    Local shop vs. internet purchases

I would love to support the local mom and pop stores, but since I live more than 12 miles from the nearest horse and buggie town I have to do most of shopping online. We live about 1-1.5 hrs from the nearest hifi buys, Circuit City, Best buy, Etc. I would end up spending more on gas than...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

That sounds good, I was actually going to buy them at pre order price but didn't have the $$ at the time. If I can still get them at $549 for the 5 speakers and you throw a black SVS hat in for free (i'm a hat freak) I may be convinced to try the SBS-01 first, LOL. I like the pen I got from the...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

Thanks for the reply Ron. The SBS-01 is still in the running for me. Mainly what I am looking for is good deep dialog, thats why I figured the 6.5" woofer was better for me than the 5.25". I like to use a little demo disk I have that has James Earl Jones narrating. I love the way his voice...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

That makes sense. I guess the lack of bass would cause the highs to be more pronounced, which would make it sound more high pitched. Thanks for the help.

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

So basically it would be safe to say that if I was in the $500-$600 get the SVS sbs-01, and if i'm willing to pay more, get the Ascend 170,340 setup? Thats kind of what I was starting to think. I guess the reason I was thinking the 6.5" woofers would be more my taste is because so far all the...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

The ones I had were the Rti4 L/R, the Csi3 center, adn RM101 surrounds. After reading several comparisons and reviews on both, I am starting to lean towards the Ascend 170se's for the fronts and the 340se for the Center and keeping my bipole sony surrounds. I am thinking the 6.5" woofers will...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

Seth: Ok maybe I exagerated a little bit, LOL. After reading a few threads I think the 340se would be overkill for my situation. The 170se L/C/R and surrounds would be acually be about $200 more than the SBS-01 5.1 system. but I'm willing to spend that much if they are worth the extra $$$. Thats...

    SVS sbs-01 Vs. Ascend 170se or 340se

What is everyones opinion on Ascend Speakers? I have read numurous reviews on the SVS SBS-01 speakers and everyone say they are the best thing since sliced bread. I own a SVS PB10 and I know the same quality has to be in the SBS-01 speakers. After checking out the SPL graphs on the Ascend...

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

I went back to hifi buys today and talked to the salesman about the situation. Come to find out that the fronts aren't the problem, it's the center. I compared the Csi3 to the Csi5 and could not believe the difference in sound. There is a big difference between 5.25" and 6.5" The Csi5 has the...

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

Well after a week of testing the Polk setup, I am stumped. I can't make my mind up wether I like the sound or not. The Polk speakers are very clear and crisp, but it's missing the one thing I can't put my finger on. I think it's just that I can't get used to the brightness of the speakers. It's...

Center Channel Speaker Shelf for TV

Looks great, did you make it out of MDF? MDF works perfect for projects like that because you can paint/stain it any color you want and it is extremely router freindly.

Center Channel Speaker Shelf for TV

I don't think you will have any issues as long as the center channel is shielded, which I'm pretty sure 99% of them are. I had mine mounted directly on my projection TV with some Velcro and never had any issues with it.

    Sub materials and such

I agree, MDF with a veneer. I do a lot of car installs and box building and I would think they would be similar. The one main thing to remember is that when you calculate the box demensions don't forget to allow for the internal volume that the speaker will take up. Like John said, sealed...

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

Ron, I felt the same way about the JBL's, sounded like they were muffled. I ended up with Polks RTi4 fronts, CSi3 center, and RM101 surrounds. The only thing I have noticed about the Polks is it sounds like they may be lacking in some midrange frequencies. It may be because I went from towers to...

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I ended up auditioning a Polk setup this weekend. I ended up getting a RTi4 for the fronts, CSi3 for the center, and a set of RM101 for the surrounds. This set sounds great in the house and the small surrounds satisfy WAF. Luckly I get to try them out for 30...

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

Thanks for the reply Douglas. I usually listen to movies around -5 to -7 from reference level on my reciever. I originaly planned on getting the SBS-01 package, but I hated to just jump them without researching other options first.

SVS, JBL, or Polk speaker upgrades.

I need help deciding which speaker upgrades to go with. I currently have some 8yr old Sony speakers and a SVS PB-10. I want to upgrade the L/C/R/S speakers to go along with the SVS sub. Here is what I have come up with in my $600-700 range which is which is pretty firm. SVS SBS-01 5...

Klipsch, Velodyne, or SVS sub help

Ya I was looking at the SVS PB-10, but I didn't notice that it didn't have a crossover. That really shouldn't matter because I can set the crossover on my Onkyo to 80-100hz for the mains and have everything below that sent to the sub right? So the SVS PB-10 should perform equal or probably...

Klipsch, Velodyne, or SVS sub help

First off, thanks for the responses. After reading everyones response, you've got me thinking, maybe I am looking at my choices the wrong way. A few things that I should have stated earlier. My room size is 12x18, and we can't listen to the HT very loud, so loudness is not a factor, and my...

Klipsch, Velodyne, or SVS sub help

Well it's hard to beleive, but my Infinity BU-120 sub went kaput on me, LMAO. It's time to get another sub, but i'm in a decision rut and I need some help. I have narrowed my choices down to three subs based on price and frequency response. My three choices are the Velodyne DPS-12 which is $499...

Should be easy qyestions for you guys

Larry*McP, I would recommend getting a Onkyo tx-sr501 or tx-sr601 receiver. This is my opinion, but for the money they are well worth it.

Why is my HDTV output so "selective"?

I'm not sure, but doesn't a HD signal and progressive scan signals be fed through the either DVI or R/G/B component video? I didn't think you could use regular RCA or S-video connections.

Should be easy qyestions for you guys

Larry I will try to make this sound simple. If it only has an Optical and 2 RCA outputs then it more than likely doesn't have a Dolby Digital decoder built in. You can only get DD/DTS 5.1 from 2 ways. 1. Digital Optical or Digital Coax cable From a DD/DTS compatible DVD player to a DD/DTS...

    Bridging head unit amp?

I have never seen a HU with bridging capabilities. If you are wanting more power, you would be better off getting an external amp. An external amp is going to give you a lot better sound and clarity.

    DVD-R's...the best?

I have always had better luck with dvd+r than -r. As for brands, "DON'T buy cheap disk" the bundle packs of 25+ for $20-$30 etc. (for brands like Sony, Memorex, Maxell, Imation, to name a few) are cheap disk and will usually have 25% succees rate. Media companies (IE: memorex, maxell...

    Best Surround sound reciever?

For Movies I would pick the Onkyo TXSR701 (same as the TXSR700, but THX Certified) For Music I would choose the H/K AVR325. I have no response on Sony receivers anymore, I have had to many problems with all the ones I've had in the past. I have not had the chance to audition any of the...
