5.1 receiver that converts signals to HDMI

don't look for 5.1 to save money - it's oldtech that will only limit your selection - 7.1 is standard - i only use a stereo setup but my receiver is 7.1.

yamaha HTR-6290 - can i turn speakers off?

thanks for looking that up, but it's not the situation i'm in. does anyone have an hdmi switching, analog to hdmi up-converting receiver they know will allow me to turn off the speaker output separate from the pre-amp outs?

yamaha HTR-6290 - can i turn speakers off?

hi guys - just hooked up my yamaha HTR-6290 receiver and i can't seem to turn the speakers off. i only have main l + r, and i listen to headphones through a dedicated headphone amp connected to the pre-outs. my old yamaha receiver had speaker off settings on the front panel AND the remote. i...

New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

aha. thanks - i thought there was something else - still sounds like the machine for me. i assume you meant back/comp w/ps like i said in my question post though. so the whole list is - compatibility with ps2 and ps games - sacd playback - memory card slots - 2 instead of 4 usb slots -...

New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

so what all does the 40 gb drop? i've seen the bc w/ps2 mentioned and i believe sacd support is gone - anything else? i borrowed a friend's for a while - very nice machine!

    PS3 out question

optical digital is audio only. for surround sound you'd have to go component video plus optical audio to the receiver then hdmi to tv (picture would be compromised but probably not noticeably). or you would go hdmi to tv, optical out from tv to receiver (assuming the tv has a digital audio out)...

    Radiohead- Choose your own price.

they probably hate the lag between completing a new album and its proper release in stores especially when its sitting there on a computer anyway - then watching leaks from stolen files, poor quality, incomplete sources spread out to the world. plus they have to figure out the new record...

    Radiohead- Choose your own price.

the choice isn't between cheap download or expensive box set. it's between authorized preview and/or cd release date 4 months from now. if this were done the traditional way they would have announced the album this week and you would be able to buy it early next year. unless they never...

    Radiohead- Choose your own price.

i think you've got to look at this as an approved leak with a suggested donation. if you don't want to preview a download just wait til the cd is in stores in the new year as it would be without the download. this is such a progressive, considerate and, frankly, cool experiment i just don't...

    S-Video Vs Composite?

not only is s-video better than composite, some feel its better for standard cable signals (standard def.) than the split up component connection. plus the jump in quality from composite to s-video can be more dramatic than the jump from s-video to component! if i remember correctly.

Question on the so-called "warmth" of newer vinyl...

"warmth" is generally distortion. opposites would be "harsh" or "shrill" - generally caused by too much treble - but warmth is not less treble or more bass. it is also not digital distortion (crappy clipping sound) or severe overdrive like heavy metal guitar. this warmth generally...

downmixed dvd-a or stereo pcm for beatles?

i'm a little doubtfull about the disparity being just more musical compression on the dvd-a program. i'm listening to the mix-down on my akg k701 headphones through a dedicated tube headphone amp - very revealing setup - cranked much higher than any other sources i listen too. sounds great -...

downmixed dvd-a or stereo pcm for beatles?

alright i'll just decide for myself. i guess i was wondering if whatever makes a dvd-a downmix quieter makes the pcm program preferable. i've always wondered this as the player always defaults to the multi-channel program. i listen, then select the stereo program. it sounds better, but i...

downmixed dvd-a or stereo pcm for beatles?

i was hoping to get the facts before trying to compare. it's hard enough doing a/b tests with instant switching let alone stopping, switching audio programs then level matching. the advantage would conceivably be that the downmixing (blending of channels - not downsampling) the dvd-a program...

downmixed dvd-a or stereo pcm for beatles?

my player is doing the downmix. since i have my mains set as large and center, surrounds and sub set to off i get all channels through the main l and r out. multiouts aren't used. dvd-a, multichannel and downmix indicator lights are illuminated on the player (yamaha dvd-c750 universal changer)...

downmixed dvd-a or stereo pcm for beatles?

i usually listen to hi-rez (mostly sacd) by selecting the stereo program (i have a stereo setup). but the "love" dvd-a of the beatles only has a stereo mix in pcm. the downmix in dvd-a is significantly quieter than the pcm stereo (as downmixes always are) - should i just turn the volume up on...

Question on the so-called "warmth" of newer vinyl...

lots of people want the retro vibe and there are studios who offer not only reel to reel tape facilities but also completely "vintage" equipment and instruments. the white stripes are perhaps the most famous to insist on 100% old timey sonics.

Question on the so-called "warmth" of newer vinyl...

the short answer is yes. the playing of vinyl affects frequencies (as does, say, tape) - whereas digital does not. one reason why cd got the rep of lacking warmth was because they would master cds the same as records - but the "warmth" wouldn't be applied by the playback medium. the other...

    connect headphone amp to pre-outs?

i will be listening to both analog and digital sources. the record outs do either, not both so i was planning on using the headphone amp as a power amp - leaving its volume fixed - and using the receiver's volume to control things. yamaha tech says its ok to use the pre-outs with speakers...

    Analog/Digital sound?????

my yamaha has a setting to use analog or digital or auto select the audio for each component. if both are present it will choose the digital. look through the settings menu and choose analog for zone 2 use. it is likely the sound quality will not be better from the optical input (sacd or...

i did a lot of web reading before i got the player. all of its quirks are addressed in this forum. bay bloor radio was the only place that carried it in toronto although any yamaha retailer could have ordered it. i wouldn't use it for random music play as the disks load slowly but other than...
