Wow - you guys rock! Thank you all for the quick responses. So forgive me for dumbing this down to my level, but what I'm hearing is: Best bet would be upgrading the receiver. After that, I'm better off getting 6 analog connectors (Samsung 6500) and running them over to the receiver...
I just got home with my new blu ray, and learned that my receiver is old and does not offer Dolby True HD. I apologize for some basic questions, but I do not have a very good understanding of encoding formats and the various interfaces. I have 5.1, and accordingly, I always thought my receiver...
I haven't posted in awhile, but could use some advice. Right now I've got 5.1 and need to replace my cc and mains. They currently are Axiom M22 bookshelf speakers and cc, wall mounted with a bracket. Frankly, they hang too far off the wall for my wife’s liking. Actually, she sort of hates...
I have to agree with Alon here. I liken Axiom's to Paradigm's monitor line, but for that price point you could get Paradigm studios... On the other hand, I don't know what you're driving them with, so maybe the efficiency of Klipsch would suit you better. But make sure you demo the speakers...
I chose Axioms after comparing them to Klipsch. I found that Klipsch were a bit harsh. Klipsch are certainly efficient though, and that may be something you need to consider. Also, while I don't mean to add unnecessary confusion, you may also want to consider paradigm. But all in all, you're...
I recently bought an cd of some classical music that's supposed to be in dolby surround sound. The CD case says "High Performance" but doesn't say SACD anywhere... are these the same thing? I play cd's on my dvd player, but my dvd player doesn't support SACD. my dvd player won't play this...
I can completely relate to this. I'm Bill, and I've had my 55inch Sony HD-LCD-projection for about 6 months now. Through Comcast I get a couple of channels that I commonly refer to as "the random S* in HD channel" (even though there are like 3 of them.) My wife keeps walking in on me...
Gee Gavin... now I'm just plain scared! Oh well. I didn't buy mine from Oppo... I bought it from surf audio/video... which I think is one of few oppo dealers. Hopefully I won't have any problems though, and it's re-assuring that the picture's good. I'll probably put up a post when I...
I have a few thoughts here sorry if they're a bit disjoint: -If I went w/ these speakers you listed above, I'd say you should put them all in the wall, as opposed to all in the wall except the center. There's an advantage in having your fronts match. -As far as your "is Boston a good...
Anthony, Dalton's suggestion is very good, and highly consistent with everything I've ever read. I've never heard Ascend's... for me the speaker's aesthetics was a big consideration b/c my wife wasn't crazy w/ me turning the living room into a home theater to begin with... and the black box...
With that budget, I'd probably go with paradigm titans in the front and atoms in the rear... and then either the cc170 or cc270 as the center. Or I'd go w/ Axiom M3's for fronts and rears and the VP 100 for the center and M2's for the rears. Of course... I like paradigm and axiom...
Mort, thanks for the post. I checked out the review at Secrets. It's glowing! (by the way, LOL on your post on the other thread about the box you're waiting for... HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, DVD-A, SACD and fold and press your underwear... hell, even my wife would ok that!) James, I really appreciate...
My DVD player is dying an untimely death, I was hoping that the old Toshiba prog-scan would last until the whole HD/BluRay thing was sorted out... it didn't. I don't want to blow the bank on something too expensive, but want something decent. I was just about convinced to get a Denon 1920...
Doug, I'm currently considering getting a Denon 1920, so naturally I'm curious why you wrote that neither that nor the 1720 should be under consideration. Is it simply b/c his budget allows for better items out there, and because one of the 1920's advantages is the HDMI interface which he...
Hey all, I'm beginning a search for a new DVD player, and am looking for both advice regarding what options I should be considering, as well as outright "buy this" recommendations. Currently I have a relatively old progressive scan Toshiba that's starting to show signs of dying. Please excuse...
Ok, that's not too bad. I can still enjoy movies and music in the room adjacent to the bedroom if I'm up late working (or up late watching movies.) Now, I've also heard about headphones that are supposed to simulate 5.1... do those really work? It just seems awfully similar to Bose's...
I just watched that this afternoon as well... the room shook throughout and I started wondering if this movie was going to cause anyone any problems. I read that this movie puts out bass below 20hz. Sorry I can't offer you any advice on the $200.00 sub question. I've seen a lot of posts where...
Thank you all very much for the advice! Sounds like Grado and Sennheiser are both good bets. I'm thinking of the Sennheiser HD 580. How important is a headphone amp? The headphones would be pluged into an Onkyo 601. Also, aren't there a variety of head phone jacks, would this be able to plug...
Good advice, I poked around at some of the older thread on the topic... as expected, I now have more quesitons than I did before. (proving myself a complete novice) what's the difference between open and closed?
I apologize in advance if this isn't the proper section for this thread. Last night my wife went to sleep, and I was listening to music while working. To be curious, I turned off the music. I suspect this is likely going to happen more often, so good headphones is probably a good investment...
Thanks Illka! That makes sense. If you don't mind me asking, what are the risks? I have an SVS PB12+ paired with Axiom speakers and I tend to have the subwoofer volume turned up quite a bit (I watch a lot of movies, and I enjoy a lot of deep bass.) But I hadn't seriously considered the...
John, I'm sort of a newbie around here, I'm not familiar with the term "running your sub hot." What exactly does that mean? Sorry for the naive question. ---Bill
