Having absolutely no missing time code issues on my 2 players (Samsung 1590 & Visionquest's Momitsu knock-off), I guess I would say that it might be best to try out another player before presuming it to be a universal problem, and focusing much of your criticism on this issue. Perhaps your disc...
Quoting from the review: The Patchwork Girl of Oz (1914) - is another vintage silent "Oz" feature, previously thought to be lost.
Many of us "found" it nearly a decade ago, in 2001, as it is part of the Image Entertainment's (now OOP) 3 dvd set entitled "Origins of Film". That print has far...
WHY would they have a MONO downmix of the redone stereo track? Even if they were trying to help out those with only a two channel setup, it would be a 2 channel STEREO downmix, don't you think? That leads me to conclude that Universal THOUGHT they were providing the original mono track and that...
Ah, but Franz Waxman's score for "Taras Bulba" IS one of the best scores for the genre, Waxman and the movies in general! The stereo sound is quite good, and I think it would be a shame to miss out on it because of the film itself, which in any case is very much elevated by the score!
I saw the ad in the NY Times about this, and thought it was a typo (10 films?) thinking they were talking about 3 FULL days of Ford. Well, I'm not generally a TCM basher (although I wish they would showcase new additions to their library more visibly), but this is nothing so much as an...
I've been trying DVD Spot for a little bit now, and it's great if they have the titles you have in the database, but if they don't, you're looking at a huge investment of time and effort! I tried to import my CSV file from DVD Profiler, and on each group of 50, almost 20 titles are not...
The French language track seem to be with Cohen voicing the part, and is worth a listen if you're in the mood. The Russian track has an attempt to sound Cohen-ish, but not the Spanish one, which is incredibly "off"!
My copy rented from BBuster, has the "Demorez" fake DVDR label (I did quite a double-take upon opening the box!), but the actual printing of "DVDR" is not there.......must be a special rental version out there as well. I think the joke would have been even funnier if they had made the playing...
I'm sorry to hear that, but thanks for the info. I guess Criterion has to recognize a disc as problem disc then, before they do something about it?? Strange, although funny things have happened recently: someone discovered a transposed line of dialogue in the newer issue of "M"....when it was...
What does a RARE manufacturing defect by the company pressing this disc.....the same freak pressing defect that has afflicted Universals's contemporaneous PSYCHO & VERTIGO discs, and one which only became apparent years later ......have to do with Criterion's own quality control? Criterion is...
I still had that FMC version on my Dish PVR and it looks much better than the dvd....brighter (if a bit too bright) and more colorful, and more detailed. I have a feeling that it is the same basic element, but they really messed up something on the dvd with the brightness.....it's just too...
Just to add to this point, many of the bumps are not actually at splice points, but various debris and damage to the soundtrack area over the years, and certainly aren't directorial effects. Regardless, today's audio editing software, when not overused, can easily remove the bumps without...
Thanks to Dave Pattern for your detailed comparison of that scene, and apologies for not being able to follow up some of my comments, made WAY back for Dave Kehr's blog, and several other forums. The scene you excerpt is interesting, but is not one of the instances I noted, actually. It's very...
The French dvds DO contain the sound alterations, that's (and the TCM airing) where I picked up on this issue. I do agree this is NOT the way they should be issued, however, to simply remove sonic bumps from edit points is certainly not in the same category. Surely, these are not desirable...
I remember the Criterion LD release (which was licensed from MPI) had that mono/stereo mix that the MPI DVD sported. I don't know whether this was it's debut (the LD), or whether they simply used what MPI gave them. I remember theatrical prints from the 80s having this mix also.
Of course the funny thing is, this LOC restoration had already been completed (and even aired on AMC) BEFORE the old crap disc was released!! They (well, Image) similarly botched "Double Indemnity" the first time around. But all's well that ends well. Check out the price on DDD....under $7!!
I made those comments about the sound on the French DVD issues. I don't believe the Pagnol set was done by the same people, but THAT set is by far, more irritating than what is on the Hitchcock sets, as it is a constant barrage of additional sound effects. I still would prefer not to see this...
NONE of the region 1 releases are worth anything. You have to go R2 with that recent French Studio Canal set. The image is fantastic throught the 3 sets in that collection (numberous silents and early sound films), although they've done some annoying tinkering with the sound on the sound films...
And the fact that the whole set costs about the price of a single disc doesn't enter into the equation? Trade in the old one, and get the new one, that's what I'll be doing....it may cost me as much as $10. Meanwhile, I would LOVE to see Paramount give us more of the silent films they issued...
How about Ernst Lubitsch's 1930 film, "Monte Carlo", once a part of a Laser set I passed on, but not any other format, even VHS, and not aired on tv within the last 20 years that I've noticed.
Bootlegs probably play better than these discs do now! Yah, I'll send 'em a blank dvdr with Vertigo written with a Sharpie and see what happens. Meanwhile, I can't seem to get a response from WB on the "Kiss Me Kate" disc I have, which I'm told can be replaced with a correctly framed...
The Koch set is PD crap from reports I've read at alt.silent.movies There IS good news about some of the silent films from Laughsmith, the label that issued the wonderful Arbuckle set: One of Laughsmith's current projects is Our Gang: Before The Little Rascals Spoke, planned for an early...
I discovered an odd thing about this intermission music. The Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony recording sounded very familiar...rather like I remembered the Stokowski/Philadelphia Orchestra recording...only that recording wasn't made until 1934. Sure enough, pulled out my cd of it, and that's what they...
