Oddly, there was about a minute that was in the PBS broadcast that is NOT on the blu-ray! (spoiler)
For those who saw the broadcast, there was a small snippet that happened after the singing of "If You Were the Only Girl in the World".
Now, this is NOT on the UK blu or dvd. Sad and...
My "holy grail" would be a series that aired years ago on Mystery! called Game, Set, and Match. It was written by Len Deighton, and my understanding is that he was seriously unhappy with the casting of Ian Holm in the lead role, and has refused to let it air again, much less to allow it to come...
I haven't gotten a notice yet, either.
I have the streaming + 1 Blu-ray @ a time option currently. It doesn't work for me, because Netflix is never in a hurry to get new catalog releases in blu, which I use to help me make a decision re: purchase. I guess what I will do in September is...
One thing is for sure. When the new special features come out in the hoped for and often discussed "Ultimate Box Set", the reasoning behind the new color grading will be one of the most watched features on the set!
Yes, but Sean I refuse to have a 720p picture when this is supposed to be 1080p. Criterion just needs to redo this disc, period. After what I saw on the netflixed disc, I won't be buying this one until I hear the problem is fixed. It's too bad, as I love it as much as you do.
Yes. There was a hollering of Hobbit fans worldwide at this video. It is awesome.

Thanks for an awesome presentation, Rich. Unfortunately, I purchased Up,Down ages ago, with, blast it, no commentaries, et al. It's too costly to repurchase, given as how there is no picture quality upgrade. But thanks for mentioning that Thomas and Sarah has had such a drastic price...
A very definite day one purchase for me. I am not pre-ordering because I don't want to pay the price for day -of -release delivery--I'll hit the local Walmart. I hope I don't get burned and have to pay a higher price there, but I've waited so long for this release that at that point it won't...
Lord of the Rings EE Fanny and Alexander Barry Lyndon Brideshead Revisited (Jeremy Irons version) Mary Poppins The Lion in Winter (Peter O'Toole version) Ryan's Daughter Tess of the D'urbervilles (Roman Polanski version) Local Hero Far from the Madding Crowd (Hey, I like my...
I agree, dpippel. I've kept hope alive that these films would be made although they've been thwarted from Bob Shaye's problems with PJ due to the lawsuit, through MGM's woes, through del Toro's departure (so glad it encouraged PJ to just step in the director's chair) etc. ad nauseum. Now, for...
Fanny and Alexander Barry Lyndon Tess Brideshead Revisited (Jeremy Irons). I'd love it to look as good as Pride and Prejudice. (oh well, a gal can dream, can't she?)
I'm beginning to wonder if my next Blu-ray player shouldn't be an Oppo. I have an Oppo DVD player and it upconverts beautifully as well as plays region 2 discs. Does this Oppo BD player play region 2? I'd be curious to know if anyone with this player has witnessed the Howards End bug, or if...
*Laughs*. That looks familiar. And that horrible bit where Mrs. Wilcox is walking around her house (at the very beginning of the movie--piano solo still playing). It's been some time ago since I netflixed the disc, but I remember thinking that maybe the blu-ray producers had decided to give...
Well, if research is ever done on this, I'm letting it be known that I have a S550 that has been firmware updated, with all updates available thus far. The disc was unwatchable on this. I love Howard's End, but I'll content myself with the upconverted DVD rather than put myself through any...
Sean, I have a Sony, too. Maybe it's a Sony player problem? Did you check if any of the other folks on Amazon who saw this bunk picture are running Sony machines?
Marsnkc, you wouldn't have missed the problems on this disc if you had watched it on a monitor that is sensitive to them. They are unmissable. Take a look at Robert Harris' answer to Sean, which he posted after watching it on several monitors. He did see the problems on one of the...
Sean..
I am throwing up my hands. How NO OTHER DISC could look this bad is beyond me. From now on, I will always netflix my discs first. I had actually pre-ordered HE first and had canceled the purchase (I was going through a phase where I was trying to discipline myself to save money--hah!)...
Sean--I've posted to you on Amazon re: our problems with this disc. At Jon Mulvaney's direction I took my sharpness down, although I never had the set on vivid. It still looks just horrible, and as I said on Amazon if you pause it, it looks like someone spilled whiteout on it and tried to rub...
1. Lord of the Rings EE
2. Fanny and Alexander
3. Barry Lyndon
I should put "Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe" on here because my sister and my husband both want this so much. Yeah, that'll happen.
I'd be curious to know how many folks WHO HAVE READ THE BOOKS are satisfied with the TE. For myself, I want the EE because of seeing the extra stuff that WAS in the books. I admit the drinking game and the mountain of skulls and scenes of other superfluous junk I could do without. But seeing...
I am in a quandary here. I had every intention of passing on the purchase of this set but renting it and waiting for the EE, as many are doing. But I really want the special features this set is advertising if they are also in high def. i particularly liked the "Quest for the Ring", and, huge...
Ron, I see it has gone back to $19.99 today, although I do assure that it had gone to $23 and change. Why it would go back and forth I don't know, but that is, I guess an alert that one must be mindful that that site does sometimes do that pricing "thing." Glad you slipped in there and were...
