Thanks Bob and all, That explains why my old receiver (that died) had extra speaker connections for the sub. I just bought a new of speaker wire, sounds like I'll need it. Of course, the easiest thing might be to buy a new powered sub;)
My ONKYO 601 has a single RCA plug for the subwoofer connection but my sub has two normal binding post connections. How do I connect? Do I have to build a cable? Thanks,
Bryan, I would recommend you hold off buying a HDTV tuner for the time being. You are half right about the phase in period for HDTV OTA broadcasts. The idea is that by 2008 all OTA broadcasts are to be in HD and soon after that the current NTSC broadcasts will end. The broadcasters are...
I have crammed wires under the baseboard method as well. It works OK but the problem is how to get the wire up to the surrounds without coming around the baseboard. You can't run it into the wall because of the baseplate. Any ideas on how to do that without the wire showing? The best site...
Derek, It is almost impossible to run wire through existing construction without cutting holes in the wallboard and drilling through every single stud. Since they're only 16" apart, that's a lot of holes and patching. I believe the easiest way is to hide the wiring under crown molding...
No body asked me...But, this wiring sounds like it was done for the alarm system not surround sound. They use a cat 5 type for the alarm. It's looped because the alarm system is a single circuit. If the place it is coming out of the wall is high up in the corner, it's probably for an IR sensor...
I'm about to reinstall my HT after a move. My existing speaker wires still look fine (no kinks or cuts in the insulation etc.) but the wires are over 10 years old. Should I replace just to be safe or is that over kill?
Newbie question, In setting up my new Onkyo 601 receiver, I set speaker size and number, distance, crossover, db etc. no problem. The speakers sound fine on the test menu, but with DVD, VHS and TV sources, I get good front sound but no sound at all from the two surround speakers. I've tried...
Wayne, Thanks a bunch for the advice. I've enjoyed reading your other posts as well. You're a real pro and an asset to the forum. :emoji_thumbsup: Thanks, Barry
Wayne, Cabling should be OK, I can run through the crawl space. What about the remote control of the receiver, VCR etc. Is there a piece of gear you know of that will relay all functions? Also, concur the TV above the fireplace is too high for good viewing. Since, the interior decorators...
"Your post is a little unclear. Are you saying you want to put the equipment in the closet at the back of the room? It sounds like you want to put speakers and a sat receiver there." Wayne, I would like to put everything but the TV, DTIVO and the speakers in the closet. Doable? Barry
Has anyone ever tried to remote the components for their HT? Or, does anyone know of any reference material on the subject? Anyone have any experience remoting w/ the UnQ type of "smart" wiring? I am moving into an new house w/ UnQ home network star wiring but my huge, 3 piece home...
