There are several DVD releases of Universal owned Paramount films in R2 not available in R1. These include I think some Dietrich and several Mitchell Leisen films with the likes of Olivia de Havilland and Claudette Colbert. Annoyingly, PRACTICALLY YOURS is still unavailable in any region or...
This one seems to have disappeared. A pity, as I hoped for a second volume (or some other excuse) for a release of MAN'S CASTLE and the Sturges-scripted CHILD OF MANHATTAN.
It's one of my favourite silents. I also wish they'd consider taking SHOW PEOPLE out of the archives (ideally in a double bill with THE PATSY, but would be way too much to ask).
I am not sure where you got the $100.00, but Amazon.co.uk currently sells the PAL DVD either for £12.99 (about $20) or £6.77 (around $10.00), depending on the edition (both by Fox) plus postage to the US.
Apologies if this has been mentioned. Today browsing a FNAC in Portugal found that a handful of Fox titles have been released recently under a banner of rare titles. What seems the full list is below.
Most have been available elsewhere in R1 and/or R2, but at least MY COUSIN RACHEL I'm not...
I haven't use them, but have you tried the international version? i.e. the +1 or 001. For example, if you are calling a London number in the UK it starts with 020 71234567. If you need to call it from abroad, it's 004420 71234567 or +4420 71234567 - note that one zero is gone. 0044 or +44 is the...
Definitely wouldn't mind owing FRENCHMAN'S CREEK, TAKE A LETTER DARLING, KITTY and a good copy of LADY IN THE DARK. The others I have from Italian or Spanish R2 releases, but I would double dip for the other 4. Or perhaps THE MATING SEASON. Of course a Pre-Code vol 2 with loads of Miriam...
If the cartoons are your main interest, as opposed to the package, volume 3 has been release in R2 in France and Germany, in what seems to be general release. The DVDs should be the same except they don't have the tin, nor booklet/postcards.
Just caught CHILD OF MANHATTAN at a screening at the cinematheque in Lisbon. The print looked really good and the film is a gem - based on a Preston Sturges' play. Would love to see that released.
More screwball comedies like THIS THING CALLED LOVE which has been restored already, as per here, and anything with the likes of Barbara Stanwyck, Melvyn Douglas, Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne, Carole Lombard and Jean Arthur that may still have lying around. I would gladly get a third and fourth...
You can always try the Spanish FNAC. My experiences with them have been good, though I send them to addresses in Portugal which makes it all much easier.
An Italian distributor called Teodora film released a box set of Mitchell Leisen films and I have mentioned in another thread here before. I'm still hoping that Carlotta in France picks something similar and releases the two de Havilland films.
Even assuming that they'll ship internationally, considering Universal's track record to license titles or release them in R2 I think I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope the titles they own I want (mostly from their Paramount library) will make it to a pressed DVD that won't cost me $20...
Why was still harbouring hopes for some of these as DVD releases, is beyond me. Surely PENTHOUSE could have made it to a Forbidden Hollywood set (especially if it's one of the most requested MGM titles) and THE MORTAL STORM deserves be released somewhere... And I still can't buy them, even if I...
Since there is a good R2 DVD of REMEMBER THE NIGHT in Italy that came out earlier this year, I doubt that's more than a coincidence. Moreover, the box set that included the film, also included NO TIME FOR LOVE which Universal is releasing as part of the Claudette Colbert collection. So I bet...
