I'd like to hear what Robert Harris thinks of the 70mm theatrical re-release, all the issues I've highlighted are confirmed by various friends who have seen the film theatrically in different parts of the world (me in Australia, Germany, USA all in 70mm), so unless there's different 'Nolan'...
This seems really odd then, that tear in the first few scenes marks this as the same print I've seen, and those issues I've discussed were backed by other viewers in a New York showing... so there's either different prints going out, or I'm rather more picky than most :-)
Crushed blacks, blown highlights and conspicuous grain in parts have nothing to do projection issues, I've seen other 70mm presentations at this cinema and they were stunning, it's the quality of the print, Your mileage might vary, but I am rather picky about this particular movie, and the...
Nothing to do with digital Vs film, I wish it was film! Just a much better print... in fact the 2001 Blu-ray I viewed last night looks better than this ('unrestored', but oddly sound remixed) print
The new 'Nolan' print being exhibited is terrible quality. I’ve seen 2001 three times in 70mm, and once in 35mm (3 of those screenings before 1999 when Kubrick died, and one screening in 2001 so all 'director approved' prints, knowing how finicky and involved Kubrick was with his own film...
I've just come back from a 4K screening of LOA and I was floored by the presentation. Not a fan of digital screenings at all as I usually find them too dark, lacking in detail and density but this was not only the best digital screening I've ever seen but it actually surpassed my memories of the...
Has anyone seen a 4K screening and can comment on the quality? Otherwise I might just post back on sunday after I see it, Mr Harris's 70mm original restoration will take some beating...
You've probably covered this a thousand times Robert (so feel free to point me to the thread) but what are the cut scenes still extant? I heard that when you were restoring Lawrence Lean actually made some cuts would this be the missing scenes?
So true, I've just been to see the re-released Titanic 3D and the 2 girls sitting next to us obviously hadn't been fed in a week because they proceeded to eat for the full 3 hours plus of the movie. First it was BBQed chicken (no kidding) , then popcorn and chips, then MacDonalds, god knows...
I tested the Pal Joey disc on my projector and I take back any quibbles regarding image posted earlier, transfer is absolutely gorgeous and BTW so is the transfer on Picnic, both extremely filmlike with a fine sprinkling of grain. No problems with soundtrack either except for Sinatra's obvious...
Yes I agree it's not a transfer issue, I always thought that Sinatra was singing this 'live' to film as it's a great live take but he must have been miming to one done earlier. Give Nick Redman my best and congratulations on setting up Twilight Time, it's a goldmine for cinefiles. Almost spilled...
Hi Tony, just picked up Picnic and Pal joey, been waiting for these to come to Blu for awhile, Twilight Time is going to get a bit of my custom if they keep releasing quality releases of this caliber. Yes I've been around for awhile, I usually just enjoy the erudite discussions rather than the...
4 months and still beta testing FW doesn't augur well, Oppo have stopped manufacturing the BDP83 so we can only hope the firmware is still going to be updated.
Yes and apart from fixing the general blurriness and giant grain of the theatrical presentation Cameron also properly color corrected it. Gone is the general blue haze of the image and he's also 'fixed' the rushed special effects, I still remember the 'blue lines' around spaceships etc... which...
Maybe Cameron should have done Scott's transfer as well as 'Aliens' looks stellar. I've seen both movies theatrically as well as in their various video incarnations and while 'Alien' barely matches up to its original theatrical presentation, 'Aliens' far surpasses it and it's the real revelation...
