HTF Contest: Win an Epson HC 8700 1080P projector courtesy of Epson and ProjectorPeople.com!

A couple of years ago, my brother purchased a DVD/projector combo. It was pretty simple and straightforward and gave a 480p image. Being an HD newbie at the time, I was pretty skeptical that it would produce anything worthwhile. Our first test was projecting "The Empire Strikes Back" onto a bare...

Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth: Official Discussion Thread

I just got back from watching this, and I must say that I'm speechless. I haven't felt this way about a movie in a very long time. Will watch this again soon. Juan

    Dune HD-DVD reviews?

Camper, I got this the day it came out, and I have to agree that this title has been ignored with all the Superman discussion. Dune looks great in hd. Definite improvement over the sd version. It is still a bit soft, probably a limitation of the print, but still has lots of detail. No noise or...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

I've been monitoring this thread for a while now. Interesting arguments on both sides. I was originally in the "anti" new versions, but had changed my mind until I found out about the tampering with the John Williams soundtrack (I'm a huge Williams fan). At this point I decided to hold off...

Best use of music in a movie

Empire Strikes Back-last third of the movie (from Luke's arrival in Cloud City onward). Raiders of the Lost Ark-the approach and escape from the Mayan temple and the map room sequence. LOTR:ROTK-the ride of the Rohirim. Heat-music by Moby at the end. Braveheart-secret wedding...

    *** Official SPIDER-MAN 2 Review Thread

Saw this one last night, and for the first time, I can truly say that Superman (the first one) has finally met its match. Even Danny Elfman's score was much improved over the first Spiderman. This is high praise from me, considering that Superman is my favorite comic book movie. I guess it helps...

*** Official KILL BILL VOLUME 1 Review Thread

I saw Kill Bill: Vol 1 last week and think that it is incredible. I was kind of non chalant upon my initial viewing, but as time went on, this one really started to resonate with me. It just flows so well, at a very poetic level. Some have criticized (hope I spelled this right) Tarantino for...

DVD Review HTF Review: Schindler's List (Highly Recommended!)

i just finished watching this dvd. WOW! this had been my first time viewing this film. i never saw it in the theater, but the transfer appears to be quite good. very detailed. the sound is also very good. no activity in the surrounds and very little sub action, but i figure that was to be...

    Have a Denon 4802. How can I do 6.1?

If you go to the system set up menu, go to "speaker configuration" and there should be an option to select whether you want one or two speakers for your rear channel. Juan

    Howard Shore versus John Williams

Horner may possibly be in a 20 year "phase", but he has certainly had his share of highlights (Star Trek II, Braveheart, Titanic). Juan

    Steve Hoffman site.....gone???

Lance, Probably for the challenge of just getting away with it. I don't think that it's some sort of crusade, just some guy(s)/gal(s) trying to test anything they can get their little grubby hands on. Juan

Yamaha, HK, Denon, Pioneer Elite, Im going to purchase on sat.

Jesse, What kind of receiver do you have now? The reason why I ask is because I currently own a 4802 and the 3801 (predecessor to the 3802 and 3803) prior to her (she's my precious girl:D). If you can get the 4802, do it man! When I first got her, I remember thinking that there was no...

    X-box and 1080i

That is totally software dependent. From what I understand, it is capable of displaying 1080i and 720p only with video games, but not DVD's. And even then, that depends on what resolution that particular game is capable of, as most will only display 480p. Juan

    Howard Shore versus John Williams

Jason, I also agree with you as far as the LOTR trilogy is concerned. Shore's work is great (I have The Two Towers playing right now). My question is in response to a thread that I had read somewhere (damned if I can remember where) where many were calling Howard Shore the new king of modern...

Best Picture Quality Ever (SEABISCUIT and others)

You know, I read in an older volume of Hugh Heffner's journal for men (Playboy), that Eva Mendez had a minor nude scene in Training Day. Well I had to invetigate for myself :D! What I wasn't prepared for was the image quality (of the movie guys!). I had read in the yearly image/sound awards of...

    Howard Shore versus John Williams

Thomas, You know it's funny that you mention Hook, because I was watching that particular movie the other day and the first thing that jumped out at me was the score (go figure). I guess that I have developed a personal bias toward Hook, as I've read that Episode II has what is in effect the...

Is multichannel-ness holding back hi-rez audio?

I prefer that they provide both surround and stereo mixes on both DVD-A and SA-CD titles as well as a hybrid "redbook" layer in order to provide geater flexibility and transportability (if that is a word). As far as the surround question; I believe that surround is a major selling point to non...

    Howard Shore versus John Williams

It's not just the quantity, but the quality as well.:) What really blows me away about Williams is his list of really good movie soundtracks: Jaws Close Encounters of the Third Kind Superman Star Wars Empire Strikes Back (my personal fav) Raiders of the Lost Ark E.T. (his last truly geat...

    Moody Blues coming to 5.1SACD

I only hope that they don't overdo the surround mix. I'm not too fond of the DTS mixes, as they are IMO, way too aggresive. I do agree that while a bit on the "older" side, their music is perfectly suited for the surround sound treatment (if done right). Juan

    Howard Shore versus John Williams

O.K., I forgot what thread I read it in, but somebody had mentioned that ITO, Howard Shore was the new king of "modern" movie soundtracks. I myself am really big on John Williams and that comment caused me to go back and listen to some of his older stuff, namely "Star Wars", and discovered that...
