Thanks for the replies everyone. It sounds as though most of the missing frames I pointed out were editing decisions but a couple were maybe damage to original negative (like Oddjob's car turning corner). Good to know it's not the Ultimate Editions.
Hello Everyone, I have read this entire thread (wow, it's long) and there are a lot of people here who know the 007 movies REALLY well. So hopefully I'm not taking nitpicking to a whole new level here, but I think somebody here might be able to answer my questions about the Region 1 007...
Two things: 1) Would it be possible to delete my earlier posts? I wouldn't want anyone to have to read a post that isn't a version of "Flash Gordon is a really great movie. I really love it. The new DVD will be really great." LOL 2)That cover art is nothing short of BREATHTAKING!
Movies are always judged subjectively by the masses, but they most certainly can be judged objectively. For example, Sam Jones' dialogue is not what we hear in the film because it was deemed unsuitable. Probably because he was discovered as a contestant on The Dating Game and he wasn't even an...
Whoa! OK, since when is making a bad film excused by "that was our intention"? FLASH GORDON (1980) is a bad film. It's poorly written, poorly acted, and REALLY poorly directed. Yeah, I like it just like the rest of you, but the fact that we like (or even love) the movie doesn't make it a...
Those are good points Kevin. I certainly believe that writers and directors should have the creative control to be able to tell their stories properly, but in this case I think that they were looking down on the material. Making a mockery of it if you will. Nevertheless, I am looking forward...
I merely said that the production wasn't meant to be camp from it's inception. Hindsight being 20/20, obviously Mike Hodges and Lorenzo Semple Jr. were 100% incorrect to steer the production in that direction. Spending $35 million to make $27 million (more like $14 million after taxes!) is not...
I've got to disagree with you Kevin M. I know this is semantics, but I don't think the intent was to make something camp. When I say this I mean intended by the man in charge: Dino De Laurentiis. I'm sure that Mike Hodges felt like he was above the material, which is the reason he was a poor...
I don't know about your theory Kevin M. I'm 100% sure that some of the humor and silliness was intentional, but I don't really buy in to the idea they were purposely making something along the lines of the Batman television show. Why would they?
Flash Gordon (1980) is truly horrible. Yet, like a lot of you, I love it. Why is that?! When I think of Flash Gordon I always think of George Lucas. How he unsuccessfully tried to get the rights to make Flash Gordon feature films. Those same rights holders must have been kicking themselves...
Nothing wrong with geeking out Grant H. We are on a Star Wars thread after all! I thought you made some good points, but I just think that a realistic fight will always trump an over-choreographed fight. Of course I'm a person who loves Indiana Jones, the dirtiest fighter in cinema history...
Richard, it's called the Imperial MARCH. The scene you placed it in is a reveal. It may work for you, but it doesn't fit the scene. In fact, I would say that your changes completely ruin the scene. The reason the scene is so well done is that Williams put in a big bass drum and cymbal motif to...
Richard Kim, that music doesn't work in that scene. At all. All the music you used from the Original Trilogy was used in parts that don't contain dialogue, and for a very good reason. To anyone who thinks we'll see a limited theatrical release.....don't hold your breath. Very unlikely.
MielR, what "making of" book? I have a feeling we will see a pretty definitive 6 film DVD set in September. With anamorphic transfers of the original unaltered trilogy. Of course they could have done it for the last release, but why would they when they can fleece us diehards one more time...
I got my corrected Superman: The Movie disc in the mail today. It does have an English option that isn't the 5.1. It just says "English" instead of "English 2.0 Stereo" or something like that. I'm just glad that the WB did the correction. I wouldn't have purchased it otherwise.
Joel Henderson, you're ideas for a definitive edition of Close Encounters are perfect: "Disc 1 - Original 1977 version (NOT THE CRITERION CUT!). Fully restored from the original negative in 16:9 anamorphic (2.40:1). Dolby Digital 4.1 Surround reconstructing the original baby boom low...
No I'm not saying that Will, they are keeping the same aspect ratio basically, just zooming in on the picture slightly on all four sides. We're losing picture information at every edge of the frame. Not sure why.
I have read several in-depth reviews of classic films in the last few days. And I keep running into the same thing: cropping. The Wizard of Oz 3 disc set, Rocky Collectors Edition, Dracula 75th Anniversary etc... All are missing picture information at the top, the bottom, the left, and the...
mike kaminski, can you elaborate on why the Lawrence of Arabia DVD's are so inadequate? I have never really heard this before. In complete agreement concerning the original Star Wars DVD release!
Why are some considered really great and others considered less than great? I know that Superman: The Movie, Jaws, and Star Wars have 5.1 remixes that a lot of people don't care for. Why is that? Is a 5.1 that a majority consider really good have all the original elements?
I was looking at the specs on the new Rocky Anthology and it has "original mono" as an option for Rocky. If it's the same exact transfer as the Collectors Edition, isn't it likely it's the same movie only disc?
I guess I'm confused. Some reviews are saying that the original mono is included on the new Rocky Collectors Edition. But Amazon doesn't list that in their specs for the disc. Mono French and Spanish, but not English. So is the original mono English on there?
I double dipped on Jaws to get the original soundtrack. And even though it is one of my favorite all-time films, I didn't buy the most recent release of The Little Mermaid because it didn't include the original soundtrack. It would have been a must-have purchase if Disney had included it. The...
Since double and triple (or more!) dipping is such a prevalent practice with DVD's, which titles that haven't yet are most surprising? My picks off the top of my head would be Jurassic Park, Psycho, and the Indiana Jones Trilogy.
Thanks Brian PB, I knew it was something along those lines, but I wasn't sure exactly how it worked. The only other question I have is how exactly does an anamorphic widescreen image in a 4X3 frame look correct on a 4X3 television without the extra room to stretch it out? And so I am not...
How come Seven Samurai isn't anamorphic? Does anamorphic only apply to films that aren't 1.37 (1.33) Academy Flat? Some technical explanation would be good, because I would really like to understand how this works for that aspect ratio.
