Which has been the best decade for music?

I agree and would add Roxy Music, Brian Eno, CCR, Split Enz, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Cockney Rebel/Steve Harley, David Bowie, Patti Smith, Kinks (yes some of it was pretty good), Dylan (some of his was more than pretty good), Captain Beefheart, Hawkwind, The Jam, John Cale, John...

Anyone listen to Van Der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill?

I just got 'H to He who am the only one' and while it took me 3 listens to get into it I can say now it was worth it. The music can be tedious at times but the vocals are damn spectacular. Peter has been called the Jimi Hendrix of vocalist for good reason. The thing I don't understand is that in...

Ooh Whoo Hoo Hoo - THE RENTALS Appreciation Thread

I used to share a newspaper route with Matt Sharp in '82 back in Arlington, VA. I remember him liking the Stones and Billy Squier a lot. We had the route taken away from us cause we had too many complaints about late or no deliveries. Funny thing is that I didn't know we was in the Rentals till...

    Russian music download sites

Never underestimate the hubris and greed of record companies: "Under that old rubrik, the record company deducts fees for the kind of extra costs they used to incur when records were pressed on vinyl, including packaging charges, restocking costs and losses due to breakage." which of...

Need a good 600+ CD rack

Thanks Parker but now I'm leaning away from metal racks. I've found a couple local bookshelf makers near the local college campus that make custom racks out of solid pine. About $160 for a 6ft h x 3ft w CD bookcase that hold ~1000 CD should do the trick. Plus its unfinished so I can paint it any...

Some big news and rumors on The Police

Which documentary is that? I actually thought they would despise the idea of working together again or has Sting's ego deflated to the point where he is once again a normal human being?

    Russian music download sites

Seems to me paying a little over a dollar for a complete album is not possible when trying to account for artist royalties, overhead of the site, record co.'s cut, etc. On the positive side I would imagine as far as prosecution of illegal downloaders is concerned this would not be the first...

What boxsets are you listening to?

So many to choose from these days and many are quite well done. I just got the T-Rex - 20th Century Superstar. Quite a good overview it is that shows the transition from Dylan/Tolkien inspired folkie to chart topper to has-been. Recommended. I'm thinking of picking up The Jam - Direction...

    why aren't monitors more popular?

I find cable/satellite a really bad deal especially considering that Sturgeon's rule (90% of everything is crud) applies. I guess that's why I do OTA plus Blockbuster DVDs by mail. What's even worse there are only about 4-6 channels in HD with satellite for their normal service - hardly worth it...

Queen's "Greatest Hits" biggest selling album in UK history

I never thought of Queen as four talented individuals. Maybe I haven't heard enough of the non-radio airplay songs for that to come across. But I would have to ask: Are they more talented than the original lineup of the Who? Were they beter live than the Who? I have serious doubts unless I see...

Polaroid FLM-4034B 40" LCD will be on sale

Actually they were out of stock in their main wharehouse(s) but each store had their own stock which is not available via the 800 numbers. Makes sense otherwise you would have masses of people waiting hours in line for nothing - not good for PR. I apologize if I mislead anyone. BTW great set...

Queen's "Greatest Hits" biggest selling album in UK history

Its such an unjust world that Queen have such mass acclaim and the more talented Mael Brothers of Sparks are confined to obscurity. I also think Ray Davies is a better songwriter than Lennon, McCartney, Springsteen, etc. so I'm probably in the minority there too.

Polaroid FLM-4034B 40" LCD will be on sale

or so I've heard for ~$1k at CC this Friday. http://www.polaroid.com/global/detai...bmLocale=en_US My viewing distance is 9 feet. My sources will be a nice new antenna and Netflix, with standard Sony SACD/DVD, and 5.1 Onkyo/Wharfedales/Hsu. What do y'all think of it? P.S. I've been...

    Help me with David Bowie

I think the yourmusic.com is the way to go - most of Bowie's stuff for $6.00 each delivered. My top 5 Bowie albums are: Heroes Station to Station Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust Low Ziggy Stardust (ST) Also I wouldn't be so concerned with getting the XXth anniversary doubles as the...

Compression techniques ruining modern music (article)

http://www.austin360.com/arts/conten...9/28cover.html It's hard to believe that stuff like this actually works, but I think consumers take too much for granted. Makes me wish that we still had the likes of Stereo Review around to really analyze recordings.

    watch *rock* concert DVDs?

I don't think its the same one. The one I saw is called Lil' Beethoven / Live in Stockholm and is from 2005. I see cduniverse.com has one called Live In London (DVD Audio) - maybe that's the one you have. I'll also endorse your description of the band, the Giants were quirky and fun.

    watch *rock* concert DVDs?

The Isle of Wight DVDs are pretty cool. I prefer watching them over the Woodstock stuff. Even performers I'm not totally thrilled about like ELP and Moody Blues were quite spectacular. I love the Ween Live in Chicago DVD. Really great soloing and song selection. If you like Sparks(think...

    Question Re: Bmg Cd Club

I'm new at this and confused regarding fulfilling my membership. Right now they are offering me buy 1, get 2 free, then unlimited at 2.99 each plus S/H. If I just got three CDs would that fulfill my membership obligation or do I just have to place an order for a solitary CD at full price? The...
