If they used the Blackhawk prints because they were the only surviving uncut prints, then why did they use the cut version of WASHEE IRONEE and BEAR SHOOTERS? I'm just wondering, not disputing anything. There seems to be wild inconsistencies on this set. You get several beautifully-restored...
I agree. I just can't get through these fast enough. As I go through them I am amazed how they've been cleaned up. It looks like they've gone through them and digitally elminated dirt. That may be why in some places it looks like things are moving around. Although, it is sad that some cuts have...
Another one that is mean is A LAD AND A LAMP where Spanky wishes Cotton (Stymie's baby brother) was a monkey. Stymie says, "Don't do that. You don't have to sleep with him!" At the end, Cotton and Spanky have pot bellies because they've eaten so much. Spanky belly-bumps Cotton and knocks him...
Can anyone describe exactly what words were cut from BEAR SHOOTERS and WASHEE IRONEE? Was it dialogue considered inappropriate for censor reasons or was it just lost?
Unfortunately, THE KID FROM BORNEO is a Blackhawk print. It looks pretty good, but tragically the sound is so distorted it sounds like everyone is GARGLING! from beginning to end. It does not sound this bad on ANY previous version. MUSH AND MILK right after it is an MGM print and looks and...
Wow, FISH HOOKY looks great! Some of these prints look like they have been cleaned and restored long the lines of Warner Bros. work on NORTH BY NORTHWEST. I think this may be one of my favorites. Spanky's line at the end is the best tag of any Little Rascals' short: Aw, go ahead and kiss her so...
Every film on Disc Three seems to be flawless and beautiful. Wow. They are all MGM and in sych. There's a little wabbling of images, but that is probably because of over-compression artifacts. But they are beautifully restored. Especially HOOK AND LADDER and THE POOCH. BIRTHDAY BLUES doesn't...
I just watched my laserdisc version of A TOUGH WINTER and it is in perfect sound sync. The new Genius DVD looks maybe a little sharper, but the sound sync is way off. No mistake about it and it really hurts your enjoyment of the film. It is off from start to finish. The other shorts that were...
Again I want to encouarge you to check out the colorized Genius versions. They are spectacular prints and look like Warner Bros. work. Even though they were culled from the FAMOUS KIDS prints, they are pristine. And A LAD AND A LAMP is on them and it looks like you are watching High Definition.
Transfer the laserdiscs to DVD. They are the best quality. There are a few good transfers on the new Genius version and the extras are interesting if you want to spend the money. Also, I don't think people are being overly negative. The complaints are very basic and warranted. Also, I think...
Keep your CABIN FEVER DVDs if you were fortunate enough to snag them while they were available. You can still get a box set for $50 on the internet which houses the first half. I have the second half on LASERDISC and I'm keeping them. Also, in defense of the colorized Little Rascals, they used...
I don't think anyone is trying to talk others out of buying the sets. But when you buy a DVD you expect something basic like HAVING THE SOUND SYNCHED UP! And at least using the best prints available instead of digging through an attic and pulling out an old used 16mm print.
I agree. The packaging is nice and they did attempt to make this attractive, but they should have paid attention to the most important things: SYNCHING THE SOUND, using readily-available RESTORED PRINTS.
I received my set and unfortunately A Tough Winter (1930) with Stepin Fetchit is way out of sync the whole way through. What a disappointment and deserves a remastering and replacement disc. This is the reason I bought the set and it is a bad 16mm print and the words don't even come close to...
I love this movie and have always thought it was a sheer joy to watch packed with the greatest cavalcade of talent of all time. But the commentary was the worst I've ever heard. All the USC professor talked about was how stereotypical the representations were and how incongruous it is instead of...
Since Warner Bros. got this print from a European source, is it possible that the frame in question physically had been cut out or that this print was different on that particular frame?
There are supports all through this and the MIGHTY JOE YOUNG DVD. They are all still in. Sometimes you cannot see them if you still frame forwards, but when you still frame backwards they appear. There is also a huge support on KONG in the shot before he rips Fay Wray's clothes off.
The MIGHTY JOE YOUNG documentaries and commentary are excellent. And MIGHTY JOE YOUNG looks pristine. I had forgotten how wonderful this movie is. The nightclub scene is outstanding action! Terry Moore is a lot of fun on the commentary and Ray Harrhausen adds a lot of interesting info because he...
What's the point of having a commentary AND documentary if the commentary is just a couple of film snoots talking and saying, "Oh, I really love this scene!" Then just have the documentary and use the extra audio track for music only or another language or higher bit rate? I do, however think...
The Criterion commentaries are usually the best but are probably copyrighted by them and not available to other companies. THE WIZARD OF OZ commentary by Criterion is also one of the best. The guy even mentions that Bert Lahr was very religious and did not want to divorce his wife because she...
I love the parts in the commentary with Merian C. Cooper. They are bawdy and hilarious. The best thing would have been to use all of these and have Fay Wray talk for the rest of it, but maybe she didn't have that much to say or was not able. I'm not sure. In the interviews with her she seems...
I second the applause for George Feltenstein. He is single-handedly the person responsible for the superior quality of the Warner Bros. product and care of classic films released on DVD. Many have said this before, don't you wish Warner Bros. owned everything? Yes, SON OF KONG looks better...
