My first digital projector, huge disappointment

Just to comment on modern digital displays as being 'highly' inferior on producing black levels compared to crt devices. I currently own 3 different projectors. A panny 900-sony 'ruby' and a sharp 12000. LCD-LCOS-DLP are all represented and being a former sony G-70 owner I can say that the...

    Panasonic AE900 blurb

Being an owner of both an LCD and DLP projector I am very open to both technologies. Definitely the 900 model in the under 2500$ mark looks to be on top. So many features and picture performance for cheap money. If anyone is even slightly sensitive to rainbows with DLP units, this is the one...

    comparing budget projectors

For any ambient light in the room the 4805 is going to perform the best as it has a significantly more light output than any other 480p propjector. It also has the least amount of offset so placement flexibility is much better. You do not want to have to have a projector sitting in your lap do...

    Good deal on Z3?

Not too familiar with the 77 but if it has the genesis chip it will probably be the same. So many movies have difficult dark scenes for a digital projector to reproduce that the highest contrast ratio a projector can initiate will bring out more shadow detail.I feel the Z3 and especially the Z4...

    Question About sp 4805

Just feed this little gem a good 480p signal via DVI from a good dvd player like the oppo or panasonic dvd s-97 and you will be surprised how good the picture is even compared to other dlp projectors sporting 720p and 3 times the price.

    Help me pick a projector....Please.

The infocus 5000 is 720p just like the hitachi. Same resolution. Same HD capability. The infocus 4805 is not. But remember that the 4805 does other things in the picture quality department better than the previous two. Resolution definetly is not the whole issue here. The infocus 5000 has a...

    Help me pick a projector....Please.

Sean: The Hitachi projector you are describing is much more expensive than the infocus. Do you realize that the Hitachi is LCD based and the Infocus is DLP based? You should first get familiarized with the technical advantages of each projector type. Without knowing what direction you want to...

    Help me pick a projector....Please.

If you are sitting back from the screen at least 14' or more the infocus 4805 on a 106" screen would give you excellent performance for dvd and HD. No, it is not native HD resolution capable but it would still look great. Match this up with a Panasonic dvd S97 player outputting 480p...

    Good deal on Z3?

The Z2 is a 720p projector just as the z3 is. Resolution is identical. I know because I work on them for a living and have had both models in our shop The z3 is almost twice the contrast ratio and while the z2 is a good unit, the z3 performes better in the shadow detail department. Get the...

    Good deal on Z3?

The only real difference between the Z2 and the Z3 is increase in contrast ratio from 1300 to 2000. Other than that the differences are minimal.;)

    Still more PJ questions...

The projector is conected by HDMI by the S97 and by a panasonic RP-91 on the component input. I have much different calibration settings for each input. The interlaced signal looks to have more video noise in the picture and not as 'smooth' an image as from the scaled 720p image from the S97...

    Still more PJ questions...

Paul: the panny 700 in Canada should sell in the range of 3000$ cdn. or a little less depending on geographical area and vendor influence. I have played with this projector for quite a while and the internal scaling with a 480i signal does nor even come close to my panasonic dvd s97...

I see the screen grain in whites (did I get the wrong screen)

Very basic scenario. Any screen door can and will be the most noticeable on a pure white background when the projector shows just such an image. Unfortunately you are seeing screen door effect and the situation you describe is the most common scenario to notice it. I have a 720p projector...

    4805 screen size 106" vs 92"

I hace a 106" draper onyx m1300 in my main theater with a 720p LCD projector. At the 14' seating distance from the screen, the picture quality with good dvd transfers is phenomenal. Your 4805 at 13' viewing distance on a 92" screen will look better than you think. Best of luck with the project;)

    Projector under $1000

Optomas H27 is also in your price range and has some substantial PQ improvements over the 4805. I am not saying it is better over all than the 4805 but just another option in your price catagory. As for screen size, the 2x rule with most 480p projectors is standard. Screens less than 92" will...

    4805 screen size 106" vs 92"

Do you want BIG or GOOD picture quality. The 4805 at 92" will shine, shine, shine. You can either listen to reason or take a chance on your own judgment. Anything larger than 100" with a 480p projector at less than 12' is going to amplify all sorts of video source artifacts and screen door...

    Good deal on Z3?

I hope I did not confuse anyone from my previous posts (sometimes I even confuse myself):D, but I only own the 700 but am very familiar with the Z3 as I have seen it in action. The Z3 does pretty well everything the 700 does but will require a little pre-planing for placement. The suspended...

    Good deal on Z3?

At that price I would be all over it. I do not believe this projector will ever go much lower than that for quite a while. I own the panasonic 700 and even though I love it for what it is, the sanyo at the prices they are at now make it the one to go with. ;)

CRT-RP Image Quality vs Front Projector

Chris and I seem to share the same view on CRT performance when it comes to picture quality in many areas. Being a previous SONY G70 owner, I am still a hardcore believer that the technology to replace the CRT in either front projection or rear projection has not been invented yet. Yes there are...

Projectors: Turn it off or leave it on?

I am not sure if there is a difference between manufacturers but the salesman I bought my projector from has a panasonic PT-AE 500U and he has been through 2 bulbs. Each bulb lasted over 4000 hours. He is now on to the third with no problems with the projector itself even after 9000 hours. So it...

Projectors: Turn it off or leave it on?

When I had my previous sony G70 crt projector, there was over 16,000 hours on the tubes and the green tube actually was starting to go first. This of course was a crt device which really does not apply here. Yes, the blue panel is the one to degrade first. Just how long will it take? Well I...

Projectors: Turn it off or leave it on?

Evan is exactly correct about crt devices being the only current display technology to have any 'burn in' issues. LCD can leave 'temporary ghosting' because of the static charge being applied to the lcd panels at a sustained constant voltage. This generaly will be seen for all lcd displayes...

rainbow in my DLP not seen before

Gavin, you are right on the ball about the light images on dark backgrounds as most problematic for noticing rainbows. Movie credits will also be a good way to see them if you are developing rbe sensitivity. Statistics show that less than 10% of dlp user notice rainbows or are bothered by them.

a couple of questions regarding the Panasonic 700...

Rob, I have quite a bit of experience with this projector so I can hopefully be of some assistance. The panasonic PT-AE700U and my Draper onyx m1300 106" screen cost me 4800$ cdn. approx. 6 months ago. This of course is in the southern ontario market where competition can usually mean an...

rainbow in my DLP not seen before

Gavin. There is nothing wrong with your television. I have had dlp products in the past and only started noticing rainbows after about 3 months. If it does not really bother you then I really would not put too much emphasis on it. Once you start seeing them then it is more than likely that...

    Projector Suggestions

Blowup sale of Infocus X1 at the Official Store

Thanks for the comments on the equipment. It is years of upgrading from years ago. I had no ill effects from the 1 hour with the 4805 at all. I might add that The eye strain usually starts after extended viewing sessions. I first noticed it with the sharp unit after watching 2 full length films...
