Anyone Else Finding SD-DVD lacking after life with HD DVD/Blu-ray?

A lot of us are interested in HD but are staying content with SD until the format war is ironed out. I'd hate to be one of you guys that has limited their viewing habits to only HD material. To me that signifies that you're more interested in the technology than the movies.

Walmart orders 2 million $299 HD DVD players, in stores soon!

Sony tends to screw up their proprietary formats. In the case of Blu-ray they chose chose to saddle the PS3 with it which in turn made it too expensive for the average video game buyer. Blu-ray also as a descriptive title doesn't exactly say what the product is or does. From a business stand...

    Letters From Iwo Jima

Sounds like you didn't get into the film Gabriel. That's too bad. Overall I thought it was exceptional. I can accept some of the revisionist elements because the film was about much more than war but how it effects our convictions as humans. The cinematography fit the plot and tone of the film...

Phantom Menace is OUT (part 2)

Are you making excuses for Lucasfilm? There's no excuse for them not to fix technical problems if they're going to re-release the movies. To say that they are using the same exact discs is to say that Lucasfilm is lazy and cheap--which they are.

    Epic Movie (merged)

Looks like crap. I'm surprised anyone on these boards would actually want to see it.

    Rocky Balboa recap (SPOILERS)

I have to say with all of the raves it's receiving I was let down. I found much of the film to feel choppy and after the fight is set we're rushed to the finish (even Rocky makes a quick exit from the ring) leaving lots of character developement on the cutting room floor. It's an engaging...

    Superman 4 - What's so bad?

Or the kid will just fade into the background, perpetually playing upstairs in their room--or better yet send him off to boarding school. In a way the kid has de-sexualized Superman. There's just no chemistry anymore between Lois and Superman--not that the two actors who are now portraying...

    Superman 4 - What's so bad?

I agree that there's a good comic book movie buried in Superman 3. People laud Superman Returns as a "return" to what made the originals film so good and some of it works but as a whole Superman Returns just isn't very fun to watch. I also hate that there's now a kid attached to the whole...

    Superman 4 - What's so bad?

It's a nonsensical scene that happens when Pryor is hacking into a computer mainframe creating all sorts of chaos. It's actually an amusing scene taken in the context of when the film was made. Back then your average person only had a rudimentary knowledge of computers so as a farce it works...

    Superman 4 - What's so bad?

Probably since the name Golan/Globas was attached to the production. I actually read the novelization back when I was a kid. Having two Nuclear Men was totally redundant but if I remember correctly at least with the first one him and Supes had a street brawl. Anyway you cut it I don't think the...

    Superman 4 - What's so bad?

Well it couldn't have been any worse than drumming up another Luthor-Land Swindle. Truth is that nuclear power isn't a bad thing when it's used properly. Doesn't Superman finish off Nuclear Man by dropping him into a reactor?

Am I completely crazy? Sell my McIntosh...

Unless the McIntosh gear needs refurbishing I would hang onto it. HT receivers and TV's are disposable nowadays but McIntosh gear isn't. However I'm not saying that if you needed the money for say a house down payment that I wouldn't sell it--truth is that vintage McIntosh gear is over priced...

With CD sales still in a slump, will the industry give DVD-A or SACD a second chance?

I just wanted to add that I think the future of high-rez is on the PC audio side. I own a Squeezebox and a ripped CD at lossless quality sounds pretty good. Of course you're still at the mercy of the mastering which in the case of CD usually means compressed and in your face. Now the studios...

With CD sales still in a slump, will the industry give DVD-A or SACD a second chance?

SACD and DVD-A came out about ten years too late. By this time most audiophiles had invested too heavily in expensive CD players and vinyl rigs to re-invest in a new format. For regular consumers most who even bothered to sample a high-rez format were probably left underwhelmed. Reason being...

Should I worry that I may be collecting a dead format?

Here's my take on the format war: Sony will botch it up per usual. Sure the studios are jumping on the Blu-ray wagon but will the consumers do so? The PS3 is looking more and more like a lame duck and unless players fall below the magic $200 price point... What might end up happening is that...

Should I worry that I may be collecting a dead format?

I think this is somewhat of an old arguement taken from the VHS/Beta days. I don't have any stats to back it up but I speculate that the porn industry has gone mostly to the internet. Gone are the days of sneaking behind a curtain into the 'Adult XXX' section at your local Mom & Pop video rental...
