    Underworld Evolution

I missed Evolution in the theaters but got an advanced DVD copy with the DD 5.1 track. Picture and sound are amazing on this DVD! Definitely a reference DVD. Where are all the reviews? I haven't gotten through the whole movie, just watched bits and pieces. I'm waiting for friends to get...

FS: BIC Acoustech Speakers (Wash DC, MD, No VA area)

Hi Wayne, can you post a review about these speakers and explain why you're selling them? I'm just curious.

    Lord of the Rings Revisited

I have the same feeling about the two mixes: they sound so different that I can't decide which one to use for the marathon. Maybe do the marathon one day in DTS and then the next day in DD :D But I do find the bass to be tighter and cleaner on the DD tracks...

    Lord of the Rings Revisited

I have been wanting to do the LotR EE marathon with friends for a long time, but haven't been able to find the time that is convenient for everyone. Quick question though: do you do the marathon in DTS or DD EX? I am debating this, since I find the DD EX mixes have cleaner and tighter bass.

    ventriloquist

They are excellent for the price! And that's the key: "for the price". They sound like larger speakers due to the patented Ventriloquist effect. And when they are mated with a good clean subwoofer (like an HSU STF-2 or STF-3), the combination sounds like a very "full" speaker system. Of course...

Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread

Yes Gary_A, the player does have incremental zoom, both horizontal and vertical. It's rather quite neat, and great for making non-anamorphic video anamorphic.

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Oh man... it's not an issue of having massive bass, and I wish more members on this thread would understand that that's not what we want. We just want consistent usage of bass, and realistic usage of bass. If in one scene a ship crash lands and generates LFE, then should it not do the same in...

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Count me in! Also, we should include as part of that campaign a fix for the missing EX flag!

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Most of us are on the Home Theater Forum because we are audio/video-philes. Either that, or we became audio/video-philes in our quest for the best audio/video equipment. And yes, 99 percent of the public is likely not on this forum and likely didn't notice the missing EX flag, or the loss of...

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Interesting. I wish they would also explain the "Mystery of the missing EX flag". I guess that error will also only plague the first batch of DVDs... I should've waited for a revision of this DVD!

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Very well put! Shaun, I couldn't agree with you more! All the places I was half expecting bass, I got nothing. And the places I wasn't expecting bass (Anakin pulls out saber to kill younglings), I got too much. Weird, and definitely inconsistent. And for Shane Dodson that keeps saying we seem...

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Are we sure there wasn't an error made while mixing the 5.1 track for this DVD? Perhaps they forgot the .1 channel? terence has already listed a lot of scenes in which I expected some sort of bass but got almost nothing. I got up twice to make sure the connection to my VTF-3 MK2 wasn't the...

    BATMAN (1989) & sequels (STREET DATE: Oct. 18, 2005)

After watching all 4 this past weekend, I must say that I was most entertained by Forever. Kilmer's performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman was very good and I loved Carrey as the Riddler. "Batman, Batman you say!" :D As for Batman & Robin: what an atrocity!

    Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread

Has anyone compared the Samsung 850 upconversion over component to the Zenith DVB318 upconversion over component? I currently have the Zenith (LG version) and might wanna upgrade to the Sammy if it is in fact an upgrade. Thanks

    X-Box DVD player in HD

Thanks for the info Dean! :) I will try that tonight and see if it works for me and I'll compare the quality to that of my LG DV7832 1080i player.

Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread

Wow, I've never ever seen that sort of banding either using an LG DV7832 on a Toshiba 50H82 RPTV. I've also checked with my copy of Ice Age and no such banding appears.

    Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread

I've compared 720p vs. 1080i using the same source on my Toshiba 50H82 rear projection CRT set and 1080i has always looked better: XBox games and LG DV7832. However, on a friend's Panasonic projector, 720p looks better because it maps 1:1 to the LCD projector's native resolution.

    Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread

Yes, plenty of sets do, even older Toshiba and Hitachi rear projection CRT sets. However, very few RP CRT sets actually display 720p natively, they convert 720p internally and display it as 1080i.

    Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread

1080i is 1920x1080 interlaced. 720p is 1280x720 progressive. Although progressive scan signals are known to result in a better picture quality than an interlaced signal, the comparison is only truly valid when comparing an interlaced signal of a certain resolution to a progressive signal of the...

    Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread

RichardCoh et al, 720p is not always the best and not always definitively better than 1080i. They are both HD signals, 1080i is an interlaced signal (not "integrated") with a higher resolution than 720p, but 720p is a progressive signal. Which one is better is highly dependent on the source...

    Shark Tale - Reference Quality!

I agree with Mike Williams... I mean, I hate forced trailers too but let's not exaggerate folks! They can easily be fast forwarded, and if your DVD player doesn't do 100x, then maybe it's time you got a new player. At 100x fast forward, the forced trailers are done with in a matter of seconds.

    X-Box DVD player in HD

a couple of misconceptions about modded xbox on this thread: 1) Many modchips can easily be disabled to allow online Live play 2) XBox Media Center does in fact upconvert to 1080i but unfortunately none of the standard XBox DVD-ROM drives are supported by XBox Media Center for DVD movie...

    X-Box DVD player in HD

Maybe I'm not in the know with recent XBox product releases, but as far as I do know there's no such thing as an HD "upconvert" cable pack for the XBox. There is in fact only an XBox HD cable pack, which allows you to play HD games (720p, 1080i) over component cables to an HD-compatible display...
