Someday I might get a multi-region player, but most of the movies I am interested in do come out in America in editions that satisfy me.
I heard about First Men in the Moon here on this forum in one of the Twilight Time threads. TT has all but confirmed that it's coming this year.
Any new word on these? I'm thrilled to hear that we will be getting Quatermass and the Pit on blu-ray soon. That's one of the biggest gaps in the U.S. science fiction catalog, in my opinion. Hopefully a Quatermass Xperiment/Quatermass 2 box isn't far behind! Along with Twilight Time hinting...
I second:
The Saragossa Manuscript
Fellini Satyricon
The Tenant
Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Eraserhead
The Devils
Also, Until the End of the World - European cut needs a stateside release badly.
If Anchor Bay still has an arrangement with Hammer, I wish they would do a Hammer Quatermass box with The Quatermass Xperiment, Enemy from Space and Five Million Years to Earth on it. Better yet, make it a Nigel Kneale/Hammer box and include The Abominable Snowman. I'd pay good money for that...
They have confirmed First Men in the Moon? That's wonderful! I only just saw it in the last few years (during an exhaustive and fun tour of old sci-fi movies) and it stood out as one of my very favorites. Could Twilight Time release more Nigel Kneale films? Anything such as Quatermass...
Very awesome indeed! I'm a little disappointed that Videodrome follows after stuff like Charade which I honestly never liked very much. But I'm keen to see Mr. Lawrence on Blu-ray for my first viewing and The Thin Red Line release is a dream come true!
That said, I would trade all of the...
These are all good candidates. Barry Lyndon is my favorite movie, The Duelists is a great Lyndon knockoff (I mean that in a good way) and 1492 would look amazing. I seem to recall the Ridley Scott was approached by HBO at some point about doing a director's cut of 1492 presented as a...
Hmm, is the listed running time of 100 minutes a typo? The "George Lucas Director's Cut" released a few years back (which I own) runs 88 minutes. Probably just a typo; I can't imagine George Lucas doing another cut so soon.
YES!!!!
The announcement of The Thin Red Line is something I've been waiting years for, but including Videodrome (?!?!!!), more Wes Anderson, and Seven Samurai makes this the best month of Criterion releases EVER in my book.
It's like they read my mind...
(Closes eyes and imagines Criterion...
Looks like we may have an explanation for the lack of a Special Edition/Director's Cut...

Now that it's cleared up, can Malick start thinking about re-releasing his masterpiece?
There's also a rumor that Leo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are remaking The Third Man, so that may have tangled the rights even further. A terrible idea just got worse, if you ask me.
And yeah, it's a bummer that Howard's End got the Blu-ray treatment. I wonder how many voters in that Amazon poll...
Does anyone else think that the Criterion hint from the newsletter today means that Fellini's 8 1/2 is their next Blu-ray release?
A great, great choice if you ask me. You can't go wrong with Fellini, and having him on Blu for Christmas makes me very very happy!
Barry Lyndon
The Thin Red Line (extended cut, please!)
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
I would love to see some of the important titles by David Lynch and Werner Herzog... Blue Velvet and Aguirre, the Wrath of God would be a lovely start.
Some great releases should result from this. Put me down for a copy of Suspiria on Blu. If Vivendi is smart they'll put that title on the fast-track for 2010.
Apparently Weinstein Co. isn't doing terribly well. They'd be wise to license Ran to Criterion and share in the profits. It would be a win-win for everybody. And The Quiet Duel was released a couple of years back on another label and, fine a film as it is, is hardly "major" Kurosawa.
But I'm...
We haven't seen the December slate, yet. Criterion can be pretty spectacular when they put their minds to it.
Don't Look Now was a very peculiar film. I'm not a huge Roeg fan -- at all -- but I'd give both of those flicks another shot with new transfers and Criterion-quality extras.
EDIT...
I just watched Gomorrah this afternoon and it's a pretty strong flick. Looking forward to revisiting it on Blu. I would have rather have Brazil, Days of Heaven, or some Fellini, but I'll take it.
Remember, Scott was approached to do an extended version, possibly for an HBO miniseries broadcast. I'm pretty keen on a 1492 DVD, myself, but I have faith that our patience will be rewarded.
Scott is very busy right now filming Robin Hood and he has Brave New World and Alien 5 shooting...
I'd expect Days of Heaven from Criterion, but I wouldn't complain if Paramount beat them to it. (Having The New World on Blu in September is a great start, but I'd love to see all of Malick's work on Blu. Badlands was an early DVD title, I'm bummed it hasn't come out yet. And there has to be...
Paramount would make a lot of people happy with Blu releases of Once Upon a Time in the West, The Elephant Man, Sunset Blvd., Chinatown and Apocalypse Now. They could pretty much take the rest of the year off after that. I'd probably buy all of them if it didn't break the bank...
Does anybody know what the title hinted at in the new Criterion newsletter from this after was? I haven't been able to guess any of them since Days of Heaven, and that was an easy one...
These are two titles I'm looking forward to as well. Elephant Man will look great, and if I'm not mistaken, would be Lynch's first Blu-Ray title - something that is FAR overdue. There's a Blu-Ray disc of TEM being released overseas, soon. Hopefully, the R1 counterpart will follow quickly. I...
I'm very glad to hear the Criterion Blus are doing so well. I haven't purchased any yet, but I've been eying Bottle Rocket and Last Year at Marienbad will be great! I've only ever seen it on letterboxed VHS and I turned it off because it was impossible to watch. A BR release is simply great...
