    refurb DA5000ES?

hi JL, thanks for the opinion. the 5000ES is about $600 and the 7100ES is about $1250. that still makes the 5000ES a great value. there are lots of reported issues with the 5000ES. have you had any trouble with yours?

    refurb DA5000ES?

i'm on the fence about purchasing a refurbished 5000ES. is there anyone who can give me some feedback on your experience with this digital AVR. i've read such mixed reviews, that i'm hoping for some first hand HTF experience. my use will be for 90% movies. thanks, eric

    PB12 plus 2 or PB ultra 2?

i've had both. we started with the pb12+2 and upgraded to the ultra 2. you will not be disappointed with either one. imo, the pb12+2 is the bang for the buck sweetspot for the high end SVS line. the ultra driver has a different sound signature, but for most ht applications, you would be hard...

Would this even be an upgrade?

hi greg, most of the brands you are considering are a "lateral" move at best. i suggest you upgrade your front soundstage and keep a couple of your current speakers as surrounds. we chose these: http://www.salksound.com/htshome.html for just a little more $ you can step way up in class to a...

Who is using Ribbon Speakers besides Tom Vodhanel?

Jim Salk uses AC ribbons in his HTS series. i have the MTMs for our fronts and the dispersion seems wider than other ribbons i've heard. once you've heard good ribbons it's hard to go back to domes. check out reviews of Jim's designs at audioreview.com. best, eric

Which speakers for front & center upgrade?

hi seth, you probably have it right on the lack of shielding for the Salks. most people that would go for custom speakers probably have a different display than a crt. email Jim Salk and ask him about shielding. i'm sure he can set you up one way or another. his customer service reminds me of...

Which speakers for front & center upgrade?

the brands mentioned so far are all good. however, they represent a more or less lateral move. if you are upgrading, i say spend a little more and buy quality. we recently upgraded our 3 fronts with these: http://www.salksound.com/htshome.html for the $, they would be hard to beat. best, eric

Hanging speakers from cable or rod

jeremy, the PRO-LX5 throws a very wide soundfield (dipole ribbon tweeters) so i have them only a few inches from the ceiling , pointed at the listening area. i think our ceilings are 8',and they are near the walls, so they are way out of the way. best, eric

Hanging speakers from cable or rod

i have all 8 of our surround speakers (Optimus PRO-LX5)hung upside down from our ciling from swag hooks. after some experimentation, i used stainless steel wire. it's available at any hardware store. it's small diameter, flexible, yet very strong. best, eric

    Review of Salk HTS-MTM

for some reason the link did not copy well. i fixed it. it should take you directly there. incidentally, Jim Salk read my review and sent me an email to point out that the HTS-MTMs are relatively sensitive (90.5 db.) and were designed to be powered by most ht receivers. many ht speakers are in...

    Review of Salk HTS-MTM

Review of Salk HTS-MTM If you follow this board, then you may have seen my refferences to Jim Salk's beautiful custom speakers. in the future, i hope to buy one of Jim's Veracity designs for a dedicated music only system. however, my primary interest is in home theater. i have been...

    American Made Speakers

Jim Salk's drivers are from all over the world. my HTS-MTMs have Vifa midbass drivers (Europe) and AC pure ribbon tweeters (Asia, i think). does anyone custom make drivers? it would seem impractical for any except the very largest manufacturers. best, eric

    On-wall speaker advice sought

greg, the Salk HTS-MTMs can handle the room. they are large speakers with twin Vifa 7" midbass drivers and a Arum Canton G2si pure ribbon tweeter in each speaker. for that matter, you can order them with a xover customized for free standing. i have an SVS PB12-ultra/2 for the low end, but...

hi EricT, yes, i went with the HTS-MTMs in piano black. they are beautiful but heavy (40lb./each). after looking at several options, i chose the Parts Express Smarter Speaker Support for the wall mounts. these allow great flexibility in aiming the speakers, are easy to mount, and cost just a...

    On-wall speaker advice sought

i have these: http://www.salksound.com/htshome.html Jim Salk custom built them for my "on wall" plasma set up. you could get the front soundstage for about $2k, then add an SVS or HSU sub. fill in with cheap surrounds and upgrade them when you can. you will have a world class system that can...
