Universal in May: Cinema Classics Wave 2, more franchise collections.

Am I one of the only ones excited for the Pirates of the Golden Age Collection, even if it is a blatant Pirates of the Caribbean tie-in? The collection has an Errol Flynn/Maureen O'Hara pirate movie in it, even if it is a somewhat over-the-hill Errol. And it has a Donald O'Connor pirate musical...

    Commercials that just irritate you....

A recent commercial that I really hate is for a car company. Two kids are sitting in a minivan watching the DVD player and hanging out. Their dad comes and tells them he's just finished a treehouse for them after a long period of hard work. The kids ask if the treehouse has all the cushy...

    MST3K Vol. 11 is coming...but....

The line-up is a little disappointing to me personally, but I'm glad that this is finally coming out. And the mention of future volumes and intriguing extras is good news. It seems like these are all public domain titles, which should prevent legal troubles.

Do you think Bold And The Beautiful and others will see the light of..DVD?

The almost total absence of any soap-related DVDs (I think ABC released a soap wedding compilation a few years back) remains a mystery to me. Sure, the audience isn't huge, but you can't tell me that with all the obscure shows that have been released that some company wouldn't snatch at the...

    Sword/Sandal/Biblical Epics missing on DVD

Land of the Pharaohs is also coming in the same set as Colossus of Rhodes, though releasing them as part of a "Cult Camp Classics" set denotes a certain lack of respect. And Quo Vadis was announced as a future film release during the last Warner Bros. chat. My hope is that the success of 300 and...

    Regional TV Blockages

You can't really blame them, can you? Doctor Who will probably be sending its new season over to the U.S. via SciFi Network and it would hardly be in their interests for international viewers to see the episodes months before. The Dutch example is a little stranger as I can't see what outlet in...

Why are studios biased in favor of African American shows from the 70s?

I think it is because the 70s African American shows have broad audience appeal, unlike today when shows with predominantly black casts unfortunately seem much more marginal. Plus, most of the shows mentioned have been continually rerun, so they can gain new fans. As a result, they probably have...

    Most surprising DVD release

This is a region two release, but it certainly surprised me to see the bizarre and obscure Saturday morning cartoon The Little Clowns of Happy Town out on DVD in the UK.

Companion Books for TV on DVD series

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide is pretty funny and a decent guide to the early years of the show (it doesn't cover seasons seven and up, but the official website does have entries for those shows). If you're a fan, it is definitely worth buying. Also...

O.K. Universal, where are the next releases for..

The weird thing about Miami Vice is that the first season was Universal's number one best-seller for the year it came out- an article a few months ago confirmed that. The second season probably did less, but it is hard to imagine the fall-off was so severe that it wouldn't allow for future...

The new & improved "What 5 tv shows do you want released on dvd?"

Three that may well be released in the future: Family Ties Beauty and the Beast Land of the Giants Two that I don't have much hope for: Batman VH1's I Love the 80s (Very very unlikely due to rights issues)

Disney's True Life Adventures due December!

Look again, Marco. Behind the True-Life Cameras is included in Volume 2. These releases look really good. I just wish they weren't limited edition. Buying all four in a short amount of time will be an expensive task, especially with the Treasures releases coming out at the same time, unless...

    Gates of Fire and 300....

I think that Gates of Fire is in some far corner of development hell. I first heard of the project around the time of that article (2000) and absolutely nothing has come of it. With 300 coming out, I think it may be dead. But at least we have 300. When I saw early pictures with Gerard...

How accurate is my "In Memoriam" concept for the 2007 Oscars?

I think that all of the names that you mentioned will make it into the In Memoriam section, even if I had to look up a couple to determine their significance. I like this part of the Oscars as well. An additional question would be who will "win" the unofficial contest for which dead celebrity...

How popular is your last name?

Mormino doesn't rank, which hardly shocks me. A whole branch of the family had their name changed to "Marmino" when entering the U.S. because the customs person didn't spell the name right.

Star Trek: The Animated Series on 3/15?

The frustrating thing about Paramount's pricing system for Star Trek is that they really need to be using the DVDs to gain new fans for the franchise instead of leaching off their longtime fans. This is especially so of the original series since a rebooted film version is being made. A cheaper...

    Finally bought FIREFLY!

Direct to DVD might be the best option for continuing Firefly. If similar deals can be made for shows like Babylon 5 and Futurama, I don't see why this couldn't work. Even if it was set entirely on the ship or on a few sets with few special effects, the fans would still be happy and buy.

    Without a Trace Second Season?

This show was the real headscratcher of the Warner TV chat to me. If a modern-day show that often ranks in the top five of all shows can't get past a first season release, then what hope do any of Warners' dramas have? Since other regions have subsequent seasons out, it does make you wonder what...

Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

It could be a good sign if the movie is owned by Warners. They won't have much left in terms of horror product after their Halloween stuff comes out this year, so perhaps they will turn to their TV movies.

Coming soon...A live action "Year Without A Santa Claus"...

Some new casting on this project to relate. Delta Burke will be Mrs. Claus. And the Miser Brothers will be played by Chris Elliott (Heat Miser) and Michael McKean (Snow Miser). Sounds like a fun project.

Hart to Hart: Season 2 on it's way!!

Good to know that the show hasn't been abandoned. I don't know if there have been any changes at Sony in their TV DVD department, but they seem to be releasing more later seasons of shows recently. Hopefully it shows a new commitment to completing seasons.

    Emmy Nominations 2006

What I meant by saying the Oscars are more sensible is that most people who are into films can do a good job of predicting what films will get nominated and win and the rationale behind it all. Even when surprises occur, like the Crash Picture victory, it isn't hard to figure out why. But the...

    Emmy Nominations 2006

I think Two and A Half Men got in because it is the most watched sitcom on the air now. With the sitcom genre in such a bad state, the voters probably wanted to showcase a program that the public actually supports. I don't see how anyone can truly get into the Emmy system. They make the same...

    Manimal ever on DVD??

It likely depends on who owns the show. If it is in the hands of one of the major studios, I doubt that it will get a release. But a smaller distributor might bring it out someday as a niche title given its decidedly quirky sci-fi appeal.

What to do with Lobby Cards?

I like to stick them on the wall in my room. They make fine mini-posters. Use blue tack or some other substance that will make them stay on the walls without nails.

    Back to the FUTURAMA!!!!

I'm sure that strong DVD sales played a role in this very welcome series revival. It will be a happy day when I can put the newest Futurama volume next to the others in my collection.

The latest news from the Warner DVD Decision 2006 front...

Is it wrong for me to be kind of excited that Gymkata is one of the leaders? Granted, a campy film like Gymkata did not belong among the films it was competing against. There should be a special label for the likes of Gymkata: Warner Cult "Classics", maybe.

Should the Major Studios Just Give Up?

I'm sure that when downloading on demand is available on a widespread level (and I really think this will be coming fairly soon), there will be ways to make it more permanent. Perhaps fans or the studios themselves can offer custom-made extras or disc and box art. Downloading really is the...

Three Jesse James classics from Fox finally released in March of 2007, See Post #24

Don't get too excited, folks. As the film The Assassination of Jesse James has been moved to next year, I imagine these film will be rescheduled as well.

    The Omen - Remake

I'm not sure that I agree that the only reason these movies make money is because of the youth market. Why do these recent youth-oriented remakes consistently make more money than youth-targeted original horror films? Compare the gross for something like the When a Stranger Calls remake to...
