I don't think I've been all that repetitive, frankly--except perhaps in my frequent assertions that I won't be buying any of these... when I've rejoined the conversation, it has been to add to a cogent point made by someone else, or to nip an emergent straw-man-style rebuttal (i.e. if I'm not...
I don't see the spit in my remarks--I don't bear Feltenstein et al any personal animus... but I also don't see where that ought to come into the matter... With this initiative (at least with regard to the studio age titles) Warner is stepping into the boots of the bootleggers... that's the...
as a fellow wallower in the swamps of ebay, I concur--the idea that businesses do anything to be "nice" just doesn't take any account of the way these decisions are made... this is a cash-grab, pure and simple--no different at all from what bootleggers are doing, except that Warner has the...
agreed--I don't have a big TV (I watch everything on a 21 inch computer screen), but I have friends that do, and when I try to convince them that Three Comrades is a great movie, I don't want them focusing on how out of focus the thing looks on their mega screens...
the bottom line is this (and...
I'm with you all the way on this Charles (even if I'm NOT with Warner on their print on demand strategy)--these movies ought to be available for everyone to see (particularly the ones that belong to studios that are not part of the TCM package)...
I don't make a lot of money, but give every...
you pay for things in your dreams?
in mine, the socialist revolution has come, and these films have become the property of the people, as they always should have been!
in real life, I have paid far more than $20 for similar titles on Ebay (on similarly shoddy DVDs), but I'm not going to do it...
I am psyched about films being available too David--but the thing is, they're ALREADY available as DV-recordings... (although many Fox, Universal, Paramount, Columbia films from the 1930s and 1940s are not... that's why I'd be tempted to buy them, despite my objection to this entire line of...
I should add that I'm objecting as strenuously as I am because I don't want to see the other studios follow suit in this folly
(although, sadly, I must admit that I'd be a lot more tempted by Universal, Columbia and Fox offerings of this sort, because a lot of those films, which also include...
oh but there's another (better, and, sadly, just as unlikely) way around this--and that's for people not to buy this stuff at all... and either record the movies off of TCM--or ask a friend with access to the channel to do it for them (that's what I do)
I'm at least as rabid an aficionado of...
this sums up how I feel about the whole program--I'm totally willing to hand over every cent I can spare to Warner, Criterion, Fox, Columbia, Universal, etc in order to encourage them to mass-produce these DVDs in a format that is up to snuff (and preferably with interesting/entertaining...
fair enough--that's what I would have expected...
and that's how it worked when I took TCM up on the RKO Classics from the Vault thing last year--which was pretty expensive in itself, but featured extraordinarily rare items that I wanted to encourage the studio to make available
this new...
I didn't bother to find out information about shipping to Canada (although initial reports did say they would only ship to US addresses--sorry if I expect press releases to give correct information) because I don't think this is a good deal, for anyone who has access to TCM.
I've never heard more disheartening "good news" in my life.
Is there any reason for people to buy these $20 US-no-extras DVD-Rs instead of just recording 'em off TCM?
no
there is not
not that my opinion matters to Warners anyway, since I'm Canadian
I hope Fox is nowhere near done with its classics! A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is definitely the most glaring omission, but more Grable, Faye and Power (I'm particularly eager to see YOU CAN'T HAVE EVERTHING; SALLY, IRENE AND MARY; TIN PAN ALLEY; FOOTLIGHT SERENADE; CONEY ISLAND; THE SHOCKING...
looks pretty good--and there's definitely enough on there to convince me that I ought to "double-dip" for this one (I originally bought the entire DeMille set just for the Stanwyck Union Pacific--but I wound up liking all of the Colbert vehicles quite a lot--despite the insane and problematic...
yes--I'm amazed and thrilled. they're sitting on a goldmine at Universal, because (unlike Fox, RKO, Warner and MGM films) these titles DO NOT show on any specialty networks that I know of--I hope they open the floodgates this year (and bring back the actor/actress 5-packs!!)
I wasn't expecting them to look much better than PD releases when I bought them, but they actually have really nice transfers! no extras, but very affordable--I really wish they'd come out with more of these!
GREAT list! I'm particularly pleased to find Daughters Courageous on there (Michael Curtiz is reputed to have considered it his most underrated film--and I quite agree!)--it's not on DVD though, is it? (I only ask because I WISH it was!!!)
I could probably type for hours, if I let myself, but I'll try to restrict myself to a few items per studio: Warners: Yolanda and the Thief Two Girls and a Sailor The Firefly (a real gem!) ALL unreleased Eleanor Powell films the entire Andy Hardy series Juarez The Last...
very cool! Sternberg's Crime and Punishment is a real favorite of mine! I wonder if WHV will follow suit with Lorre set of their own (with Three Strangers and The Verdict at the top of the list)? They certainly should! p.s. someday, I hope that ALL of Sternberg's films are available!
Peter Lorre set????????? when's that coming out? that's exciting! I, too am disappointed by Universal's weird failure to exploit their noir catalog--and also by the apparent discontinuation of their wonderful 5/6 movie "glamor"/"legend" star-based collections (I wound up getting all of them...
agreed! from a viewer's perspective, it's even more important to get these on home video than anything Warner does, because none of them ever play on TCM
I'm excited about these! (although, of course, everyone has their favorites that they'd like to see included--I'm especially rarin' to see more early Harlow and Cagney things--especially Red Dust, Bombshell, Blonde Crazy and Taxi!--but I suppose those can be promoted some other way... right?)...
oh my!
I just ordered it!
No Christmas presents for anyone (except the pleasure of coming to my house to watch these wonderful films)
I really really hope this paves the way for more Borzage releases--even WITH this wonderful set, he's the most under-represented great Studio Age director...
