All professional DVDs are coded at 720×480 resolution (3:2 aspect ratio). The display is stretched/squashed to 4:3 or 16:9 depending on the flag in the IFO file. I'm not sure why you're getting different results in different seasons, but accessing the VOB files without going through the IFO file...
That is promising. I can't say that I'm familiar with CBS's library practices, but it seems unlikely that they had unedited copies just laying around ready for use. And if they did, then S8 and S9 would surely have been with them. This likely indicates further restoration efforts. It's possible...
The synopsis for this release:
"The Honeymooners - Specials: A Christmas Carol - In 1977, Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows, Art Carney and Jane Kean reunited for the second of four hour-long specials representing the final performances of their classic Honeymooners characters. Ralph enlists...
Great to see the Honeymooners' A Christmas Carol getting released. I seem to recall speculation that they skipped this one when they released the other three special among the final four because it had music clearance issues. I wonder whether they cleared that up, or made cuts. I obviously am...
That sounds like a bootleg to me. Other than a temporary promotion at Universal's theme parks, Stranger Things has no connection to Universal Studios. A quick search and all I was able to find was a customer review complaining that they too thought the "Universal" ST Season 3 DVDs are...
The key part is this: "(Carla looks back at Norm and turns to leave as the scene dissolves to the outside view of the bar entrance (with a bit of Cheers music). The scene then dissolves to Rebecca's office as the professor enters.)"
The dialogue before and after that seems to all be there. It's...
That is very interesting. It sounds to me like they had to work with the syndication masters, and manually add back in film elements from the original cut (rather than working with the original master). It's quite possible that they couldn't find the original elements for the parts they didn't...
Thanks, SpacemanDoug, for all the additional info!
I got out my trust Season 4 DVD set and confirmed that this is not an edit present on the DVD release. This edit is exclusive to digital/streaming versions.
They may have restored some footage (I'm not really sure), but 3 minutes of missing...
From my understanding, season 8 was prepared by Paramount prior to the merger. The set was released in June 2006, and the merger had taken effect earlier in 2006. However, clearing music rights would have been one of the first things done in getting a release ready, so it was very likely done...
I think it would be premature to say that they are lost. The far more likely scenario is that Sony prepared the first three seasons for release on DVD (going back to either the original masters or some other pre-syndication copy), but scrapped the whole thing before releasing Season 3 on DVD...
Season 11, Episode 14 - It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Bar - Music while the gang tears apart the bar looking for hidden money has been replaced. Original music was Money (That's What I Want) by Barrett Strong. Replacement music is a knock-off: “I Want Money.” This has been restored in streaming...
Season 11, Episode 3 - The King of Beers - About a minute of instrumental music during the beer factory montage has been replaced with a soundalike. Original version sounds like a jazzy Put On A Happy Face with piano and saxophone. Replacement is generic and piano (with a little bit of flute)...
If I had to guess, I'd bet that a Blu-ray release would be the best version yet. The music rights licensed for the DVDs would very likely apply to other physical home media as well, and I'd bet that the licenses they've acquired since for streaming would cover physical releases too. But for the...
Yes, there are some parts restored for the streaming/digital versions. However, I've read in other threads that some content has also been cut that was on the DVDs. I can't confirm that part myself, but I can confirm what was missing on the DVDs and got put back...
I bought the set and have mostly good news about it. It has all known extended cuts for the episodes... except for Chapters 1 (Everything is Fine) and 13 (Michael’s Gambit).
There are no known extended versions for Chapters 2 (Flying), 12 (Mindy St. Claire), 14-15 (Everything is Great), 27-28...
It seems like every time there is a thread about Cheers, the topic of music replacements comes up. Rather than putting this in an existing thread, I thought this topic deserved its own thread given how many times this has come up over the years.
Searching through the various threads here and...
Anyone have any confirmation whether these will be the extended versions? So far Shout Factory's DVD releases have had mostly extended episodes (Chapter 1 and 13 were not) but the rest of the first three seasons episodes were extended (except Chapters 2, 12, 14, 15, 27, and 28, which as far as I...
To clarify your clarification... :)
The DVD version of the finale is not the original-length version. It is a three-episode version (which is missing scenes) edited back together to form one long episode. Overall, there are several minutes of footage missing from the finale as a result.
I just got my copy of The Official Fifth Season and here's my quick summary.
The length listed on the back of the case is the same as Amazon's current listing (11 hrs, 48 mins - or 708 minutes). Regardless of that, the length of the episodes is considerably higher. 29 of the 30 episodes on the...
Update: I was able to confirm that both instances of Glenn Miller instrumentals have been cut from 320.
Garysb: I was only able to locate this from VEI directly, from VEI through Amazon, and from third-parties via eBay. Buying direct from VEI was the least expensive option for me, as they are...
Thanks, Obsolete Man!
I've gone through the episodes two ways now: 1) Checking for music in known places, and 2) Checking the length of each act against syndicated runs. Here's what I have at this time:
Music replaced: 306, 313, 318, 405, 414, 419, 420
Scenes cut (music related): 305, 406...
My preliminary report on Season 3 in the VEI DVD set:
301: Opera music sill present.
305: Footage cut to remove Patrick singing Strawberry Fields Forever like a dolphin, but other music appears to be intact.
306: Monster Mash music deleted, but footage and dialog appear intact.
312: On-screen...
I just got my set. I took a look at D4 D1 just to see what I could find.
401 & 402 have no licensed music, so I skipped them
403 & 404 appear to have the same music as originally, though my ear for instrumentals and opera isn't great
405 (Camera Shy) is missing "Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op...
Thank you, Obsolete Man! This was very helpful!
I should note a couple things about the runtimes that I provided. For the CBS ones, they do not include the next-episode preview and the end-credits run 25 seconds. Also, I was incorrect earlier about PAX not airing 419; they did, but weather...
So I have some answers for you:
And here are the runtimes for the PAX airings:
At first, this looks like the PAX airings were syndicated cuts. Note, however, the length for episodes 311, 406, and 419. These were from original CBS broadcasts (PAX did not air those episodes for various...
Actually, I think that the Hallmark rips are time-compressed. I recall someone showing an episode from them and noticing the high-pitch. I believe that they were recorded in a PAL territory. Perhaps my memory is fuzzy, as that was many years ago and I do not have copies to check against (I only...
Thanks to Chris for providing the link to the list of music from Early Edition. I noticed that the list was sorted by episode title alphabetically, and figured that it would be more useful for testing the DVDs is they were sorted by episode chronology. Here's what I came up with:
I can...
Excellent news! Much as I love Shout Factory, this show deserves a HD release.
In addition to whether this will be region locked, we also need to know whether they are the broadcast or extended cuts. I'm very much hoping for the extended cuts.
