    Books you've read in 2010

I love all of the Ender books. "Speaker for the Dead" is one of my favorite books. As for the books I read this year I have been rereading some of my favorites, making attempts at reading books that I have never finished and reading some new stuff. I read "World Without End" by Ken Follet. It...

What was the last "Classic" movie made? (Pre-1970 era)

Ben, I like the term "Innocent Classicism." Is that something you made up or is that an acedemic term? I think that is what my question was driving at; the innocence that seems no longer to be allowed. Your example is perfect. Can you imagine "West Side Story" being released today? It would be a...

Can I use my Laptop as my Blu-ray player?

The one I got already let me play on my TV. So, that is one hurdle. But, i haven't confirmed if it really will play 5.1 audio. Something that is labeled as an "Entertainment" laptop should do that.

Can I use my Laptop as my Blu-ray player?

FYI, At COSTCO I bought a HP Pavillion dv6-1253cl. 16 inch display, 500 GB, HDMI output, a Core 2 Duo and Blu-Ray. It was $600 including a 2 year warranty. I got it for work. It is just the right size for what I need to do. I have had it for two weeks now and have played a few minutes of one...

What resolution should I set my laptop when it is attached to my TV

Joe, I always love your answers. Actually, I do have a CRT HDTV. It is a "Mitsubishi Medallion HDTV 1080 Integrated." (Integrated????) It has 6 inch guns. The manual is a bit vague about the resolution. But, I think it says that using the digital input 1080i is the resolution that is supported...

What resolution should I set my laptop when it is attached to my TV

I have a 1080i TV. I have attached it to my TV via a HDMI cable. What resolution should it be set at? I have been playing around and have it at 1280x720. It seems OK, but the text is still blurry. Netflix looks great. Thanks

How can I tell if my notebook has digital audio out?

I just bought a HP Pavilion dv6-1253cl Notebook. It is labeled as an "Entertainment Notebook PC" and has a blu-ray drive. It has a DVI output as well. I know that it works on my TV just fine. My reciever only has digital optical input and digital cable input. No DVI or HDMI. (It is a 5 year old...

Can I use my Laptop as my Blu-ray player?

I am going to buy a laptop soon, and I also need a blu-ray player. So, why not combine the two? Is it worthwhile money-wise? I figure I need to add a blu-ray player and a decent audio card. Anything else? Thanks.

    Surround speakers aren't working?

Funny you mention that one. My last DVD player was the upconverting OPPO that was their first product. When I bought it, a $200 upconverting DVD player was a great deal. I liked it. If it didn't stop working I would have stuck with it. It lasted 5 or 6 years. I guess I shouldn't complain.

    Surround speakers aren't working?

NUTS!!!! I was testing a variety of options with my Fantasia 2000 DVD. It was just there and I put it in. It has a set-up feature that is in the menus. NOT part of a movie. Anyways, I tested it with PCM and Bitstream on and the surrounds didn't work. I think those tracks are associated with...

    Surround speakers aren't working?

The manual states that the surrounds don't work with SD DVDs. That is why I was wondering if that was normal for other Blu Ray players.

    Surround speakers aren't working?

I just installed my new Samsung 1590c blu-ray player. So, I put in my old calibration disk. Is it normal that my surround speakers don't work. I have an old Onkyo 6.1 system. So far, it has been great. It doesn't have a HDMI interface, so I hooked it up with the DVD player via an optical cable...

I have a question, and I want to talk to an engineer at Vutec. I can't get through to one. Does anybody know somebody who works there? Thanks.

What was the last "Classic" movie made? (Pre-1970 era)

The Good, the Bad and The Ugly is a great one. I was thinking more along the line of the way a film was directed. For example, In "Lawrence" there was a lot of fighting, but very little blood shown. That was just the way it was done in those days. Same thing with "The Good...." As great as 2001...

What was the last "Classic" movie made? (Pre-1970 era)

I was watching "Lawrence of Arabia" and it sturck me that this might have been the last "Classic" movie of that era. "Lawrence" was made in 1962. The following year "Cleopatra" came out. That was a legendary disaster. As far as I can recall, the next epic movie that came out that has had any...

*** Official STAR TREK (2009) Discussion Thread

Oh my, oh my, the logic holes are huge. "Hey Dummy, just use the red matter to destroy the star BEFORE it goes NOVA...." Can anybody tell me why a MINING ship has such powerful weapons? The drill made sense, but being able to battle a starship? I don't care if it was from the future. If you take...

    Fast Food Foul-ups

Jay, did you write for Sienfeld? That is a funny story. A friend of mine owns a few Dunkin Donuts. His definition of a good employee is one that doens't steal too much. He has two cameras pointed at each register and they still try to steal. He had one employee who charged the senior...

Disney World: what should I know and do?

Shows you what I know. Check the calender on the website for the hours that day. I travel with my three young boys. FWIW, I liked the All Star Resorts. They are a clean place to sleep in the park. The pools are fun, the food court is cheesy and the grounds are fun. It is not luxury, just...

Disney World: what should I know and do?

The week following Labor Day will be less crowded. Personally, that is what I would do if I was travelling without children. That time of year, it is always hot. Always carry some bottled water with you. Also, buy a poncho offsite in case it rains. The ponchos in the park are $8. You feel kind...

    superbowl, and i don't care!

Well, I feel the same way this year. I really don't care. For so many Superbowls, the best part was the commercials. This year, it may be a real game. I don't even have to watch the game. I can catch the good commercials on-line. Although, I may still watch parts of it.

    Being There

Great movie. Funny, but not too many laughs. The first time I saw this movie I was 10 years old. I must have gone into the wrong theater. I didn't get it one bit. I took the movie literally. I was very saw walking out of the theater. Anyways, years later I watched it with a lot more...

If I have 1080i input only, will the 1080p players work?

Thanks... Personally, I am not a big believer in the use of 1080p as anything other than a marketing tool. Until movies/TV shows are produced in 1080i, I will be just fine. Now, for 3D video games and TV, there may be something there. But, I am not holding my breath. As it is, my biggest WOW...

If I have 1080i input only, will the 1080p players work?

I have a 4 year old HD TV that is 1080i. (55 inch Mitsu Rear Projection) I keep on look at the specs of the Blu Ray players and they all have 1080p signals. I can't tell from the specs if there is a 1080i signal as well. Do the Blu Ray players have 1080i output as another option usually? What...

    What is a Supercard

Thanks. He is a sharp kid. Fortunetly, he has a good heart and doesn't use his brains to get in trouble (well, too much trouble). Useful information. I couldn't get a straight answer from him about how the games got onto the supercard. Now I kind of understand.
