Of course that implication would be wrong and that is why it was never implied Robert.
80 Days is an important film, with technical difficulties yes, but should have surfaced before now.
Hopefully the conversations between Dave and George will produce some results.
In an article for the May 58 issue of American Cinematographer,Leon Shamroy explains that the use of filters was originally used to cover up the bad weather the unit was experiencing in Kauai.A special assembly was made for the Todd-AO camera to smoothly move the filter/filters in and out of...
Coming from her, it doesn't mean much.
After all 2001 was "unimaginative" and David Lean should only film in standard ratio but would be allowed colour!
You are right.
The "restored" version on the second disc is not what you refer to.
It's been so long since I watched it I presumed that it was the version you recall and not just 14 mins of extra footage following the same continuity as the regular version.
I too saw what your parents saw when I...
What you are referring to is the original cut which is available although unrestored on the BD release.
That version also has an appalling commentary track which is an embarrassment .
However it is good that this original cut has survived.
The second print the Dominion showed was the cut now...
Stanley Baker may not be the most beautiful of the Greeks, but playing the role as a psychopath was very clever and made the character work.
You have to know about his relationship with Patroclus and its there if you look for it which is much more than Petersen manged in his Troy...
As I understand it, Mike Todd kept all the 70mm prints of 80 Days for North America and the rest of the world(and certainly UK) would screen 80 Days in Cinestage, his 35mm "poor man's Todd AO "system.
The UK had a quota on 35mm foreign productions at the time so Todd shaved of 1 mm from the...
Hi Vincent,
Yes the Dominion's screen was 46ft wide,21ft high and with a depth of curvature of 5ft.
As the proscenium was only marginally wider at 56 feet, it still provided an impressive eye filling experience.
It was the first 70mm house in the UK opening 21st April 1958-somewhat late in the...
The Dominion used two prints for their 4 year run.
The original longer cut and then the shorter version which used the overture.
Not sure when they changed.
When the original version was shown, South Pacific immediately started with the titles (no overture)straight after the
"crash "at the end...
I saw the roadshow version many times over the years in the UK.
There was a scene where Jean S is seen in a pool but it is very chaste.
Hardly what you would call a nude scene.
With respect, if you are "seeing all the wigs and make up' at not much else, perhaps it is time to check your settings.
Spears & Munsil have just release a new test disc which is highly recommendable.
The 4k My fair Lady is very fair indeed .
A reference disc for both PQ and SQ
Apparently we are getting some 5film sets in 4k as well as one set of 30 titles in 4k.
Seems to be in UK in September.
Let us hope Doctor Z, Barry Lindon, Ben Hur and North by Northwest will be among them.
An interesting aside to the debate about HT can be found in Roland's magnificent inCinerama.com site.
Check out the Minneapolis Cooper Cinerama page and you will find an interview with John Sturges after the first preview of HT which was held there.
Fascinating reading between the lines as he...
It's the old transfer but somewhat improved although marginally.
I was watching the new transfer upscaled to 4k by the Panny 420 which probably helped a lot.
If you are expecting a substantial improvement, I suggest you stay with the Sidonis.
It has been quite a while since I logged in but for those contributors who I know will be interested , the new Imprint Barabbas has arrived.
It starts with a disclaimer as to PQ and while it is far from what it should look like, it is an appreciable step up from the dreadful Sidonis French disc...
