Hey guys. Sorry, I should have made myself more clear. I know the pros and cons of stretching and have got my TV calibrated down from factory settings. As far as 2001, I was just saying that the wider AR was going to take more advantage of a 16x9 than any of the others. I just wanted to see what...

So I just placed my order for the Stanley Kubrick collection, when it hit me - the only movie in the whole bit that's going to work well with my 57" 16x9 RPTV is 2001. What do you guys do when you have to watch a 1.33:1 movie on a 16x9 screen? I hate to distort the image, but I'm worried...

Ed, sorry, I should have clarified. It wasn't the single shot that was doing it, it was the broadside barrage, which has some -25db strong stuff all the way down to 12hz, and -35db stuff all the way down to 0hz.
Believe me Ming, I noticed. I was bottoming my SVS 20-39PC+ on that cannon shot, until I realized my SS-filter was set to 12hz. People told me that it's unlikely there was much

I've had this disc a week, thanks to that early EBGames mishap.. if you're out of the know, they just got sued by New Line for breaching contract. My copy got here by 1-day mail on the very day they filed. Whew! Anyway, I've had a chance to play it a couple of times through, me being an LoTR...
Minor update.. I found that, while Master and Commander was hitting highs of 110-115db, other discs such as LoTR: Two Towers, Matrix Revolutions, etc.. were considerably underpowered with the reduced gain, at normal listening levels. This goes back to how much I just LOVE the discrepency...
Well, the Avia test tones are 10db undercooked, or softer, compared to standard test tones. You need to calibrate to 85db as opposed to 75db with Avia. That may be accounting for why you find them to be "better sounding".
Everything I've ever heard has been to use a disc with test tones, as that is a closer simulation to what you'll be hearing on a DVD. You want the sound to be produced as a DVD's audio track would be, so the audio passing from the player to the receiver and out to the speakers is neccessary.
This sort of resembles our living room as it used to be, with either of the rear speakers being right behind you. Our solution was to simply redesign the entire room around the TV/home theater, because frankly that was what we were using the room for more than anything else. Now people are...
On my setup, it's more than a simple overall volume boost. Offhand I can't remember, but there are some 1-2db changes between the L&R versus the center, and the fronts vs. the rears. On DVE, you simply hit the audio button on the DVD player and switch to DTS to calibrate.
Well, surprising results to say the least! First, I re-calibrated using DVE to a 75db reference level on all speakers. The SS filter (not to mention the phase dial) made no apparent difference to the SPL meter on the DVE subwoofer tone, so I put it on the standard 20hz with no ports blocked...
Haven't had the chance to run through some tuning port tests yet Ron, but I'll give it a go and see how she sounds. I'm using a Radioshack analog SPL. My major problem is that I've been told the DVE woofer tone is off by an argueable amount of decibels, so I have no real way to calibrate the sub...
Er, a note about Video Essentials. I wouldn't use that disc to calibrate your SVS. I have it, and have since learned from others on this forum that the subwoofer tuning signal on it is messed up, by a good many decibels. Try Avia or your receiver's signal.
Thanks a lot guys (especially the hard-working SVS guys) for taking the time. Apparently home theater has managed to make a moron of me yet again. SS filter set to 20hz has completely taken care of the bottoming issue. :emoji_thumbsup: Of course, now the bass is not -quite- as impressive due...
Okay, possible problem here? I just made a double-check of the settings, and lo-and-behold, my subsonic filter was set to 12hz. I don't think I've ever touched that since getting it in the mail. I've got a 20-39PC+, so I'm guessing I should have had it set at 20hz. Would this be making a...
Ugh. Thanks for the replies guys. My PC+ is only about two months old, and already I need an upgrade, eh? Wish I had just gone with the PB2+ to begin with now. Seems like that'd take care of it more than another 6 decibels might. Not sure I'll have the cash to do it for quite a while though...
Well, lack of info because I've been through the whole calibration/room size stuff before. This was more just getting my frustration out there. Anyway, room size is 4700 cubic feet, plus a large opening to a kitchen. I'm guessing you'll all just tell me to buy another PC+ because I'm expecting...
So I absolutely love my PC+ SVS. But I often end up loathing it at the same time. I'll make this short and sweet. This is what usually ends up happening. Here I am, watching Master and Commander, completely blown away by the bass I'm getting, and on the VERY last gunblast, the sub bottoms...
I had the same decision to make, and I finally ended up going with the PC+. Frankly, I wish I had gotten the PB2+. The PC+ is an enormous amount of power, but now I just want more. Like Joe says, go PC+ without a second thought.
Honestly, I pushed my PC+ harder than I ever will on a normal basis the first week I had it, and I kind of regret it now. I bottomed it out once, which didn't damage it, but I wish I hadn't. I have the sub calibrated to way above reference right now, and if it was any higher, it would sound...
I'll just tell you what everyone else is going to tell you right off the bat - drop everything and go buy an SPL meter and a calibration disk (Avia). You need to properly calibrate the sub to reference levels and then see what's going on. I'm guesing you'll probably end up adjusting the gain a...
