A DVD of Porgy and Bess -- Need of Restoration!

Those clips are abysmal. They are from the cut pan&scan TV print that somebody duplicated. You can also buy the same version on 'that auction site' but the color is completely faded to pink, wrong OAR and mono sound. So avoid it like the plague. What is happening here, I think, is the Gershwin...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory: Volume 2

There are so many great points in this set that it seems churlish to focus on the few flaws, but yes, THE PIRATE is a disappointment in the color department. The Garland Set laserdisc was glorious, this DVD is just acceptable. Why do studios keep getting the color transfer wrong? Somebody isn't...

"Oklahoma" any plans to correct the Todd-AO disc?

Please stop this. The OKLAHOMA Todd-AO disc is a complete disaster from beginning to end. The picture quality is soft and fuzzy AND faded. The sound is a non original mix. Fox know it was a mistake yet won't correct it. The general consensus agree this should have been recalled in the first...

    Check it out - foxclassics.com!

Yes, great news that even more treasures are finally being released from Fox, BUT it's a mixed blessing. Don't forget they have had some spectacular failures recently on really major films. Technicolor classics with really bad color transfers like THE GANG'S ALL HERE, BLOOD & SAND and THE...

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ Can-Can

The 35mm prints were De Luxe. Technicolor was the only company that could process and mass produce 70mm release prints at that time. Later in the 1960's Metrocolor and the dreaded De Luxe took this on as well. Can-Can truly is an oddity. Many of the things that are wrong with it can be traced...

    Joan Collins at Fox?

"Joan Collins: Superstar," a five disc set containing RALLY 'ROUND THE FLAGS, BOY, SEA WIFE, THE GIRL IN THE RED VELVET SWING (with audio commentary. By Collins?), SEVEN THIEVES, and STOPOVER TOKYO. Joan Collins was certainly no 'superstar' in any of those titles. She was a contract player...

A Few Words About A few words about... Fox's "Marquee Musicals"

THAT NIGHT IN RIO is a technicolor masterpiece with fantastic songs. Worth purchasing alone just for the sensational opening sequence that features three songs and lasts about 11 minutes. It should definitely be considered for the next wave along with THE GANGS ALL HERE

Touch of Evil (50th Anniversary Edition) 10-07-08 (See Post# 14)

I can take or leave Mancini's music depending on the film. His score for TOUCH OF EVIL is some of Mancini's finest work and absolutely enhanced the brilliant opening to this film and sets you up for what is to come. A two disc SE MUST feature both versions of this fine film that is one of the...

FOX - The King & I, Carousel, South Pacific

After the shameful DVD presentation of OKLAHOMA recently and the deeply offensive F**K YOU explanation from Fox, I for one, won't be conned into purchasing these titles blind. There is no harm in waiting until they are reviewed on HTF and get decent feedback from the members. Pinky,Island in...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Chicago - Razzle Dazzle 2-disc SE, DAZZLINGLY RECOMMENDED

As a film director Rob Marshall is an adequate stage choreographer. He is neither a genius nor a great director, merely someone who was in the right place at the right time but certainly no match for a Fosse or Strohman. 'Chicago' has a long history on stage in many different incarnations. When...

20th Century Fox: Why the unwatchable Oklahoma Todd AO transfer?

There should also be pressure put on Rodgers & Hammerstein. They must be made aware just how flawed this DVD is and how Fox have compromised the transfer. [email protected] The R&H site is presenting these new transfers as the greatest thing that's happened to these films in recent history...

    Lucy MAME where are you?

....however, in "Fallen Angel" all of my clothes were done by Chanel. She said to me 'Cherie', she always used to call me Cherie, 'clothes not only make the woman, clothes make the world!' Oh, she's brilliant!... sell her own mother; but brilliant!

DVD's Remastered, Ultra Resolution, From Original Source Elements...

Its a very difficult decision to make though. Most of these details that show up with newer technologies were never meant to be seen. Especially in the area of wigs and make-up. These were highly tested areas and their technicians knew just exactly what they could and could not get away with on...

    There's "A Summer Place" . . . But Not on DVD

Count me in too.:) A Delmer Daves Box Set would be a great idea. A SUMMER PLACE, PARRISH, SUSAN SLADE, and ROME ADVENTURE Apart from dealing with ground-breaking issues for their time, these films were beautifully crafted and looked gorgeous as well as big earners for Warner Bros. Some of...

    20th Century Fox DVD requests--2005

THE VISIT This is a fantastic film. Every body I show it to is blown away by the performances of Bergman and Quinn. It looks fantastic in super sharp black and white and CinemaScope. Fox, you really need to wake up to the treasures you have in your vaults. Other gems you could put to DVD are...

No Greg,it's just one persons opinion. There are hordes of bad films and most of them are available on DVD, but this isnt one of them. Of course it isn't that bad, but it does have weak direction. In a more capable directors hands it could have been so much better. There are many people on...

6 classic westerns coming to DVD in region 2 UK

These Optimum releases of 20th Century Fox CinemaScope films " Garden of Evil", "Broken Lance" and "Warlock" arrived today and are excellent in so many ways. The transfers are, again, not as advertised on the packaging from Optimum. Garden of Evil and Broken Lance are in their original...

The Phantom of the Opera (2004) on DVD May 3

When we were making this film the budget figure always quoted was £80 million.A major part of that from Lloyd Webber's own company. Thats about 150 million dollars plus prints and advertising. Good luck trying to recoup that any day soon. Even if everyone who had seen it on stage turned up...

6 classic westerns coming to DVD in region 2 UK

Yes Joe, they were both 2.55 CinemaScope originally but they are being released on these DVDs in 2.35 and Stereo and until they come out later in the month we just have to hope its from a 4 track master. Who knows, maybe their spokesperson got it wrong and they will be in 2.55 as well as 4...

I have been reliably informed today that" Garden of Evil", "Broken Lance" and "Warlock" will be in STEREO but my source couldn't say what type of sound mix. Lets hope it is from 4 track. The other good news is that the aspect ratio for all three will be 2.35:1 anamorphic . They have also...

6 classic westerns coming to DVD in region 2 UK

I'm very excited that Optimum are releasing these great Fox titles. Three of them,Garden of Evil ,Broken Lance and Warlock are superb CinemaScope films from the 1950's that are rarely seen. Optimum have come in for some criticism of the quality of some of their classic titles so I decided to...

6 great fox westerns - only in England !!

'Valley of the Dolls' wasn't licensed out in the UK. It was released as a double bill with 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' by Fox Home Entertainment. Unfortunately the print of 'Valley of the Dolls' is dull and flat with loads of dirt, speckles etc whilst 'Beyond' is very good.

6 great fox westerns - only in England !!

Yes, John. Hopefully the rest of the UK will see the release of these great titles too.;) However, Optimum Releasing have a strictly average record with the quality of their product. It would be a great shame to release them not in their OAR or in decent stereo mixes considering 4 of those...
