    Screen Paint Color

I used 1/4" hardboard and crown molding to make my screen. It's 110". I did have to cut the last foot or so off the 4x8 sheet and add it to the bottom to make something more like 5x7" (I don't remember the measurements exactly ... can get it if you need). Used bondo to make that joint smooth and...

    Quieting my projector

Infocus X1. I'm not aware of any other mode that might be available. It's the fan that I hear. As I said, it's pretty good with most sides covered but during quieter scenes the projector noise is noticable. I've done pretty good getting all the other noises to go away with sound deadening...

Acoustic - is sound dampening neccessary?

You can also put rugs over the tile and build inexpensive wall mounted sound absorption panels out of 1x4 boards and fiberglass (better is rockwool) with some open-style cloth cover. Burlap is ugly but there are other good choices. If you are creative you can also make it look somewhat artistic...

Can someone suggest what kind of speaker stands???

Display pedestals for art work are cool. You can get somewhat inexpensive plaster ones and paint them to match your decor. Check Michael's. If they are hollow, fill them with sand in the bottom to make sure they are stable.

    Hiding wires but lateral studs?

Those horizontal studs are unusual in newer construction. I'd be sure what they are there for before drilling into them. But, it's true that a hole to run wires through doesn't substantially weaken a 2x4, and I would think especially not for a horizontal one because it wouldn't be bearing any...

My hanging DVR... and TV I guess

I think a wall mounted shelf could work. All the wiring would go to the DVR (through a simple plastic conduit for a clean look) and just an HDMI and powercable (zip tied together) would go from the DVR to the TV. Most DVRs have a power outlet on the back to plug the TV in. Leave a little slack...

    Quieting my projector

I have my projector enclosed in a box with only the front open for ventilation. It contains most of the noise but I'm looking for an improvement. I'm thinking of putting a glass cover on the front and running some sort of vents in and out of the box. I've got plenty of room around the ceiling...

    Your All-time favorite song

Hell is for Children - Pat Benatar. I had a fine upbringing, but I can really feel the emotion of that song. I heard her say she sings it every night they play. The song has more impact when you first hear Suffer the Little Children about an actual event that inspired Pat to write it.

    Magazine recommendation?

I'm thinking about getting a magazine subscription but can't decide which one. I'm more interesting in audio than video and I like to learn about building rooms and shots of them decorated (to steal ideas). I'd be more interested in projector reviews than CRT/LCD/plasma. Audio equipment reviews...

    solder causing oxidation?

I purchased banana plugs from Monoprice because I read they could be used either as screw-on or solder-on. First, I don't see how anyone is able to get them to work as screw-on because the internal collar where you fold over the wires does not seat into the "cap". When I did this the wire didn't...

    Gas Fireplaces

I don't know of any cons. Flip the lightswicth and it comes on. No mess, simple, warms the room. Works for me!

    Same front and rear speakers??

I spent some time tweaking the system today. I discovered that my rear speakers had dipole/bipole switches that were not identical - they were symmetric. By that I mean to set dipole on both required one switch pushed to the left and the other to the right. I also had the left and right speakers...

    Same front and rear speakers??

I currently have Boston Acoustics T830 towers for my fronts (and a VRC center channel) but have small multipole speakers (Cambridge Soundworks "The Surround II") for the rears. I've played around with the rear levels but they don't seem to be loud enough. I plan to get a SPL meter and set...

Options for subfloor in basement with low ceiling?

I used the Drycore squares in my Michigan basement and really like the results. They get you up off the concrete so the room feels more like a regular room and not a basement. My old house had carpet/thick pad on concrete and it was always colder when you walked without shoes. And, while it...
