We are mostly movie and TV series fans, so we would watch the 20th Anniversary Edition of TRON, in preparation for TRON Legacy, and then watch all the on-line trailers. This while eating large pieces of pumpkin flan with coffee or milk.
MathewA, I would say that probably all will do both, backwards compatible and upscaling. An interesting study would be how PS3 goes about that. Does PS3 upscales?
The Aspect ratio thing is not that simple. Because the current standard for widescreen TVs is 16:9 (1.78:1), and seems it will stay that way, many movies and series always show with bars. Doesn't matter if the settings are perfect between the TV and the source, if the material is wider than 1.78...
Nils, Panny's S97 and S77 let you choose if the HDMI connection will be used for video only. So, the option is already available in a reasonably priced product. I suppose on more expensive machines the option exists too.
