come (1998) Vanilla Sky (2001) All just hateful. Of course, YMMV.

    Houdini (1953)---comments?

Just watched this over the weekend; last time I remember seeing the movie was on a black and white TV (think it was NBC Saturday Night at the Movies, or something) so it was wonderful to finally see it in color! However, compared with some other DVDs of 1950s films (War of the Worlds, This...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ El Cid

Compared to Robert Harris, I'm J6P. But, IMHO, I thought El Cid was a beautiful transfer, at least in comparison to most of my other 2:35 DVDs. Rich colors, almost zero grain, good detail, edge enhancement not noticeable on my 46" screen, fed by my Toshiba HD-A30.

EL CID (2 disc) release date: 1/29

The library where I work often gets DVDs in advance of street date and I was fortunate enough to get a look at El Cid last night......a simply beautiful transfer. Rich, deep color, nice detail, almost zero grain. Sometimes looked like HD. Can't wait to purchase a copy!

Irwin Allens THE LOST WORLD plus...

Cheese it may be, but one of the best popcorn-eating-in-front-of-the-TV memories of my childhood! Can't wait to dispose of my old VHS copy. "And if you're real lucky, the fire god will be asleep!" "Gomez, the diamonds!" "My helicopter!" and best of all, "Live Dinosaurs!" (I didn't care that they...

The Secret of Nimh: Family Fun Edition comparison

I dunno, I was actually disappointed in the transfer quality when I watched it last night; more graininess and "dirt" than I expected. However, some sequences here and there were pristine, and it made me wish the whole film looked as good. I watched the widescreen version though; maybe the 4:3...

    Cornel Wilde's THE NAKED PREY

I liked this film so much after seeing it in a theater as a kid, I bought the comic book of the movie! Gotta love that ending when the two main antagonists salute each other. Of course, the comic is long gone; so is my taped from AMC copy. Can't wait for the DVD!

    Kathleen Byron on DVD

Thanks a million, I'll be snatching up that set!

    Kathleen Byron on DVD

I've had a major crush on Kathleen Byron (now in her 80s) since I first saw her as the "mad nun" Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus (the French R2 DVD from 2006 is just wonderful). The only other DVD I own with her in a major role is The Small Back Room (1949), but I also appreciate her smaller...

    April Love (1957)

    Excellent box set idea!

    April Love (1957)

Corny as heck (how about that "You got to do do do it yourself" number in the big cookout scene?) but one of my favorite "semi-musicals". Love the Kentucky scenery and Shirley Jones :) Pat Boone sings pretty well too. Being that the title song was such a big hit I'm surprised this still hasn't...

    The Lost World (1960)

One of my all-time popcorn favs on TV as a kid. Almost never seen now. Any word at all on a DVD release? I do have a VHS release of the film, but besides the obvious picture quality issues, about the last 2 minutes are inexplicably cut (just before Challenger reveals the hatching dino egg)...

    Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)

You guys are right; after seeing the film in the theater I did see it on TV once when I was "older", and that artificially extended version must be what I am remembering. I still miss, though, Maish repeating Mountain's line as he stands in the alley: "I'm in Pittsburgh, and it's raining." :)...

    Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)

I purchased the Sony 2002 R-1 DVD release of this classic film, which I was lucky enough to see in a theater when I was a kid (even at 8 years old, it made a huge impression on me). Although the picture quality of the DVD is generally superb, I was surprised to discover that some footage from...

    The Plague Dogs

IMHO, Adams' original ending rang more true to me than the one in the movie. In a short dialog with the reader, Adams states how easy and predictable it would now be for him to end the story tragically. By choosing instead a "happy ending", he is deliberately trying to show that life can in fact...

    The Plague Dogs

What I really didn't appreciate about this otherwise impressive film was how it betrayed the original Richard Adams novel by messing with the book's actual ending. The author concluded with a powerful and joyous affirmation that, despite all odds, happy endings occasionally DO happen in this...
