Depends on the speakers, to a degree. How difficult are they to drive? Nice efficient 8 ohm speakers aren't going to sound much different, IMHO, with an 80 wpc amp or a 200 wpc amp of the same make. I couldn't hear a dam bit of difference with my speakers when I unplugged the 200 wpc to test...
You picked a great set. I don't think what you're seeing is in any way indicative of "something wrong" ... it's just a phenomenon that occurs in some sets. Unless, of course, it doesn't go away. :) That is extremely rare and I have never heard of it happening in a tv environment (as opposed...
And that illustrates the very subjective nature of this business. I have never heard a Def Tech that I could stand to listen to for more than 5 minutes. Everyone hears things differently.
I don't care much how they look. Occasionally stuff comes unplugged (moving stuff around, cats misbehaving). Plugging in a banana jack is a lot easier then anything else. That's why I use them. And they don't mess up the sound.
I would suggest you find some speakers like NHT, Paradigm, etc. to listen to. You might have to shop in a more specialized "hi fi" type store to hear them. If you want stuff that will last (I don't mean physically), that will satisfy you for years to come, I think you have to step above the...
Chris, I don't think it's a question of being "ground solidly" it's a question of the DirectTV using a different ground path than the rest of the system. Is it?
ATSC is digital tv, both SD and HD. NTSC is the old SD standard (480i). You need NTSC to tune SD cable channels coming out of the wall. You need ATSC to tune HD channels coming OTA and out of the wall. Some sets have a cable card slot to insert a card from your cable company which, I...
Thiel? Good lord. I could name about a bunch of makes right off the top of my head that are far brighter and are recommended daily around here. How about Def Tech, Klips(ch), Infinity, and Polk for starters? Thiel are some of the best speakers I have ever heard, but then that was...
Audiogon has regular listings for used Meridian units starting at just over $1k, some with 7.1 processing. If I were in the market I'd be all over something like that. I have no interest, though, in video switching, or the latest Dolby/DTS acronyms. It just doesn't interest me.
An electronics tech where I work was helping me diagnose an intermittent hum I was having, and he said a dimmer definitely can generate hums. Also fluorescent bulbs. Also having stuff plugged into different outlets. I don't think ground loops per se are intermittent, and if it's a dimmer I...
I drink green tea occasionally. When I do I prefer Good Earth's g.t. blend with lemongrass. I much prefer black tea however ... though not as rich in antioxidants it still has them, and I find it much more palatable. I like a fine imported loose Assam tea by Jackson's in the morning, but I'll...
I agree ... great show. Virtually no profanity, no soft porn, crime without gore, intelligent plots, intellectual theme ... can't possibly last. But I hope it does.
The Rotel pre/pros and amps are a nice value -- very good performers for less than a premium price. Some find Rotel's sound a bit laid-back ... to me that is much preferable to the kinds of harsh colorations that some gear adds. I do believe you will hear a clear and substantial difference...
Did you audition anything else? Or just bang, buy the Maggies? That seems pretty impulsive. What about in 6 months when you hear someone else's Martin Logans? Wouldn't you want to listen to lots of different stuff and order the best you can find/afford at the time? Just curious.
Hmmm, not sure, but today's free advice is: know when to say when. Nothing looks more silly than over-bleached white teeth ("hey, can you use them for flashlights at night?")
Have you seen those cardboard trooper/patrol car silhouettes? There's a stretch of I70 W of Hagerstown, where the highway comes down off a mountain into a flat stretch of valley ... dead straight. I have (occasionally) used the stretch to see how fast I was comfortable in whatever particular...
>"As long as your not sitting in a null?" You know, I find my MX-200 to be *extremely* sensitive WRT placement. If you find yours isn't going as deep as you like, have you spent some quality time nudging it around? Literally, an inch or two in either direction and slight rotations make a BIG...
>"For $300 I would suggest you go with bookshelf speakers instead of floorstanders. In that pricerange, you'll get a better speaker (less money spent on wood venier and internal bracing and more on drivers and crossover)." Agreed. Was there a subwoofer in the picture somewhere? This would be...
