what is the differences between a av reciver and a pre amp processor? does a decent reciever give the same performance as a pre pro and an amp?

Hi, Im looking at adding a multichannel amp to my HT. After going through a couple of manuals im realy confused about what inputs they have, they say single ended RCA or XLR. I cant find anything relivent on google. Any info appreciated. Sorry for another newbie question. Thanks in advance...
