I just picked up a denon 3801 (with a 3803 remote) in pristine condition for 350 + 25 shipping off Audiogon (I posted a wanted ad). Maybe more features on a current model, but certainly not more bang for the buck. I'm extraordinarily pleased with the 3801.

Thanks for the follow-up, John. I disconnected everything and started over one component at a time; the constant seems to be the front speakers. I'm going to borrow another set of fronts and run the system with them; then I'll try the old epi speakers one at a time. After hooking the epi's up...

Wayne, Thank you--sounds like the big difference with PL2 is decoding older movies; this would be useful. Thought the 3801 at 350 was a killer deal; seems like this technology is moving at lightning speed.

My budget, unfortunately, is right at the $350 level at this time. Is Dolby PL2 such a dramatic improvement? What will I gain from it, exactly? I really don't know; I was blown away hearing PL several years ago. I'm mainly interested in what I'm going to get out of newer movie releases at this...
