You are wrong about this; the 720 handles multichannel PCM received over HDMI. Also, if you "dont need a receiver that can decode True HD" why are you looking at "the Harman Kardon 254, the Onkyo 606, or the Marantz 4003" since IIRC all of them can? Makes no sense.
Apparently not only are you overly sensitive but also lacking any semblance of a sense of humor. I'm through now...but please feel free to take a parting shot with another of your stunning ripostes.
Can you say "overly sensitive"? Apparently the inclusion of a :D to mean "just kidding" isn't specific enough for some and warrants a personal attack. Grow up, pal .
...and at this time of year, an Onkyo can help reduce your heating costs. Ok, ok, calm down all Onkyo fan boys. :D BTW most, if not all, manufacturers overrate their specs.
In case you didn't get one you can download the DG600 manual here: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/STRDG600_operation.pdf Also, a quick look shows that your receiver has component video inputs/output as well as s-video and composite I/O. You didn't say if your TV and any of your sources have...
Double check your PS3 and 5400 set-up in their respective menus. Also you might post your issue over at AVS Forum. There are a couple of STR-DAx400ES threads in the Receiver forum over there. As for waiting until you get a "better receiver", that's just plain BS.
If you compare the specs, the 5.1 example above using Polk R150/CSR speakers with the Cadence CSX-12 or BIC H-100 subwoofer should provide much better performance than the Energy Take 5.1 speaker set. For example, the Polks get lower (65Hz vs 110 Hz) and there's just no way that a 20 pound 8"...

AFAIK the 663 passes nothing through unless it's powered on. If you want to watch TV without the 663, you'll need to connect the SAT audio and video directly to the TV...and make sure the TV's speakers aren't muted.
If you haven't pulled the trigger already, you may want to take a look at the 606 thread over on AVS (The Onkyo TX-SR606 Owners Thread - AVS Forum. The 606 reportedly has issues with heat, humming/buzzing audio, playing nice with the PS3, etc. Now all receivers have their own particular set of...
The 506 is "HDMI pass through" which means that it doesn't play audio received over an HDMI cable - a separate digital audio cable (optical or coax) is required from each HDMI source to the receiver. Because of this, you can't play lossless HD audio (TrueHD or DTS-MA decoded to PCM by the PS3)...
You may also want to look at the Sony HT-7200DH. It's 5.1, powered sub, 3 HDMI inputs, stand-alone upscaling DVD player, audio over HDMI including lossless from Blu-ray if player decodes, etc. Can be had for ~$400 @ B&H.
I'm currently using a Samsung DVD-VR330 VCR/DVD recorder combo. IMO it's about as simple to use as it gets. It's not a current model but it's still available. Review of Samsung DVD-VR330 DVD recorder & HiFi VCR Samsung DVD-VR330 DVD/VCR Combined Recorder on Sale at Taaffe Photo

Since the above comment is simply one person's opinion, here's another one. The Sony HT-7200DH 5.1 system includes a receiver that actually handles audio over HDMI (including multichannel PCM decoded by a Blu-ray player). Like I said, JMO :D
Voice matching is not important for rear surrounds. Re. Polk R150s, I run a 5.1 set up that uses them for front L & R and surround L & R. I drive them with a Sony STR-DG1000. I'm very happy with the SQ of R150s.
DVD players only do upscaling (what you're calling upconverting) via HDMI. OTOH, your TV will automatically upscale the video from the DVD player to the TV's native resolution. For example, if the DVD player sends a 480 signal to a TV with a 720 native resolution, the TV automatically scales the...

I appreciate it but no need to take my word for it. From page 21 of the STR-DG720 manual: "You can enjoy multi channel Linear PCM only with an HDMI connection."
